Kobe Bryant died in a helicoper crash in Calabasas Sunday morning ... TMZ Sports has confirmed.

Kobe was traveling with at least 3 other people in his private helicopter when it went down. A fire broke out. Emergency personnel responded, but nobody on board survived. 5 people are confirmed dead. We're told Vanessa Bryant was not among those on board.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Kobe has famously used a helicopter to travel for years -- dating back to when he played for the Lakers. He was known for commuting from Newport Beach, CA to the STAPLES Center in DTLA in his Sikorsky S-76 chopper.

KB is survived by his wife Vanessa, and their four daughters -- Gianna, Natalia and Bianca and their newborn Capri.

Kobe has recently been spotted out at NBA games with his daughter Gianna -- a rising star basketball player herself. Their youngest daughter, Capri, was just born in June 2019.

Kobe is widely considered one of the greatest NBA players of all time -- making 18 All-Star teams during his 20 year career with the Lakers. He's a 5-time NBA champion.

No Survivors in Fiery Helicopter Crash on Hillside in Calabasas Area: Officials
Posted 9:59 AM, January 26, 2020, by Kristina Bravo, Updated at 11:18AM, January 26, 2020

Update:

There were no survivors after a helicopter crashed on a hillside in the Calabasas area on Sunday morning, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Officials believe there may have been multiple fatalities, Fire Capt. Tony Imbrenda said.

Previous story:

Crews are looking for survivors after a fiery helicopter crash on a hillside in the Calabasas area on Sunday morning, authorities said.

Deputies with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Lost Hills station responded to the scene near Las Virgenes Road and Willow Glen Street at around 10 a.m., the agency said.

Flames that erupted in the crash have been extinguished, and officials were looking for survivors, the Sheriff's Department said at around 10:30 a.m.

Sources at the scene believe there may have been multiple fatalities, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"I heard the plane splutter and then a boom," L.A. Times reporter Richard Winton tweeted earlier, saying conditions were foggy in the area.

I'll take that as confirmation.

Damn. I'm not even much of a basketball fan, and that hits pretty hard. Damn.

Kobe was my guy.

Just brutal news.

chinaski 01-26-2020 01:44 PM

Well this is just terrible. Ugh, feel sick to my stomach about this.

FWIW, the nearest airport to Calabasas (KVNY) has been reporting IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) with 2.5 Statute Miles Visibility and 1500 Overcast most of the morning.

I have a lot of helicopter experience as a reporter, and while those conditions are not out of the realm of possibility, it is most certainly a contributing factor, barring catastrophic mechanical issues.

The terrain gradually increases going West toward that area from KVNY, and most likely he has/had a house in the hills with a pad. Regardless, pure speculation on my part, and while I am not a big NBA fan, this deeply saddens me.

****!
