Will you watch the UFL?

First game in 59 days!

Introuducing the Las Vegas Locomotives and the California Redwoods!

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shu...urn=nfl,182341

With the league making its television debut 59 days from now, the United Football League figured that it might be about time to release some team names and some uniforms. The first two in the books are the Las Vegas Locomotives and the California Redwoods. Those are the teams you see pictured above, with the Redwoods on the left and the Choo Choo Trains on the right.

It just so happens that these two behemoths will do battle in the UFL's inaugural game on October 10 on Versus.

The uniforms appear to be exactly the same in the design and pattern, with only the fruity colors differing. It doesn't look like the UFL plans on getting all that creative with logos, either.

I'll be honest with you: I'm a little disappointed in Vegas' name. I was hoping for something cheesier and more Vegas-y, like the Las Vegas Gamblers, High Rollers, Pit Bosses, Snake Eyes, or Doublers Down. But no, we get trains. Here's the explanation from the UFL's Roger Goodell, Michael Huyghue:

"Las Vegas was originally established in 1905 with the opening of the Salt Lake, San Pedro and Los Angeles Railroads. We wanted to honor the vast history of the city and the intrinsic benefits that this innovation provided to the community."

Well, hooray for railroad history. There's a topic that captivates America's youth.

As for the Redwoods, a name I like a little better (though it would seem to allow for the color red, or the color of trees to exist somewhere in the uniform), here's the explanation on that one:

"The Redwoods, large, strong trees native to California, symbolize many traits that the UFL and the California franchise plan to embody. The Redwoods and the UFL are reaching for the stars and are eco-friendly."

How important are uniform aesthetics and cool logos and nicknames to the UFL's survival?

The on-field product will certainly be inferior to that of the NFL, so I would guess that things like production value and making sure that nothing looks "minor league" would be important. On the other hand, the XFL and USFL had more distinctive and creative looking squads, and look where they are now. So who knows?

Announcements are still to come on the Florida and New York franchises. All primary colors remain available.

rockymtnchief 08-12-2009 04:34 PM

Grrrrrr...I don't have Versus in my programing package. Now that there's bullriding AND football, I might have to look into it.

Mr. Krab 08-12-2009 04:35 PM

If there isn't anything else on. Heck, i've even watched the CFL the other day to get a football fix.

CrazyPhuD 08-12-2009 04:37 PM

It depends...are there going to be stripper poles on the sidelines?

Looking at their schedule online, it looks like the games will be played on Wed/Thurs nights.

Pretty smart. Six week season with a Championship game on Fri Nov. 27th.

Cool! Then I'll just watch the games at Dempseys Tavern on my usual Wednesday night beer-fest.

Buck 08-12-2009 04:42 PM

I watched the first XFL game.

I didn't watch any other XFL games.
I probably have seen 2 NFL Europe Games in my life.

So, I guess I probably won't.

You know, im thinking this league might work. a BIG might....

USFL, XFL, AFL and NFL Europe were springtime leagues.

At least this league is in the fall when football thirst is at an all time high.

Ultra Peanut 08-12-2009 04:51 PM

I love minor league football. I have a Memphis Maniax helmet.

The UFL is ****ing reeruned. Weeknights? In the FALL? Are you trying to go out of business?

Micjones 08-12-2009 04:53 PM

I'll probably watch once out of sheer curiosity.

I would; i liked watching NFLE during the off season. I liked watching AFL...so I would imagine i would enjoy watching the UFL.

I would think the thirst for football would be higher in the offseason, and yet none of those other leagues have worked. As for me, I'll check out the first game if I'm not doing anything else, but if it is as lame as the XFL, count me out.

How about not playing in the ****ING FALL?

The idea of another league is to cash in when people crave it. On any given weeknight, you can flip to ESPN and watch a college football game or just watch an extremely popular TV show and get your football fix by actually going to a live game on the weekend.

As i mentioned already, they have tried spring time/summer football numerious times with past leagues and failed.

I think they decided to be different this time and go with the fall.

I honestly think this league would be wise to try and sign Vick to help create some "buzz"

Ultra Peanut 08-13-2009 10:41 AM

The USFL was doing reasonably well with spring football, and died only when it tried to go head-to-head with the NFL in the fall. And back then, you couldn't watch 60,000 college games on a given weeknight.

The XFL was a complete cluster**** that still might have survived if it hadn't been so reliant upon NBC.

Honestly, this league makes the XFL look sensible.

JD10367 08-13-2009 10:51 AM

I think having the league's season run in the fall is a big mistake. Have it in the spring, when NFL fans are thirsting for anything with a pointy-ended ball. Trying to have a new league go directly against the NFL is business suicide. I don't care if their games happen on the "off" days for the NFL; we wait, like junkies, for training camp and preseason and then the real games to start, and I doubt most of us will turn our attention even fleetingly to a "fake NFL" at the same time. Move it to February-through-July and you've got a deal.

Spring time is College basketball.... Also after March madness, its time to get outside and take in the sweet weather.

There are college games on now on those nights (Tuesday sometimes, too).

I doubt I'll watch the UFL, except maybe once, out of curiousity.

The Redwoods??

Seriously, really??

Who's their Head Coach, Dick Schmoker??

El Chapo 09-22-2009 12:00 PM

I want to give the UFL a chance, but I also need a break from football for a few days to recharge my battery.

I think it's overkill to have it in the fall. No way I will watch the UFL over the Thursday night college game on ESPN. In addition, I will likely watch ESPN's MAC games on Wednesday October evenings over the UFL.

Looks like most the games are Wed/Thursday and Sat.

CoMoChief 09-22-2009 12:09 PM

If it was in the offseason I would like to watch it. Problem is that would run into problems with college, the draft, and so forth.

ChiefsCountry 09-22-2009 12:19 PM

I would watch if DirectTV hadnt pulled Versus. I still think a Spring Football League would work. The thing is they need to due the NFL Europe like but have it in cities in the USA that would support it. All the other leagues failed bc they went after the NFL or wanted huge television numbers. XFL was great, I thought the level of play wasnt too bad trouble was they put it on primetime on national tv. Of course it was going to fail. Realistically 30 to 40k in attendance should be the benchmark, not the Neilsen ratings IMO.

Looks like most of the Versus games are Wed/Thurs, but it's all over the place with other games on HD Net.... Thursday the 8th (nope, Mizzou/Nebraska), Saturday the 10th... Then Wednesday/Saturday the next week, then Thursday, then Thursday/Friday, then Wednesday.

Even though they're going up against some pretty good Thursday night college games, I don't think having it in the Fall is a huge deal, but why not advertise it as "Wednesday night is for the UFL" or whatever.... having a startup league on two stations and 4 different nights is the dumbest part about it, especially when people don't generally think "hmm, wonder if there's anything good on Versus right now". Maybe it's just a test to see which nights work best, but I think they're setting themselves up for failure.

I'm pretty sure they tried like hell to sign him, and he did show some interest until they started talking numbers. they simply couldnt compete with the eagles salary offered.

if i remember right their offer was in the ballpark of $850,000 which was the max that league would allow. when the eagles offered him like 4 times that for being a backup the choice was easy.

not to mention he is still bankrupt and his lawyer and judge wouldnt have allowed him to take less money, i think he is still like 10 million dollars in dept.

But overall this league seems like it might have some sustainability, look at some of the coaches already signed up (Dennis Green, Jim Hasslet, Jim Fassel, and Ted Cottrell) and some that could eventually sign up if it catches on (Mike Shannahan, Herm Edwards, John Gruden, Romeo Crennel, Bill Billick, Scott Linnehan, and maybe even Bill Cowher). ya they're leftovers who werent much in the NFL *except for cowher* but this could be a good selling point to viewers.

Frosty 10-08-2009 11:02 AM

Comcast and DirecTV are in a pissing match right now over Versus so DirecTV yanked it.

jwazzie 10-08-2009 11:05 AM

I will watch tonight just like I did the XFL. I liked the XFL because it was football when there wasn't any. The problem they will have around here is the Nebraska/Mizzou game tonight and also DTV not having VS. anymore. It will be something to see for the first time. I am also wondering what the crowds will be like.

How is some unproven football league worth anything but a freely broadcast channel?

No, I won't watch. They didn't make their programming readily available to watch.

Horrible mistake. I would gladly tune in if it was on some channel that didn't require me to buy another freaking TV service to watch.

There are so many reasons why these types of things fail... I think the XFL had the best shot, backed by McMahon and the WWE along with NBC (right, wasn't that the channel)?

There's just no interest... the arena leagues had a nice forumla that worked for a while. I definitely think something like this has a better shot of working if it's regionalized, areas that have no true connection to an NFL team... but they have a strong hunger and dedication to football...

But, then again, you're talking about a league that has a talent pool that excites very few...

There is interest - the thing is this you have to it in cities with no NFL teams, make sure their is a tie in with the NFL sort of a minor league system (aka make sure the teams have a fan base tie in), not depend tv ratings focus on stadium attendance 30 to 40k should be the target, and have in the spring.
