Ward joins in calling out Bob Sutton

First, let me just say that the Star is putting out much, much better content this year with their new team.

Anyway,
https://www.kansascity.com/sports/sp...238089644.html

Quote:

Ward is talking about a third-and-10 in overtime, when Patriots receiver Julian Edelman split wide to the right, then motioned toward slot receiver Phillip Dorsett at the snap. Ward followed Edelman, the snap timed so that Dorsett rubbed Ward and gave Edelman an extra step.

Tom Brady’s pass, of course, was completed. First down. Three plays later, another conversion. Three plays after that, the touchdown that ended the Chiefs’ season.

"I knew that was coming,” Ward says. “But I couldn’t do nothing about it.”

Ward means he could not stop it because of how he and his teammates were coached. The Patriots had run the exact same play on a third down earlier in the drive, on the other side of the field: Edelman split wide left, motioning toward Dorsett in the slot, his route aided by a rub, the pass completed for a first down.

"So I knew it was coming,” Ward continues. “I couldn’t do nothing about it because I was told to stay down. If I would’ve been like, ‘Nah, nah, nah, let’s in-and-out,’ it would’ve played out different. (If they) kick a field goal, miss or make it, Pat Mahomes goes down and scores a touchdown and we win the game and we’re in the Super Bowl.

“I was instructed to stay down, but I could’ve told (fellow cornerback Kendall) Fuller, ‘Man, let’s in-and-out.’ Because the same thing just happened on the other side.”

Ward pauses. Bob Sutton, then the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator, had been clear in his directives on the Patriots’ fateful drive. Players lose jobs for freelancing.

“But I’m the one that’s playing,” Ward says. “I still could’ve overruled that, and told Fuller, ‘Let’s work together.’”

Another pause.

“Bob was ... man.”

One more pause.

“I ain’t going to say nothing about that.”

If you make a play no coach is going be upset with that do what ever it takes to win.

We can’t assume Bob was a coach. Roach maybe, but definitely not a coach.

Flashbacks to Ditka chewing Harbaugh's ass on national TV in 1987 every time he threw a TD instead of handing off.

Sutton was in over his head when his pass rush disappeared. He had no answers.

Tribal Warfare 12-08-2019 06:57 AM

Not surprising

He still had a pass rush last year. He was in over his head when he couldn't count on Berry and DJ to bail him out on the back end of the defense.

PHOG 12-08-2019 07:44 AM

Bob who?

FringeNC 12-08-2019 08:11 AM

Sutton should have been fired two years earlier.

....and there it is.

Wow really Sutton you’re trash. Finally we get to see the real Ward this year and he looks damn good!

If he wasn't a rookie fighting for playing time, yeah. But he was in no position to go against Sutton. What if he had played it the way he wanted and it was completed anyway? I have no doubt that Marcus Peters in that situation would have ignored Sutton. But I don't think that we want anyone behaving like Peters.

The old man should of been fired after the debacle in Indy....2013...blowing a 28 point lead.

wazu 12-08-2019 09:35 AM

Wow. Gives me hope. I’m also glad he checked himself and didn’t go farther. It’s not necessary and ultimately reflects on Andy.

He didnt go against him. Sutton was a boob to set in his ways Ward was a good soldier and played Suttons scheme no matter how wrong.

We will never know what could have been if he had gone rogue. I will say Wards int sealed the game in Suttons defense if not for dumbass Ford. I just don't like players blaming ex coaches right or wrong makes you look like a blamer.

Tell me again how Spags is worse than Sutton, moron Chiefs fans.

To be fair, that was just as much on not running the ball and the offense committing turnovers late in the game to allow the Colts back in the game.

Disagree. Flashback to Travis Kelce getting chewed out by Eric Bieniemy for the impromptu hook-and-ladder.

Spott 12-08-2019 10:26 AM

One day the offensive players will complain about Andy Reid calling trick plays from the shotgun formation when all we need is one yard and the other teams defense hasn’t been able to stop the run.

If our secondary tackles their WR's and gets a penalty every play we can run out the clock.

It's amazing how our coaches and players did everything possible wrong to hand the game to Indy.

Ya' think? It's the second to last game of the season and you're going to just line up and knowingly let Sutton and Brady fist your kiester?

Weak shit, Ward.

Weak.

…..or after the Steelers all field goal playoff loss (hard to get too picky here, they didn't score a TD but I don't think they punted, either)

…..or most certainly after the Titans playoff debacle. That second half was 2013 Colts bad.

Bob Suttons Taint 12-08-2019 11:34 AM

This is why Andy Reid makes you nervous. Everyone knew Bob should of been fired at least three years ago if not longer.

Why did Andy keep him? Loyalty, Andy’s own ego and inability to admit his mistake? Either way it cost the team and city a Super Bowl appearance so the Bob hatred will have a permanent place in Chiefs lore.

rabblerouser 12-08-2019 11:47 AM

The most annoying part of this thread :

It's amazing how many people post "should of" instead of "should have".

It's "should've", which is a contraction for "should have".

For ****'s sake.

And before anyone accuses me of being a grammar nazi, I'm not. I make mistakes in context all the time. But "should of" instead of "should've" is fifth grade shit.

chinaski 12-08-2019 11:52 AM

Is it any coincidence that the Atlanta Falcons suck (even more) ever since Sutton was hired on as an assistant there? I think not.

Andy/Alex sucked hard root there, too.

In fact, Andy seems incapable of beating the Titans. I'll be scared shitless if they come back to Arrowhead.

The playoff loss to the Steelers is on the offense. Could the defense have played a bit better? Sure. But you never get perfection. Competence is your minimum requirement and the D gave us that for that game. The offense far from it however.

Right. Score a TD.

But, again, to be fair, the play where Tyreek streaked downfield wide open on a fly pattern and Alex Smith just didn't have the physical ability to get him the ball is what got Mahomes drafted.

Guaranteed.

Clay has a gif of that play.

He should of been fired earlier but it is what it is. Theirs no point in playing the should of, could of, would of game...

Correct, both of you.

And let's not forget the phantom holding call on Fisher during the two point try, either. I don't know what's worse, that call or the non-fumble when Derick Johnson just obliterated Mariota on his sack. Still to this day how those calls went down makes no sense to me.

Right. I just see it as a type of group therapy talking about it, lol. But yes, living in the past does no good, especially when we think about this team in particular. We have Patrick ****ing Mahomes now, and it's past time to write a better story with a kid like him slinging it for us. And it starts today.

Yeah, the players were salty after all the Vikings fans and their SKOL shit invaded Arrowhead a few weeks ago. But you know what? Win home games and that won't happen.

Every winning coach has some regular, dipshit/reerun opponent that gives them fits on the regs, but yeah that's an absurd and shitty one to have to call your "thorn".

Incorrect. The SCW game is where the intelligent fan learns from the MANY mistakes of Lil' Chiefy, and seeks to steer both fans and franchise away from repeating said mistakes. Failure to "play this game" results in too many Chief fans repeating the same tired, circular arguments over and over again which usually involve defending some dipshit coach, player, or owner, when what said fan SHOULD be doing is raking that moron over the coals for continuing to "piss on the carpet", so to speak.
