Gates near Sports Complex Should Start Re-Building Soon!

This from the Independence Examiner a few days ago. It won't help Chiefs fans this year, but should be back before the MLB All Star Break next year.

Story is here:

Posted Sep. 16, 2015 at 5:56 AM

Independence, Mo.

It’s taken a longer than first expected, but the new Gates Bar-B-Q on U.S. 40 in Independence should be under construction soon. A fire gutted the 36-year-old restaurant in February.

The company had hoped to reopen, as principal George Gates put it, in time for the Chiefs appearance in the Super Bowl, but insurance and drawing up plans for a restaurant that meets today’s city codes took some time. The company recently got city approval, and Gates says a groundbreaking could be held yet this month.

So when do we get ribs and sweet-potato pies?

“Before the Fourth of July, for sure,” Gates said.

“It’ll be bigger and better and more efficient and comfortable,” he said.

He stressed that the city has been good to work with.

“They are a great city,” he said.

Why so long?

Insurance scams make people wait and avoid pushing the issue regarding payout to avoid suspicion

Is that the Gates this is across from a Walmart that was once Blue Ridge Mall, many moons ago?

It's actually about a half mile west of the Blue Ridge Mall on US 40. If you're familiar with Cool Crest, it's about 100 yards west of there on the opposite side of the street.

Perhaps I should have worded that differently.

The owner said that they would be open by the time the Chiefs appeared in the Super Bowl. Surely they can build a restaurant quicker than that.

Ah, yeah. I really had to dig deep to remember that. Loved Cool Crest.

I used to live off Raytown Rd. right near the Stadiums. That was 19 yrs ago.

Talked to a Guy at Gates today, he said 40 Highway location should re-open sometime in January.

Still haven't figured out why Kansas City doesn't make a little entertainment district on top of the hill. Knock down Dennys, take out a few of those houses. Make something worth while around there.

I wonder why it's taken them nearly 2 years to rebuild. Has Ollie Gates been rebuilding that place by himself brick by brick?

I remember playing golf at cool crest.

While we're talking about BBQ, does anybody have any idea what time LC's opens on Chiefs game days? I was thinking about going there before the playoff game.

I'm sure there's a lot of reasons why, but yea. It's mind boggling why KC never built much up around there.

Taco Bell and Dennys is laughable

Agreed 100%. I don't care if they have to make a carbon copy of Ballpark Village, it'd be awesome to develop that area. Put a Fox Sports KC bar in there, or anything at this point.

gblowfish 01-13-2017 11:24 AM

I talked to a friend of mine who works at the Four Pines Chiropractic next door to Gates on 40 Highway. She said BBQ smoke was coming from the chimney yesterday, so it looks like they're testing the BBQ pit. It should re-open to the public very soon. Baby steps....

I heard they had some license issues that will be cleared up as soon as next week, that is what has been holding them back from opening.

I can't wait, that area is one of my favorite food areas... Gates, Hi Boy and Dixons

Because it's the type of neighbor hood where you put bars on your windows, and reinforce door frames.I used to live over in the area, and I heard gunshots nightly, even had a crack head killed at the end of my street. I'm willing to bet, any entertainment district in the area wouldn't attract the targeted demographic for one of those "Ballpark Village" type places.

Smoke is coming out of the Gates smokestack on US 40 in Independence again today. Think they may be close to opening.

Well, if they rebuilt the pit, I would imagine they have to season it?

Because east is all owned by MODOT..North and South are longstanding neighborhoods.

No, I don't think Mrs. Blowfish would approve of that.

Interesting. I didn't know that and always wondered why nothing has really developed out there.

Sure-Oz 01-25-2017 11:48 AM

Heard it reopens at noon

alpha_omega 01-25-2017 11:48 AM

gblowfish 01-25-2017 12:03 PM

Here's a tip if you want to do this on game day. Call ahead and arrange a carryout order. Its a HELL of a lot faster.

That's actually what I was considering. Getting carryout and taking it to the Complex with me and tailgate.

ptlyon 08-29-2017 12:19 PM

I don't know why you wouldn't wait and try the excellent dining opportunities inside Arrowhead

Gates phone is 816-353-5880. Just don't freak out when they screan "HI MAY I HELP YOU" into the phone. I'd start on this early, their phone will probably be very busy two hours before kickoff.

Dunit35 08-29-2017 12:21 PM

We ate there early this month. Pretty nice building now. Food tasted the same as it always does.

gblowfish 08-29-2017 12:23 PM

A sleeper place to try is Big T's on Blue Parkway, just a couple blocks southeast of LC's BBQ. This would be just a couple miles south of the sports complex, and reachable right off of I-435 on Blue Parkway. If Gates is crazy busy, this would be a good back up plan. I like their BBQ a lot. https://www.yelp.com/biz/big-ts-kansas-city-2

Yeah. That's good too. I went there while Gates was gone. I just think that Gates has the best burnt ends around, so that is my first choice. But Big T's is a great backup.

We went down in that area and I saw Big T's and LC's. Guess we should've stopped. We just ate Q39 30 minutes prior.

Both places are good. Big T's has a drive thru, which rocks.

BTW: If any of you guys need a parking pass for the game, mine is posted on NFL Ticket Exchange for $25. It'll save you some $ if you buy parking in advance.

If you were going to burn down a Gate's that would be the one.

So, did you get some BBQ? Where's did you go?
