The first play closely resembles the Kareem touchdown and was a helluva play by the running back here. When we ran it, there were more defenders who had their attention on tyreek who was the man in motion

The NFL has always been a copy cat league. Nice to see our coach be the one being copied rather than being one of the copy cats.

MahiMike 10-01-2017 07:43 PM

Yeah I saw that too.

farmerchief 10-01-2017 07:44 PM

I was watching the Rams/Cowboys, and when that play happened, I thought the same thing. I hadn't seen the Saints until now.

KCrockaholic 10-01-2017 07:47 PM

Yep I noticed the Kamara shovel pass immediately. Thought that was cool, but that also means teams will catch on and adjust soon.

Chief Roundup 10-01-2017 08:24 PM

Come on now. The top is just a pass to a RB route out of the backfield. It has been around and used a long time now. Nothing new, or just because of Ried.
The second one is a more traditional shovel pass not like the misdirection one that we have used a few times this season, but there again this version, not Reids, of the shovel pass has been around for a long long time.

These plays have existed for years. Did you start watching football six weeks ago?

Yeah.

The second one, though, is basically Reid's exact call.

The first is a fairly standard WCO pass.

Are you old enough to remember the early 90's Bills? They used that pass so much it became a running gag from Chris Berman on NFL Primetime.

Football goes in cycles. The shovel pass has not been a particularly popular playcall over the last 15-20 years in the NFL. Just like the "Wildcat" was being used by the Chicago Bears in the 1980's but when it was brought back heavily by the Dolphins it caught teams off guard because it hadn't been used in such a long time. This shovel pass concept falls in line with that. Not much is truly "new" in football, it's just stuff that hasn't been used in a very long time, especially at the NFL level.

The first GIF is an EXACT carbon copy of the TD pass to Hunt against NE. Same formation, same motion, same exact routes all over the field. Ran against the same coverage. That play was absolutely stolen from Reid.

JoeyChuckles 10-01-2017 08:54 PM

Can we call the shovel pass play the Reid? I mean, if it's gonna be popular for a long time, it should be named after the inventor right?

Technically it's Matt Canada OC of Pitt last year that created that exact play, to my knowledge.

rockymtnchief 10-01-2017 09:11 PM

Elway used the shovel pass quite a bit against KC in the 90's.

No not really.
We usually run a WR across the play not in the same direction it is going. We also have tossed it to a TE and a WR that came from the side/end of the formation not a back in the backfield.

Cornstock 10-02-2017 12:12 AM

The first one is predicated on the motion man drawing attention from the secondary. You can't execute it if you don't have a burner who commands that respect.

The second was so purely Reid's play. They didn't execute it nearly as second-nature as we have, but the design is so brilliant against the way NFL defenses are playing right now, you don't need perfect execution in the blocking.

PunkinDrublic 10-02-2017 04:19 AM

Wow the Cowboys defense is such a joke. Rod Marinelli is such an overrated DC.

Yep, Terrel Davis used to tear us up with that play!

Exactly. Shannahan used to run the shovel play on us all the time.

I take it you dont watch much football. This play is beaten to death at the college level and has been for quite some time.

Buns 10-02-2017 07:44 AM

Goff didn't hit him in stride like Smith did though. Much better execution for KC.

Also, didn't have Air Kelce.
