West Plains, MO
Next month I will be making a little road trip out to West Plains MO, from Springfield, or parts thereabout.
Is there anything to see on the way? I know there ain't much out there yonder, but figured I'd ask. https://i.imgur.com/qaNucFL.png This place looks like some GOOD EATIN! https://ozarkcafewestplains.com/ In related news, I had no idea we had a China, MO. |
Staying at the Quality Inn are ya?
|
May god have mercy on your soul….
|
I bet I can pick up some fresh preserves on the way.
|
Always sunny and 72° in Olathia.
|
I bet there is literally NOTHING worth seeing on that drive.
|
Lots of white people and confederate flags.
|
That’s my neck of the woods
Yeah….there’s not a lot there |
Don't stop in West Plains. Keep on truckin' down to Mammoth Springs and stop at the Riverbend restaurant for some homemade coconut cream pie.
|
Getting down there towards the deliverance type of places
Be careful |

The Harlin Museum looks like a quaint collection of old people's living rooms.

Took that route from Springfield heading to Alabama quite a few years ago. Recall it being somewhat of a pretty drive. There was a stretch of highway right next to train tracks. I ended up driving next to a long ass train for what seemed like forever. Made for a cool experience.
|
Looks solid to me, and prices are nice
|
I spent off and on about 6 months in West Plains doing preliminary work for the realignment of 63 highway from Willow Springs south to just past West Plains. It's not real scenic in WP but it doesn't take much driving to get to the beautiful country. This was near 30 years ago its added some restaurants and hotels since we were there.
It's Porter Wagoner's hometown lol. A barbershop in town used to have a bluegrass hoedown Wednesday nights country folk would come from smiled to play. But you can find that in a lot of towns in Missouri. You can think me for the smooth nice easy drive from willow springs to West plains. Oh you may see an Amish carriage trotting down the shoulder along 60 hywy early in the morning he'll give ya a wave. Thats about it honestly its a pleasant town just not really touristy. |
Had a restaurant just out past the Super 8 in West Plains Carlotta's Country Kitchen was excellent Breakfast and Lunch don't see it on map so probably gone now. El Charro's Mexican Restaurant is still there I see nothing special but won't kill ya.
|
Well I'll be damn looked at the Ozark Cafe and that's the same building that Carlotta's Country Kitchen was in. We ate breakfast and lunch there often. We noticed it because the highway Patrol would eat there all the time. Thats always a good sign.

You going down there to smash Luv?

Each stretch of pavement should have it's own roadkill point chart. Kansas adds flavor to the point total.

North Fork of the White River not far. A little floating and fishing. Jacks Fork a bit farther but not unreasonable for afloat. It's got some fun rapids from Eminence on downstream.

You most likely won't see a lot of folks wearing masks.
|
That's a pretty full day to drive down there and back in one day. Get an early start. Learn some useful colorful local phrases to communicate, things like: 1) STOP THE COUNT! 2) IT WAS RIGGED 3) Shove that mask up your ass 4) Weeeeeel Doggies, and 5) Well Shit Little Putty Balls!
Actually, Southwest Missouri down around Springfield has Covid Spread bad right now, so do take and wear a mask in public places. Only about 30% of the population down in those parts have gotten that liberal micro chip vaccination so far. Have fun. My great uncle Bud owned a Skelly Station in Rogersville in the 1960s. He was a gas pumpin, engine building mofo! |
I think you're going to be disappointed if you are looking for an Ozark hill country experience. West Plains there is a reason for that bolded part in the Towns name. The town itself is well known for white trash welfare squatters. You don't have to bad a drive into hills though. These are fairly flat rolling hills for cattle grazing the flatter ground. It's like a little island of a flatter country surrounded by Ozarks to the south. There is a welfare processing center in town that attracts folks looking for an easy time.

Do they still have cockfights around White Church Peace Valley area? TJ’s had a bad reputation for the staff being methheads. Don’t how many are still alive. Porter Wagoner was a bagger at Ramey’s a grocery store. On his breaks he would play his guitar and sing. The crowds would get so big on Saturday mornings with people waiting for him to sing the manager quit letting him sing in the front of the store. The manager moved him to a corner in the back of the store.
Quality Inn owned by India people, big security system, if you take anything and they call you to bring it back. Just bring it back and return it. Offer to call police yourself that will shut them up real quick. Beware of the hospital, most of the doctors are from India, getting their hours in so they can transfer to larger hospitals and more pay. The doctors are basically practicing their surgery skills till they get to real hospitals. |

You'll likely see some Amish folk around the Seymour/Mansfield area. If you happen to stop around there keep your distance, they smell like ass.
There is actually a really good French Restaurant in Fordland called La Galette Berrichonne, not sure why they chose that area to open it but it has great food. Completely out of place though. |

West Plains Vet Supply Great place for livestock and farm supplies
|
There was a restaurant in the 90s that had a girl pose in hustler. Other than that haven't been there except for memorial day.
|
great catfish joint in Thayer
|
That's a place I try and get through as fast as I can on the way to Florida. I can't think of a thing. Maybe a liquor store after coming back driving through Arkansas. It's the Home of the Zizzer's. I played a high school golf match there back in the 70's. I played with Stan Utley and he shot 74 while I shot 76. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stan_Utley
We took a yellow school bus to play and one kid from another team threw a milk carton out the window at a car. What a jerk! He got in trouble. |

West Plains is also known for some of the worst puppy mills in the USA.

Terrible. I make a point to only vacation in places that have three star or higher rated puppy mills. |
Stay away from puppy mills and visit Hodgson or Dawt mills instead. Pro tip
