Herm on Sirius

Tim & Pat talk to him every Tuesday @ 3pm (CST).

This week's summary:

- Pat Surtain is hurt (shoulder) & definitely is out; Carr will start in his place. (No word on McBride)
- Not sure who the QB will be yet. (He said he must have some bad karma from something he's done, because he can't keep a QB healthy)
- Even though we couldn't do anything on offense, we were only down by 6 at halftime, so they made some adjustments, but just couldn't stay on the field offensively. It was tough with the young QB, but he seemed to get into a rhythm by the end of the game.
- He likes it when Larry gets mad & speaks out; it shows how bad he wants to win. And he agreed with Larry, no secret that they want to get him 20 - 25 carries. But that can't happen until the QB starts making plays downfield to ease up the 8/9 man fronts that everyone is playing against us. When we got down by 2 scores, we had to pass so that takes away the run game.
- He's having a lot of fun coaching up all the youth and the veterans are staying positive and teaching the young guys.

He also thinks part of what happened was that maybe the young guys got a little cocky after playing so well in New England and having a chance to win the game at the end. Couple that with watching the Raiders get blown out at home. He anticipates they will bounce back this week and play really well.

Redrum_69 09-16-2008 02:38 PM

LOL

play really well?

and last week they anticipated a blow out.

great.

GOOD JOB HERM. /golfclap

you poor excuse for a coach

seclark 09-16-2008 02:39 PM

WHEW...i feel a lot better.
sec

Bowser 09-16-2008 02:39 PM

Herm should just be a PR guy.

Chief_in_Commander 09-16-2008 02:40 PM

"He likes it when Larry gets mad" - Me too if he vents it on the field and not just crying to the press

Micjones 09-16-2008 02:40 PM

Herman Edwards has a future in the media.
He's one hell of a spin doctor.

Your starting Runningback has thrown Chiefs brass under the bus and you pass that off as him being fiery?

One day it'll all be over.

Did he check the film? He said he was gonna check the film. Did he check the film? Said he was going to. "Gotta check the film". You know, cause we gave up. And we gave up 300 yards rushing and when asked how that could happen Herm said: "I dunno. Gap control? Gotta check the film".

"Is this interview over? cause I really gotta check the film".

SBK 09-16-2008 02:47 PM

I'm going to have fun watching us run into 9 man fronts with Slash as our QB this week.

ChiefRon 09-16-2008 02:48 PM

Yes, he should be in PR / media. His attitude always freaks me out. He's so dang upbeat about everything.

They asked him, "Look Herm, we know you wanted to be competitive, but you also knew what this year is all about for the Chiefs, everyone knows you're in a rebuilding year with the Chiefs, and this comes with that..."

And he's like, "It is what is it. But we're working hard. And I'm having so much fun coaching this kids up. Our staff is resilient, and we'll be okay. Just fine."

If I hear this one more time, I'm gonna puke.

I almost wish he would have been pissed like I am about what happened on the field Sunday. I wish they would have asked him, why did they replace Solari with someone, only to make the same mistakes, or even dumber ones (some scrub playing QB & the option and stuff)...

"He also thinks part of what happened was that maybe the young guys got a little cocky after playing so well in New England"

WTF? They played putrid in NE and were lucky to be in the game.

I absolutely f'n despise Herm's outlook on football. He clearly cannot separate the signal from the noise. [the systematic ability to move the the football and stop the other team from moving the ball vs. the final score (which has a lot of randomness in it -- fumbles, unusual 3rd down conversion rates, etc.)]

To Herm, playing a team close means you played well. A ****ing 7th grader should be able to understand the idiocy of that.

Well, he said some of the young guys made mistakes. He pointed out 125 yards came on 4 runs on 3rd down, and each time a young guy made a mistake, gap-control I think he said.

Not sure how that makes him feel better though. What about the other 175 yards we gave up?

Oh yeah, I remember the whole "No way does he ruin THIS offense", and other such wisdom. The whole argument of how the Chiefs had WAY better talent than the Jets, so he is going to have a chance here, blahblahblah....

Ah, the innocence of youth.

He took the same offense, minus Trent Green and Willie Roaf, to 9-7.

Dick Vermeil had both in 2004 and went 7-9.

What a ****ing joke.

Our players.........cocky?!?!?!? What in the holy blue ****ing hell do they have anything to be cocky about.....they ****ing lost 11 games in a row!!!!!

Cant give Larry the ball 25 times a game until the passing game goes downfield.........The problem with that is our playcalling doesn't allow for that to happen..........EVER.

We were only down 6 at halftime...........what he forgets is that we were playing the 2nd worst team in football......at all levels in the OAK Raiders.

Players sound positive......yeah MY ****ING ASS......sounds like LJ is being REALLY positive about what's going on at Arrowhead. I'm more than sure people like Waters and Gonzo are not too happy with whats going on.

Herm's a ****ing joke.

Reason being?
Edwards had a much more balanced team.

Vermeil's offense was much more productive. That team's Achiles Heel was its defense (29th in the NFL).

Jets fans took Terry Bradway and made him their GM. He hired Herm. The Chiefs actually caused the demolition of the Jets.

If I was a betting man I'd pick the rams over us ANYDAY.

At least the Rams lost to 2 really good football teams. We got blown out ......at home.......against the Raiders. The same Raiders that won 2 games last season, one of which was against us....imagine that.......AT HOME!

We can't run
We can't pass
We can't stop the run
We can't play good ST

All of these areas have greatly digressed since Herm's been here.

The only reason we did okay stopping the pass was that we played Cassel and Russell.

Also, why pass when you can run for 300 yards against the "Swiss Chiefs" defense?

I'm sick to death of this coach. Last week's blowout loss was what it took to push me over the edge. But ... "It's oooookaaaay."

jjchieffan 09-16-2008 04:53 PM

I asked my dad the other day if this is what it was like to be a Chiefs fan before the Schottenheimer years. (I didn't care for football as a kid) His response was that those years were not this bad. That is saying something, because those were some awful years by anyones account.

Well, then he's clearly forgotten.

2-12
3-12
4-12
5-9

3-6

Not sure I'd call it "Bad Karma", more like you put guys on the OL like McIntire and Black and think they are as good as any ProBowl player.

Maybe the QB could start making plays down field IF YOU'D TAKE HIS LEASH OFF AND LET HIM THROW DOWNFIELD!!!

I don't even think the QB has to make the play, if the opposing Ds see we are willing to chunk the ball downfield 20+ yards, and we have one of our fast recievers going deep on every play, they'll at least have to account for the chance of a long pass and will have to play off the line more.

If the Chiefs try to pass more often, they're going to get their QB's killed because of the right side of the line.

Oh...

funny me and my dad had the same conversation yesterday and we both agreed that then was WAY worse. you have to remember that lasted far longer than now,(so far) AND we ACTUALLY PICKED A QB IN THE FIRST, oh AND HE SUCKED,. so until we get to that point then was worse. we havent even been blacked out, yet. back then to actually see a game you HAD to go, and boy we sure did. m we went to lots of games and had alot of fun together

Oh...

Actually, if they take a fast slot guy and tell him to just start running towards the endzone at the snap, with someone running in the 4.3 range, they should be able to be 10-15 yards beyond the LOS by the time a QB hits the final step of a 3 step drop. They should be able to be 20 yards down field by the time the QB finsihes a 5 step drop.

If we wait for a player to zig, zag, juke, etc on their route, the QB will get killed, but if we have a flyer running straight at the snap, the downfield threat is there every time. Not only that, keep in mind, this isn't necesarily the goto guy on every play, his job is to stretch the D and if they don't stretch, you hit him quick past them and they will start stretching down the field.

My main idea is if the downfield threat is there on any given play, it will have to be respected - especially if we are running out of play action and the D won't be able to just stack the OL to stop the run.
