Just When You Thought The College Season Couldn't Get Any More Bizzare

If OU advances to the BCS title game and defeats the SEC champion AND Texas goes to the Fiesta Bowl and defeats it's opponent, could we have two National Champions from the same division of one conference? OU wins the BCS title and Texas gets the AP crown?

Yes, please.

Considering Oklahoma hasn't won a bowl game in like 6 years I think this is asking alot.

Considering that this Oklahoma team is probably one of the best they had in some time, I think they'll probably give Florida or Alabama a good battle.

oklahoma is like weed. Put them in a bowl and they will get smoked

People said they were the best ever before they played USC...we saw how that turned out.

I do not and will never trust Oklahoma in a bowl game, the lengthened time to prepare for them gives something away...even Boise picked it out.

I would never, NEVER bet on OU in a bowl game.

I thought the USC team who lost to Texas was supposed to be the best team ever.

It would be funny if Florida beats Alabama but they don't leapfrog TX in the BCS formula. That would put OU and Texas in the title game.

Bowser 11-30-2008 09:50 PM

It just won't happen, but can you imagine all the happy people if Mizzou pulls out an upset for the Big XII title. A three loss team in a BCS bowl game with THREE higher ranked teams from the same conference licking up the scraps? I would love to see it just to see the reprecutions to the BCS.

I wasn't asking for it, just throwing out another hypothetical, co-national champions from the same conference.

Bizzare.. and entirely possible. As a life longer hater of Mizzou and OU I must say definitely cheering for Mizzou. Get the job done Missouri and send them back to OKiehom*.

Yeah, that would be great. We could get to listen to the MUrons gloating again. I hope OU beats MU by 50.

Don't be mad because Mizzou won the north.

Basileus777 11-30-2008 10:49 PM

If OU beats Florida/Alabama the AP isn't going to vote Texas as the NC.

I would actually like that to happen, despite the fact that we would have to hear about it for a long time from MU fans. I just don't want to see OU disgrace the conference again.

Meh, you won't hear it from me, except for when overzealous Beakers throw around "ORANGE BOWL"! ;)

I just really want to see the whole BCS system shart down its leg. Again.

I think 90% of MU fans would recognize that, if we were to beat OU, it would be because of some divine intervention. I'd be pleased as punch, but I wouldn't be talking trash.

There's another scenario out there as well:

http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/footbal...n=ncaaf,125550

If Florida beats Alabama in the SEC championship, it still may not be enough for it to leap frog Texas in the BCS standings, thus sending Texas to play Oklahoma for the National Championship game!

If that scenario occurs (assuming OU beats Mizzou), then T-Tech gets the Fiesta Bowl bid, Okie State moves up to the Cotton Bowl.

That presents my dream scenario of the Holiday Bowl choosing among Nebraska who beat KU who beat Mizzou who beat Nebraska. A possibility might have the Holiday Bowl picking KU to come play there. More than likely, they would pick Nebraska unless Shuckers want to go to Gator Bowl. Not sure if Gator Bowl is interested in another Big XII team other than Nebraska if Nebraska goes to Holiday Bowl.

Strange days indeed.

Not gonna happen. If Florida beats Alabama all of the coaches votes that Texas picked up last week will switch to Florida. Texas jumped Florida last week when they beat aTm at home while Florida won at #20 FSU. The only reason Texas jumped Florida is because the coaches tried to get Texas into the Big XII Champ Game. That illogical jump would be corrected with a Florida win at Alabama. Florida is already ahead in the Harris poll and their computer ranking would get a huge boost with a victory over #1 Alabama.

Chiefnj2 12-03-2008 08:24 AM

Florida and USC are the two best teams in college football right now.

Well, I think that's what you are hoping will happen, but saying its not going to isn't facing the reality of the possibility. This is from the ESPN Big 12 Blog:

Quote:

Jason from Lincoln, Neb. writes: Both Texas and Oklahoma have excellent arguments not only for the Big 12 title but for the national championship. If I were a Texas fan, I would not be rooting for Missouri, but instead would be rooting for Florida to beat Alabama in an ugly game. If you take a close look at the BCS standings, you will find that Florida is already ahead of Texas in the Harris poll and will not likely extend that margin by a lot with a win this weekend. Also, the USA today poll is fairly close and no one-loss team is going to dominate that poll...so it comes down to computer rankings. With the SEC in somewhat of a slump this year (LSU with five losses, Georgia with three losses, and Florida losing to a four-loss team), I don't expect Florida's computer ranking to come anywhere near what Texas has accomplished this season. What do you think?

Tim Griffin: Jason, I agree with you. I think the Longhorns' best chance at playing in the BCS title game would be if Florida does win out in an ugly game over Alabama, which I think the Crimson Tide's strong defense and kicking game could be able to force. So it will certainly be interesting to watch.
I know flat out denial is a coping mechanism but this is a very real possibility. Couple that with the fact that the regular season contest between OU and Texas was a highly entertaining game and the plot line to "really decide the issue on the field" between these two might not prompt as many voters to switch their opinions as you theorize. Its not like Texas doesn't command its own pull in the BCS world. Additionally, such a "swing" in votes might cast further disgust upon the system. People would argue it no longer matters, as long as you are near the top, the voters will "place" into the championship game whomever they want. I don't buy your brush off that this isn't concerning you just a tiny bit.

No, it doesn't concern me at all and it's not a very real possibility. Florida has been down in the computer polls all year. They are still 6th overall in the computer rankings. Texas does not play this week so Florida already has that advantage if they win. Additionally, Alabama has 2 #1 computer rankings and a #3. A Florida win over Bama will help their computer ranking tremendously. Florida was ahead of Texas prior to last week when Texas jumped them in the coaches poll (only because of the OU/UT thing). That will be reversed and Florida will be #2 at worst if they're SEC Champs. People wont opt for OU/UT because IT ALREADY HAPPENED just like they didn't opt for OSU/UM in 2006.
