Thumbs Up / Thumbs Down issue
 

I know a while back, the mods put some space between the Like button and the dislike button to help prevent accidental down votes.

The issue is still happening to a lot of people and then I noticed tonight why.

Even though there's space between them now, the space is actually occupied by the thumbs down button. To click on the thumbs up, you have to be directly on the icon.

But to click on the thumbs down, you can literally click on the icon or a full icon's width to the left. If you miss the thumbs up just by a smidge to the right and click on the right space, it produces a thumbs down.

That's part of the problem. It's also a problem that most CPers have really fat fingers. It's difficult to touch a glass (phone) surface at all without touching damn near all of it.

I actually did it tonight on my PC with a mouse, that's how I noticed the issue.

Well that explains why so many of my brilliant posts get thumbsed down!

DaFace spread them apart due to user complaints, and yet accidental downvotes seemingly got even worse... just pay attention to what you're doing folks, its easy if you try

On a phone, it's really not that easy to keep from doing it. The down vote button is actually 3 times the size of the upvote button.

I think what happened is people saw all that wide open space and they relaxed. Just mashed those oversized sausage fingers down on their screens and figured it'd be alright. It wasn't.

Not sure how to explain whats going on with your phone, I've spent a lot of time here on my phone and never seen that

Not trying to brag about something not worth bragging about, but I've honestly never missed a vote on my phone or laptop

If its the phone I zoom in a lil first to be sure, on the big screen I just put the arrow where its supposed to go... I've been quietly laughing to myself about this little phenomenon for a while now

My biggest problem is that it’s exactly where I scroll down on my phone with my thumb 90% of the time.

the irony. after my viewing this thread and replying, i realized i have conditioned myself to my mouse cursor always being in line with the thumbs up

Those screenshots are from my PC browser. I can reproduce the issue on my phone. There is something wrong with the icon and/or hyperlink. It's definitely server-side.

And while I realize ideally people would click exactly where you want them, it's really not that hard to mess up when one "hot zone" is 3 times the size of the other one.

It would be nice if we could have an option to change it if we accidentally hit the wrong one. But once thumbed up (or down), there is no going back. I know my fat fingers have hit the wrong one on several occasions. Is that something that would be possible?

In short, not really. It's a super basic hack that doesn't have "undo" built in. So unless someone wants to try and develop it, it kind of is what it is.

I mainly just try to encourage people not to take it too seriously.

How come sometimes I see the thumbs up\thumbs down and other times I don't? It happens on multiple PC's, and I don't CP on my phone.

It seems to be missing randomly...
