Who is your breakout player for this season?

In the spirit of football being a month away (with early projected camp dates), now seems like a good time to talk football with everything else going on.

So who is your guy to break out for our Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs?

stumppy 06-09-2020 09:27 AM

CEH

Shoes 06-09-2020 09:29 AM

Tanoh Kpassagnon- molded into a reliable player as part of a rotation this last year, I think he'll get a bump up in playing time and have a nice year for the Chiefs.

kcclone 06-09-2020 09:36 AM

Mecole Hardman taking a big step would be great. Hopefully Fenton becomes a reliable 3rd/4th CB.

staylor26 06-09-2020 09:37 AM

Hardman

O.city 06-09-2020 09:43 AM

I could see Hardman, my only problem with that is that there's just not that many damn touches available.

Hill and Kelce will get theirs. Then you've got Sammy on a contract year, CEH, etc.

Only so many to go around.

RunKC 06-09-2020 09:44 AM

Willie Gay was my #1 thought since he’ll be an instant starter who will likely play more snaps than CEH, but I’ll go with an under the radar pick.

Taco Charlton

He’s a legit 1st rd talent with measurables/athleticism. He put up 5 sacks in a good defense last year while playing part time. Based on what this staff did with Ogbah last year, I could see this guy putting up 7 or 8 sacks

O.city 06-09-2020 09:47 AM

I think Nnadi could start really getting some love as well. He's developed nicely.

Dunerdr 06-09-2020 09:50 AM

MECOLE HARDMAN (in my best LEROY JENKINS impression)

BossChief 06-09-2020 09:50 AM

Ward. I think his eye surgery will help him bridge the gap from knockdowns to a few picks that make the difference in games.

My second choice would be Saunders.

I think I'll agree with this.

Hydrae 06-09-2020 10:09 AM

I don't know about "breakout" because I am not sure what that would look like on the o-line but I am looking forward to seeing what we really have with Rankin. If he can solidify the LG position, that would do so much to improve that line.

Yet he still had 538 yards and 6 TD’s last year. He clearly doesn’t need a lot of targets to be productive.

If the offense is firing on all cylinders like 2018...

kcclone 06-09-2020 10:39 AM

My breakout bucket would be:

K-pass
Ward
Fenton
Speaks
Saunders
Taco
Armani Watts

Any breakout players we get from that bunch would be huge, since we basically return our entire Super Bowl roster

I just don't think he'll really have a statistical breakout season with the offense as constructed in that there's just so many mouths to feed.

Being productive is one thing, being a "breakout" player is another. Unless Watkins inevitably gets hurt though.

I hope both of these guys, if it happens this defense would be improved over last year

Buckweath 06-09-2020 12:32 PM

Juan Thornhill is definitly a good candidate too if he is healed from his injury.

Hardman would be my pick on offense. Not sure if a rookie like CEH fits the definition of a breakout player.

Thornhill on defense. Same comment for Willie Gay.

O.city 06-09-2020 12:37 PM

Rookies will be really behind the 8 ball this year with no offseason stuff. I doubt we get much from them.

lewdog 06-09-2020 12:41 PM

Thornhill. I think he’s gonna be a stud.

mililo4cpa 06-09-2020 12:41 PM

It's crazy to think about really....so many options for a team coming off a Super Bowl win

-CEH
-Hardman
-Gay
-Nnadi
-Saunders
-Thornhill
-Ward
-Charlton

And that's off the top of my head....

Kiimo 06-09-2020 12:42 PM

I'm on the Mecole Hardman train too.

His workout videos show so much effort in route training. He's put on a lot of muscle too.

Honestly the best option would be if it was Gay.

That would help the Chiefs so much.

Rain Man 06-09-2020 12:57 PM

If you look at the pro bowl roster for the interior defensive line last year, it was ...

Chris Jones (age 25)
Cam Heyward (age 31)
Jurrell Casey (age 30)
Geno Atkins (age 32)

I think it's clear that Casey is descending since the Titans let him walk, and Atkins is going to drop off at some point. Who's the competition for Nnadi to get a pro bowl next year? I think he played great last year.

SAGA45 06-09-2020 01:28 PM

ChiefBlueCFC 06-09-2020 01:29 PM

If we are going off of who was already on the team: Hardman.

If we are talking bout rookies: CEH

Sammy Watkins is due for a completely injury-free season.

I think he puts up monster numbers this year hoping to stay a Chief.

These two plus Thornhill are my top three candidates for actually having breakout seasons. Gay having a breakout season is less likely, simply because he's more of a question mark and there's a learning curve to spags system. However I think Gay would have the most impact on the team due to how bad our LB's are.

MeaTy The Pimp 06-09-2020 02:31 PM

Thornhill.

He was getting better and better, until his injury ended his season. I think he will come back with a vengeance.

RealSNR 06-09-2020 02:52 PM

Khalen Saunders.

I think he's going to elevate his play such that the Chiefs will have a top three interior DL unit in the NFL. Spags loves to rotate linemen, but he's going to have to really get creative to find ways to get Saunders on the field more than he did last year.

We did a brief experiment with Jones at DE in short yardage situations, and I think we're really going to use that a lot more often. We're not exactly stellar at that DE spot opposite Clark anyway, and running that creates a lot of unpredictable stunts and shifts that we tried to use earlier in the season last year.

Plus, when Jones needs a breather, it's really going to wear on opposing OLs if the rotation guy is almost as disruptive and is now coming into the game fresh.

Nah, give him one more year to prove himself in the new system... but I’m going with Run KC’s pick of Taco, Frank Clark will keep him motivated and playing the best ball of his career

Hog's Gone Fishin 06-09-2020 03:48 PM

Wut about our new punter? He could be awesome.

Why? He's cheap and I want to see if he can be something. At least give him a shot at the position he actually plays.

Me-cole

RustShack 06-09-2020 04:55 PM

Speaks or Taco.

Niang if he gets a starting job at guard.

Gay and CEH are pretty strong candidates too.

It’s wild that we won the Super Bowl and should have a better team(talent wise, and second year in the defense will be huge).

This is a really good darkhorse.

He was one of the names that came to mind for me also.

Wait, you don’t think we get much from CEH and Gay?

The rest of them sure, but one guy is a RB and Spags has already said he expects Gay to start more than once.

bringbackmarty 06-09-2020 06:25 PM

Clyde Frog for sure. Niang and bopete.

TwistedChief 06-09-2020 06:57 PM

Speaks because the expectations are so low?

CEH is gonna be exactly what we expect. I think Watkins will surprise in being more consistent. Hardman will be a touch less 'big play' but more of a regular presence. Charlton will be a comparable version of Ogbah. Gay will give us the semi-competent athletic LBer we've been dreaming of for this defense.

big nasty kcnut 06-09-2020 07:00 PM

Bryon Pringle he got game changer written all over him.

I put money on both of them for rookies of the year. Gay pays more so hopefully him if not both.
