When it comes to being an All-American, Darren McFadden doesn't have to settle for second.

The Arkansas running back and two-time Heisman Trophy runner-up was one of four players voted to The Associated Press All-American team for the second consecutive season.

Michigan offensive tackle Jake Long, LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey and Ohio State linebacker James Laurinaitis were the other two-time first-team AP All-Americans on the team released Tuesday.

Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow joins McFadden in the backfield along with Central Florida's Kevin Smith, who leads the nation with 2,448 yards and 30 touchdowns. Smith is the first All-American from UCF, which began playing major college football in 1996.

Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel, who finished fourth in the Heisman voting, was voted to the second team. Hawaii's Colt Brennan, third in the Heisman voting, was the third-team quarterback.

McFadden set school records with 1,725 yards rushing and 2,172 all-purpose yards, breaking the marks he set last year. He scored 16 touchdowns and threw four TD passes, working as a quarterback out of Arkansas' shotgun Wild Hog formation.

The junior has said he'll decide whether to return to school for his senior season after the AT&T Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1 against Daniel and Missouri, though he may have given a hint as to which was he was leaning after the Heisman ceremony when he said, "I think my quarterbacking days are about to come to a halt."

Kansas State receiver Jordy Nelson went from walk-on to All-American.

Nelson didn't get a scholarship after playing at Riley County High School, 20 miles from Kansas State's Manhattan campus. He redshirted in 2003 and was a defensive back in 2004, again not seeing any game time.

He moved to receiver in 2005 and started all 11 games, catching 45 passes for 669 yards. In 2006, he battled injuries and caught 39 passes for 547 yards.

This season, Nelson became a star. He ranked second in the country in both receptions (122) and receiving yards (1,606) behind fellow All-American Michael Crabtree of Texas Tech.

Crabtree set NCAA freshman records with 125 receptions for 1,861 yards and 21 touchdowns. Fellow redshirt freshmen Jeremy Maclin from Missouri (all-purpose player) and Arizona State kicker Thomas Weber also made the first team.

The last freshman to be an AP All-American was Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson in 2004.

Crabtree was also one of four players unanimously selected to the first team by a panel of 12 media members, along with McFadden, Dorsey and Southern California defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis.

Tebow became the first sophomore to win the Heisman on Saturday night. He was the second-rated passer in the country, led the Gators in rushing and became the first major college player with at least 20 rushing touchdowns and at least 20 TD passes in the same season.

Missouri's Martin Rucker, who led the nation's tight ends with 81 catches, gave the Tigers two All-Americans.

Long was joined on the offensive line by Kansas tackle Anthony Collins, guards Duke Robinson of Oklahoma and Martin O'Donnell of Illinois and Wake Forest center Steve Justice.

On the defensive line with Dorsey and Ellis were ends Chris Long from Virginia and George Selvie of South Florida.

Penn State's Dan Connor, Colorado's Jordan Dizon and Laurinaitis were the linebackers. They were also the three finalists for the Butkus Award, given to the nation's top linebacker. Laurinaitis won the award.

In the secondary, the cornerbacks were Aqib Talib from Kansas and Antoine Cason from Arizona. The safeties were Jamie Silva from Boston College and Craig Steltz from LSU, each with six interceptions.

Cincinnati's Kevin Huber was the punter. He led the nation with a 46.9-yard average.

The Big 12 had eight players selected to the first team, leading all conferences. The Big Ten and Southeastern Conference were second with four All-Americans each.

The AP snubbed Andre Smith , the sophomore man-child of a left tackle from Alabama.

He did make the first team All-SEC squad. It's too bad you don't watch the elite because your college football world revolves around the inferior Big XII.

Too bad this isn't an SEC award, it's a National award.
And the Big 12 is so inferior that they doubled the number of first team All-Americans as the all mighty SEC.

It's subjective because the writers that vote for this honor don't watch 20-25 games that would be needed to make an expert opinion. And they definitely don't see all the action in the mid-majors, i.e. the Sun Belt, MAC, C-USA, M-West, WAC.

There wasn't a sophomore listed among the offensive linemen on the AP All-American squads so that isn't an indictment on Andre Smith. That's fine, my boy Andre will enter next fall as a Preseason All-American, make the 1st team AP squad and possibly take home the Outland Trophy, before being a first round draft pick in the 2009 draft.

I am not going to back down because a deserving player got snubbed. Andre Smith is an All-American. The flawed system doesn't reward underclassmen. It took 75 years for the voters to finally recognize a deserving sophomore for the Heisman.

Andre Smith shared the Jacobs Trophy with Jonathan Luigs, who just so happened to win the Rimington Award, which goes to the best center in the country. Luigs is a consensus All-American. You don't think a sophomore is deserving who shares the "Best offensive lineman honor" with a player of that caliber then you're just a closed minded fool.

You're absolutely right about the system being flawed about not allowing underclassman. So flawed in fact, that five(5) underclassman made the first team list. I'll say it again, your guy didn't even make the 2nd or 3rd teams, yet you're claiming he was snubbed.

This year's AP list lost credibility not having Andre Smith on it.

I am complaining Smith got snubbed and has a strong case to be one. The only knock on him so far he's a sophomore. He has the resume and the game film to back it up.

Keep reveling in your farce of an All-American list. It's not much different than your typical Pro Bowl roster.

All the underclassmen like Tebow, Crabtree and Selvie have commonly available measureables called statistics to validate their status.

It's a lot tougher for an offensive lineman since all they have is game film and word of mouth.

My boy was the best offensive lineman in the finest football conference in the country. If that doesn't qualify as an All-American, I don't know what does.

I am telling you Andre's game-film and play speak for itself. He should be recognized nationally, but offensive line is the toughest place for an underclassman to garner attention. The offensive line All-Americans are predetermined during the preseason and it's hard for a young guy to break into a group of seniors and juniors that typically have 40 starts under their belt.

Collins is very good and should be good at the next level. However, when he played hurt against MU, Sulak spent quite a bit of time in KU's backfield and Collins was often the responsible party.

What I'm really having a tough time understanding is why you are so desperately trying to convince Planet members that your "boy" is so great and deserves to be All-American? What in the world compels you to join a CHIEFS message board and post nothing but post after post of blabble that is nothing more than a man crush you have on this Andre Smith guy. And at 6-4, 348, that's a BIG crush. NTTATWWT.

I have nothing against Long, Collins, Baker, Clady or Stanchek, but Smith should be there over Ryan Clady. Clady is a good techician and a fine run blocker, but he's not an exceptional pass blocker. He's average against speed rushers around the edge.

Andre Smith was a lot more impressive in all facets of blocking against tougher competition.

I admittedly have little knowledge of your boy. But are you saying that you personally have more knowledge of every offensive lineman in the country compared to the panel of voters? Your boy didn't make it. Hope he makes it next year, he is after all only a sophomore. It isn't the end of the world that he didn't make the 1st, 2nd or 3rd string All-American list because he's a sophomore.

You gotta remember all the old confederates are down there waiting for the South to rise again. Hell, they still think they won the Civil War and that Equal Rights were their idea.

I don't have a Big 12 team so this is not a slam JMO. I think Talib is overrated. The times I have seen him play he just has not impressed me.

He's a little overrated in that he gets burned every now and then relying on a safety. But he still is a damn good coverage corner.

You being a Big 12 guy you have most likely seen more of him. I don't have a clue what he runs the 40 in but his football speed is not that impressive IMO.

Yeah, him playing hurt really made things difficult on Reesing as well as the running game. Still, I'm not sure if would have been better to use his backup. I saw his backup make a lot of mistakes in the game the previous week against ISU.

Terribilis 12-11-2007 05:15 PM

omg the SEC is clearly under rated!!! They never get any national attention. They never get considered for ANY national awards. The Big 12 is the media darlings. Andre Smith got screwed!!!

I would say that I agree that he is a little overrated. He is definitely not a true old shut down corner. However, he makes a lot of good plays. Every now and then, he gets beaten and that's when you take notice. I think his All American status is more a reflection of the competition than his domination. Don't get me wrong. The guy is a stud and is very solid, but he is by no means a great CB. Seems to me that he is better suited as a zone CB. All that said, I do think he's good enough that he will play in the NFL next year or the year after.

ROYC75 12-11-2007 05:53 PM

Collins will probally come out cause of the attention he has gotten.......

But given another year, he will be a man amongst boys, a beast and a quality LT.

If KC could get him cheap this year and teach him the NFL ? :)

Orange Cameltoe is generally an idiot, but Andre Smith is a stud and already one of the best linemen in the country.

Hence why he can't even beat out Paris Lenon on one of the worst defenses in the league.

Major reach by the Lions ... as usual.

Just remember, Andre is just a sophomore. Vindication is going to be sweet.

Vindication is sweet. Zach and kskater are my bitches. ROFL

I remember when I used to get drunk and high and watched porno, I thought I was bad ass. Then I got sober.

I believe he is orange cameltoe. He nailed the prediction.

kstater 11-25-2008 05:03 PM

Congratulations on being named a finalist?

I don't see how I got PWNED though. Unless they retroactively named him to last years all-American list.

mikeyis4dcats. 11-25-2008 05:03 PM

how exactly did you own them? Andre Smith has yet to win the Outland or be named All-American.

Now, he may very well be given both, but he hasn't yet.

And I don't see anyone in this thread arguing he wasn't a good player, just that he wasn't a 2007 AA.

You're a complete and utter ****ing idiot.

And you will be banned again in 5, 4, 3........

Gino Torretta won the 1992 Heisman over Marshall Faulk. The people know who the better player was.

Just because Andre Smith didn't earn All-American honors in 2007 that doesn't mean Kirk Barton had a superior season.

There is so much politics involved in college football that I can't believe fans take these honors and awards to heart like they are undisputable accolades.

Smith has been recognized as one of the top three interior linemen in the country (including the defensive side of the ball). It's pretty evident that you have been PWNED when you said he wasn't worthy of top 15 consideration last year (1st, 2nd and 3rd All-American)

I already told you Andre Smith played better than Kirk Barton last year.

Lets just take the media's word for it. Lets never question anything sportswriters do because they are always right.

It's not just fan opinion, there are endorsements out there of Smith's All-American caliber play as a sophomore.

In 2007, Smith was a co-winner of the SEC's Jacobs Blocking Trophy along with Arkansas' Jonathan Luigs. Luigs won the Rimington Award which goes to the best center in the country.

Smith should have been a third-team All-American in the very least. He was snubbed.

What do you have for me now, Mikey?
