Is something going on? A lot of my friends on facebook have said they were proud of the kids there or were in prayer for the kids there? I looked on the news websites and didn't see anything pertaining to that....anyone have a clue?

Hundreds counter Phelps' anti-gay picketers at Shawnee Mission East

When Fred Phelps and his Westboro Baptist Church picket a soldier’s funeral, a cadre of Patriot Guard riders typically shows up to protest the picketers.

But when the Westboro group showed up this afternoon at Shawnee Mission East High School in Prairie Village, hundreds of students and adults gathered on three corners to show their disdain for the church’s anti-gay message.

The Phelps group was confined to the fourth corner at 75th Street and Mission Road.

Westboro church members believe that God is punishing America for tolerating homosexuality. They have drawn harsh criticism across the nation for picketing at funerals of servicemen and servicewomen.

Their message didn’t sit well with many students at the high school where, according to student Jake Davidson, there is a Gay and Straight Alliance at the school and students elected a homecoming king in 2007 who was openly gay.

“Everyone is equal whether you’re gay or straight,” said Davidson, a 16-year-old junior from Leawood and an organizer of the student protest.

“It’s really cool that everyone wants to be involved and take a stand against this. It doesn’t surprise me that everyone wants to help out.”

He said word of the counterprotest ran through the school like wildfire.

“It’s pretty much all anyone has been talking about this week,” he said.

Karl Krawitz, East principal, said the administration worked with Prairie Village police to make sure the dismissal of school went smoothly, and the demonstration did not impede traffic or the dismissal process.

“The safety of our students and staff is a top priority,” he said.

Police were out in force to make sure that the two groups were separated and that traffic flowed smoothly through the intersection.

all I know with facebook right now is people are getting SOS messages from their friends and need money or something bad will help their friend thats in trouble. someone already lost $1,500 to the scam.

Ultimately the counter protest will bring more attention to Phelp's gang than if they had done nothing.

These people don't deserve the time of day. If people start ignoring them, they'll go away eventually.

I'm a proud grad of SME. Nice to see them slamming that dickhead. "We're SME! Our football team is rocking because we're white and slow and rich!"

I don't even use facebook and I get those spam emails almost every day.

I don't have facebook either and I would get those kind of emails, too. I always wanted to play along, but didn't want to give info unknowingly. I read about this facebook scam on CNN.com.

I have a son that goes there and I went there myself. The Phelps clan was protesting that a really great young man who was named Homecoming King and attended the dance with his boyfriend last year. He's openly gay and is a great kid who I have the pleasure of knowing myself.

All I know is my son was home sick with the flu so we just drove by to honk. We sat on Mission Rd. trying to turn left for a good 20 minutes. The cops did NOT have traffic under control.

There were people everywhere. My son got calls from kids he knows who were headed there from Bonner Springs HS, Rockhurst, Sion, St. Theresa, etc.

I hope phelps burn. No matter what you don't taunt the dead or make fun of people who are diff. Then you just to be mean.

Hah, that's my highschool.

I used to think the same way. But the Phelps church isn't growing. It's dying. I'm proud to know that kids have the moxy to organize a peaceful demonstration and show support for their classmate.

Completely agree. The more the spotlight is on this cockroach the less he will be able to dupe others.

I tend to agree with this as well. I thought the kids were doing a good thing protecting their turf. I think the 'cburch' are an acting troupe who get a thrill out of people by being outlandish. I saw one of them take an American flag out of a bag and blow her nose on it.

They obviously are acting out to get publicity and it works. Where I think it's wrong is that the MEDIA focuses so much attention on them. Let people put together grass roots counter protests like this one but keep the media coverage of them at a minimum.

Exactly. Giving attention whores attention is stupid. If 20 idiots stand in an empty field and yell "God hates queers" at the top of their lungs and nobody heard them, would they still make a sound?

Don't give an idiot an audience. When you protest and argue with them, you get demonstrations from Fred Phelps and 6,000 posts from DarthCarlSatan in 6 months.

I find the Phelps phamily to be more interesting.

Uh, I had to pick up my other son from school down the street from the high school. It was on our way. He wanted to go with me to see it since he'd planned on participating and had helped with some of the promoting and because he's friends with the person in question.

And he thinks I'm an awesome Mom.

Shit man, my high school could never pull of shit like this. Everybody hated everybody too much. Good to see positive things being done.
