Dak Wants Cowboys To Pay Him ‘Right Behind Mahomes’ - And Pay Him ‘Respect’

https://www.si.com/nfl/cowboys/news/...respect-report

The Dallas Cowboys believe their two-years-worth of contract offers to Dak Prescott have been all about “respect.”

Dak’s side now wants something more: “Respect” in the form of a new proposal that would put his salary “right behind” that of two-time Super Bowl QB Patrick Mahomes.

Prescott is “looking to be paid right behind Patrick Mahomes, a guy who’s gone to the Super Bowl two years in a row,” NFL Network’s Jane Slater said on the Dan Patrick Show.

Sassy Squatch 03-01-2021 08:52 PM

This is going to be one of the more entertaining shit shows this offseason.

The thing is you can't trade him because he's not under contract like Watkins and Wilson. He ain't worth anywhere near 35+ million yet this fool wants 40+? **** that. Dallas is better off cutting bait and beginning from zero. That team is in as bad a mess as the Eagles.

In58men 03-01-2021 09:25 PM

Of course he would say this, he wants to get the most money he can.

Do you think he’s going to say “pay me close to what Geno Smith makes”

big nasty kcnut 03-01-2021 09:50 PM

Bitch please. You're not in mahomes league.

Marco Polo 03-01-2021 09:52 PM

Dallas somehow needs to do a sign and trade with Seattle involving Wilson/Dak. It'd be a win-win for players/franchise.

Sassy Squatch 03-01-2021 09:59 PM

The funny thing is unless Dallas gives him pretty damn close to what he's demanding he's just going to play out this last year on the tag and then hit the open market like Cousins did. Who knows what insane price he'll fetch then.

wazu 03-01-2021 09:59 PM

He’ll probably get it. It’s crazy but that’s the QB market.

chinaski 03-01-2021 09:59 PM

This is ****ing ridiculous. Win a Superbowl, get paid, if not shut the **** up.

Kman34 03-01-2021 10:00 PM

Dak is overrated as a QB.. And Jerry is not even on the scale as a Owner/GM... Neither side is going to cave in... Thank god we have the Owner, GM, coach, and QB we have here.. The Cowboys are a shitshow...

Sassy Squatch 03-01-2021 10:01 PM

LMAO Holy shit the Cowboys cap is a disaster. They'd have to clear 20 million just to place the tag on him and that's still right up against it.

Cowboys are like the WFT: neither will win under their current ownership.

OKchiefs 03-01-2021 10:12 PM

Best possible scenario for the Chiefs is all of these lesser QBs getting contracts in the ballpark and eventually exceeding that of Mahomes. Teams paying lesser QBs the same money for inferior results is a win for us.

dlphg9 03-01-2021 10:18 PM

Wonder what "right behind"' means?

$1 million/yr less?
$5 million/yr less?

Pat is at $45 mil/yr

and

Deshaun is at $39 mil/yr

I know that everyone is supposed to hate Dak and love Deshaun, but with how contracts are now Dak is probably gonna get $40 mil/year and he can justify getting more than Deshaun.

Frankly I don't think either are worth it, but Dak should get more than him because the next guy up always gets more than the guy that got paid before him. Both of them have 1 playoff win and if you look at QBR Dak has been better.

Dak P. QBR

16'- 77.6
17'- 69.9
18'- 55.2
19'- 71.9
20'- 78.7

And D Watson QBR

17'- 83.5
18'- 61.8
19'- 70.5
20'- 70.5

The wording of this makes it sound kinda dumb, but at least he's not saying he wants Mahomes money. He just wants to be the next highest paid QB and he will 100% get it.

Deberg_1990 03-01-2021 10:35 PM

Respect? He was already very well paid this year wasn’t he?

He will get paid a lot of money by someone. The QB market is insane for just a decent/competent talent right now.

Baby Lee 03-01-2021 10:36 PM

JohnnyV13 03-02-2021 12:01 AM

I totally agree that paying Dak "right behind Mahomes" is the perfect way to show him the respect he is due, just as long as this takes place right before Patrick takes a dump.

comochiefsfan 03-02-2021 12:02 AM

He's a good quarterback, but his value of himself is laughable.

cdcox 03-02-2021 12:40 AM

Mahomes’ contract has set the NFL on fire. Dak wants out of Dallas. Wilson wants out of Seattle. Watson wants out of Houston. Franchise QBs used to never leave the team where they made their bones until late in the twilight of their careers. Now we have 3 top 10 QBs that are disgruntled in the prime years of their careers.

An astute and accurate analysis, Mr. cdcox. We may well be observing the Mahomes Effect first-hand.

Or ...

Dak, Watson, and Wilson are actually Skrulls.

It's either one or the other, for sure.

If he plays out the last year on the tag and hits the open market he could probably get more than Mahomes APY.

Mile High Mania 03-02-2021 08:39 AM

Well, right or wrong... this is what happens with QBs. The new big contract sets the bar and raises the bar for those a level or two down. Wentz averages 32M and Tannehill averages 29M... shit is crazy.

Hell, I recall when Elway set the bar with a 5m overall contract or something to that effect... it's a good gig if you can get it.

Dak’s emotions have pulled a chair up to the negotiation table.

Respect is earned and paid in a different kind of currency altogether. It can’t simply be monetized.

Situations like this remind me how young these players are.

Doesn't really have anything to do with youth. It's the society we are in, plain and simple. Look at JJ Watt chasing the money to a team that won't win anything, when he's one of the most "respected competitors" in all of Football, nearing the end of his career, and saying all the right things.

Even if it's not the Cowboys he is going to get $40 mil/yr from somebody. Supposedly he had a 5 yr $175 mil which comes in at $35 mil/yr. I definitely wouldn't call him an idiot for turning the deal down, because he made just under $31.5 mil for 4 games of work and this coming up year if he's franchises (he will be), then he's guaranteed to make $37.7 mil in 2021. That's $69.2 million for 2 years.

The reports about his most recent offer were saying that in the first 2 years of the contract he'd get $70 mil. So by playing under the franchise tag he basically gets the Cowboys offer, but he isn't tied to them long term. If Cowboys want to franchise him again after 2021, then he's going to make $54.3 mil in 2022.

Barring a catastrophic injury one of these 3 things is going to happen

1. Cowboys sign him to a 4 yr/$160 million deal
2. Cowboys franchise him in 2022 and it's like he signed a 3 yr $120+ mil deal that was fully guaranteed because of the franchise tag.
3. Cowboys let him walk after this coming season and he's a 29 year old FA QB in a year that the salary cap takes a massive jump and who knows, by then the Ravens might to stupid enough to give him a contract that pays him more per year than Mahomes and Dak signs for $50 mil/yr with some stupid ass team like the Raiders.

I wouldn't really call that being a complete idiot.

I love this whole situation for the Cowgirls.. I want to grab a bucket of popcorn and watch this trainwreck. Its a win win for me.. If Dallas signs him to a huge contract they will continue to be irrelevent for years. And if they don't sign him they will also be irrelevent.

KermitUnderCenter 03-03-2021 10:27 AM

Sure you can say he’s smart for making a ton of money taking the Kirk Cousins method on the franchise tag. IMO any team that pays him “respect money” will end up going nowhere.

He’s been carried by a top defense and run game since entering the league, and hasn’t proven he can carry the load by himself. Only a handful of guys in the league are worth this pay range, and I don’t think Dak is one of them.

Gravedigger 03-03-2021 10:48 AM
