Report: Kiffin tells recruit he'll be pumping gas

Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin had some stinging last words for Alshon Jeffrey, one of the nation's top wide receivers, according to ESPN.com. Jeffrey of St. Matthews, S.C., signed with South Carolina last month after an intense recruiting battle with Southern Cal and Tennessee. According to ESPN's Chris Lowe, "Kiffin told Jeffrey that if he chose the Gamecocks, he would end up pumping gas for the rest of his life like all the other players from that state who had gone to South Carolina."

That's some funny shit.

Kiffin is a moron.

Dave Lane 03-10-2009 12:08 PM

Probably true though... :)

I doubt he could find a job pumping gas. Everyone's gone self service.

ferrarispider95 03-10-2009 12:13 PM

not sure about the gamecocks, but Florida was inflict plenty of damage for both on the vols

Ultra Peanut 03-10-2009 12:14 PM

Awesome. He's just as big a douchebag as Bruce Pearl.

He should have said "flipping burgers" instead. Kiffin is a friggin' n00b.

Sam Hall 03-10-2009 12:18 PM

I'm looking forward to seeing the Vols get destroyed by Florida, Georgia and Alabama. Lane, it was a bad idea to mess with Urban Meyer and Nick Saban.

beach tribe 03-10-2009 12:22 PM

Kiffen's gonna turn my boys around. Seriously, if he can get an ounce of offense from them they're gonna be hell to deal with.

CoMoChief 03-10-2009 12:23 PM

I can see Sidney Rice pumping gas sometime in the near future.

Same with Troy Williamson (he was a Gamecock IIRC)

beach tribe 03-10-2009 12:26 PM

Eric Berry= the next Ed Reed. Dude is going to be a monster this season.

Top 10 pick as a S.

DaKCMan AP 03-10-2009 12:27 PM

Tennessee's going to get rolled. Expect Kiffin to be fired in a year or two. He walks right in without ever accomplishing anything and starts poking the biggest guys on the block. Florida fans have gotten tired of Tennessee (a one-sided rivalry gets boring) but now everyone is fired up for the game this year. Ask Georgia how it works when you upset Urban and the Gators - and Tennessee can expect 10x worse.

He should have tattooed the recruit's name on his arm. That always seems to work with the best and brightest.

We'll see if FL's 10 total plays they run on offense keep working. They are/were a great team, but their offense is so boring to watch. It's like watching a cheeser play madden. That stupid spread option Tebow fake handoff draw is sickening to watch. Gotta hand it to then though, it works.

Our D is going to be nasty period. If lane can get that O turned around we may be able to give FL a run for their money. Our D is about the only one fast enough to defend that stupid college spread option. Did I mention I hate watching that crap succeed?

ROFL

Florida will have no trouble putting up 45+ on your D. Since it's at The Swamp I'll be disappointed with anything less than 55+.

Florida's O might drop off some without Percy and Louis Murphy, but others will step up. DeBose, while not Percy, will be expected to fulfill some of that role.

I expect Florida's D to be, by far, the best in the country. We have everyone back from last year's team 2-deep. That's all 11 starters and all 11 reserves. Last year's D was #4 in the country.

58kcfan89 03-10-2009 02:02 PM

Never thought I'd see the day Al Davis looked smart. The more Kiffin opens his mouth, the smarter Skeletor looks. I'm gunna go check hell for ice now...

You only scored 30 on UT last year and now they have Monte fucking Kiffin, only one of the best defensive coordinators in football over the last two decades.

It was 17-0 and over in the 1st quarter. This year the game is in The Swamp and Florida has every reason to run up the score. Remember the score the last time Tennessee came to The Swamp? (hint: we scored more than 30)

BWillie 03-10-2009 06:35 PM

Not in Oregon. It's illegal for a customer to pump his own gas in that state.

As opposed to Tennessee employing the R2P2 offense the last 5 years? Quit complaining and :deevee: about it and stop it.

Fulmer, and Herm both in one off-season. R2P2 is dead.

Lane Kiffin Denies Gas Pumping Comment
By Dashiell Bennett, 4:00 PM on Wed Mar 11 2009

Lane Kiffin says a lot of crazy things, but he would never say that living in South Carolina is a one-way ticket to death by gasoline fumes. That's just not his style.

Kiffin denies that he told future Gamecock Alshon Jeffery that he would be pumping gas for the rest of his life if he chose South Carolina over Tennessee. So does that mean Jeffery and his coach (who also says he heard the remark) are liars? Because that does sound like something Kiffin might say....

"I never said that to Alshon, nor would I say anything like that," Kiffin said, ESPN reported. "That's just not something I would say."

Fair enough. But given that Kiffin is already on record with multiple, uh ... distortions of the truth, I'd say this high school kid that no one has ever heard of has slightly more credibility than the Volunteers coach. Maybe it was just a misunderstanding or a bad phone connection or something, but did anyone who heard the story really believe that that's not the way Kiffin does things?

"That's not the way we're going to do things here, and it's something I don't condone," Kiffin said, ESPN reported. "Things get said all the time in recruiting, but I don't know where (the pumping gas comment) came from."

Maybe he really said "pumping gas into to your shiny new Acura Legend," but the rest got cut off or something? By the way, Florida is already using his quotes for bulletin board material so, yes, I think everyone would just prefer that Lane stick with "no filter" strategy.
