yep, that went about as I expected. Mediocre and unexciting with a few exceptions until the main event. I knew that last fight would be insane.

I have no idea how Teixeira lasted so long taking that kind of a beating.

Germaine de Randamie has announced that she will never fight Cyborg because she's a cheater or whatever. She's also said she plans to go back to 135 rather than defend her FW belt.

I think the UFC should make her the first reigning champion that they just outright cut.

Brazilian PPV this weekend

Friday

11am - (Fightpass) - FNG 68

Judging from tapology rankings, this is a very high quality card by local promotion standards, approaching Bellator levels. Unfortunately its on at a very inconvenient time for those of us who work regular hours. If you are home at about 1pm, then the last 4 fights might be worth watching

3pm - (Fightpass) - Cage Warriors 84

More convenient time, but this is only an average quality card by local promotion standards.

Saturday

7pm TV - (5:30pm Fightpass/7pm FS1/9pm PPV) - UFC 212 Aldo vs. Holloway

They always seem to do this to us for PPV's in Brazil. This card is top-heavy, they included just enough at the end to make me want to buy the PPV with a FW title unification bout, a strawweight #1 contender bout, and Vitor Belfort is still fighting. Beyond that though..... not much. God help this card if something happens to cause the cancellation of the main event. Do not even think about buying this PPV until Saturday morning at the earliest, after everyone has made weight and you have checked for any breaking UFC news.

I won't even buy this one on Saturday. Aldo is past it, the girls are just lambs being led to slaughter and Vitor has zero appeal for me.

Everyone made weight, so barring any medical issues today, the (very weak and top-heavy) card tomorrow is still intact.

And now the other extreme, early bad stop in the Silva Medeiros fight.

If I have to have a bad ref decision, I'd rather see a fast stop than a Mario bloodbath special, but that was early.

alnorth 06-03-2017 08:55 PM

Perfect stop by McCarthy. I'm glad we have a real ref for the main event.

jd1020 06-03-2017 10:29 PM

Not sure what Aldo has to complain about. McCarthy gave him every chance to not sit there and eat shots to the face.

Welp, the last 3 fighters I was cheering for all lost, but they were all good fights, so its fine.

Yep, McCarthy gave him the exact championship bout leeway to fight out of it. I was screaming at Aldo to do something, and right before the fight was over, I just slumped in disappointment knowing that John was surely about to end it.

Aldo leg kicks - 0

It was like the McGregor fight all over again, only it lasted longer than 13 seconds. After he got knocked out by McGregor all you heard was how he did exactly the opposite of everything they trained for. All during the Holloway fight all they talked about was that Aldo said he wanted to use his leg kicks in this fight, and he didn't throw a single one.

I really don't get it, those leg kicks were very important to his long run as champion. He left behind a long trail of defeated opponents all lamenting how his devastating leg kicks crippled their mobility, and then he suddenly decided he didn't need them anymore.

On a lighter note, I found this hilarious reply on another board to someone who was complaining that Conor would likely never cut to 145 to fight Holloway.

Quote:

Hmm lets see. I'm conor mcgregor and whats my options:

1. Fight LeBron James in a 1v1 street ball style contest on 70 dollar PPV
2. Fight nobody in a "special multimedia event" featuring U2 and the sports illustrated swimsuit models on 70 dollar PPV
3. Fight GSP in a bizarre superfight after both Conor and GSP hold out for a bigger take, and get it
4. Cocaine
...

1003. Straight up commit suicide
1004. Cut down to 145 to fight Max "#Blessed" Holloway, an alleged UFC fighter.

I honestly believe every word DJ wrote. Frankly, Dana has literally made billions by stepping on the guys who make 10k per fight. He would never treat Jones the way he treats DJ. Dana is a bully and a shit and I'd love to see WMG put him out.

alnorth 06-06-2017 03:34 PM

Recap for those who want a summary:

UFC: "Your next fight is against Ray Borg"

DJ: "really? Sergio Pettis is more marketable, can I fight him?"

UFC: "Nope, you are fighting Borg"

DJ: "Well ok, but Cody Garbrandt is talking about coming down to 125 and challenging me, I think that would be a pretty sweet fight you could sell"

UFC: "We can't sell that shit"

DJ: "OK jeez. I'll take the fight, but in exchange for that, could you start giving me PPV points in future fights after I break the record?"

UFC: "Sounds fair"

UFC (overruled by Dana): "Never mind, no PPV points in the future either"

DJ: "Why?"

UFC: "Small fighters can't sell, and we don't think we can market you"

(Cody gets hurt)

UFC: "Shit, OK new plan, you are fighting TJ, we think we can sell that fight and maybe you can earn PPV points"

DJ: "You can't sell me and Cody in a champion vs champion fight, but you can sell TJ? Bullshit"

UFC: "you are fighting TJ, forget about Borg, and if you refuse this fight we're getting rid of your whole division. This is a good opportunity for TJ, you'd be hurting him if you don't take this fight."

DJ: (what about my opportunities?)

DJ: "There is no way in hell TJ can make weight. He should have to prove he can make the weight, I'm not going to go through camp and have the record-breaking title fight called off when he misses weight."

UFC: "Don't worry about weight, we guarantee he'll make weight."

DJ: "Oh if its a guarantee, then fine. If he misses weight, you'll legally agree to pay me even if the fight is off, right?"

UFC: "No. And if TJ misses weight, you'll fight Borg."

DJ: "Really? I have to prepare in camp to fight two different possible guys now? Is this an amateur tournament or a UFC championship fight?"

(Dana starts calling out DJ in the media)

Megan Anderson is the invicta featherweight champ, and she's a 6-footer so she's big enough to be a legit FW who has trouble cutting to 135. She won her last 4 fights by KO, finished her last 6 wins, and never fought Cyborg, so it could be the only potential opponent for Cyborg who might be interesting. If they don't strip de Randamie, then I assume this would be for an interim championship.

MMA schedule this week:

Friday

nothing

Saturday

11:30 am - (Fightpass) - Glory 42

Kickboxing in Europe. Eh, kickboxing is always cool.

7pm TV - (6pm Fightpass/7pm FS1) - UFC Fight Night Lewis vs. Hunt

I can only interpret this main event as Dana White dishing out punishment to Mark Hunt for publicly trashing him, making it clear he's fighting out his contract to leave, and suing the UFC. The Black Beast has been sent out to murder Hunt in front of his home crowd in a card thats.... pretty good, actually. The prelims are kinda weak and filled with guys trying to stay in the UFC, but I like that main card.

Anyway, you should enjoy this one because next week is really gonna suck.

BigCatDaddy 06-08-2017 09:03 AM

Wasn't it Sakuraba that Rampage tried to throw over the top rope in one of this first fights?

alnorth 06-09-2017 10:06 AM

Weigh-ins are done. Everyone made weight except one of the strawweights on the fightpass prelim. Hunt and Lewis both maxed the scale at 265, so those 2 heavyweights apparently had to cut weight.

mdstu 06-10-2017 10:58 PM

The Mayweather vs McGregor freakshow looks like it will be announced soon. Mayweather Promotions has reserved the MGM Grand on August 26th for "a Boxing Event".

alnorth 06-14-2017 08:29 AM

Are you ready to stay up all night Friday and into the early morning Saturday to watch Holly Holm fight Bethe Correia? Yeah, me neither. This weekend sucks for MMA because everyone got the hell out of the way when the PPV for Ward vs. Kovalev 2 was announced. Even I'm a bit curious about that fight, and I don't like boxing.

Friday

5pm - (Fightpass) - TKO 39

Canadian promotion. Judging from Tapology rankings, this looks to be about dead average by local promotion standards.

In the Middle of the Damned Night

3:45am - (Fightpass) - UFC Fight Night Holm vs Correia

The main event is terrible. I do not give a damn about either fighter and neither should be anywhere close to a title shot with a win.

I'm just going to pretend the main event doesn't exist. When I do that, the rest of the card isn't too terrible, but the main card starts at 7am, and I'm not waking up for that.

UFC's fightpass now has a 24/7 stream option. Basically, when nothing else is going on it'll show pre-programmed fights and content. When a live event comes on, it'll switch over to that. So, its basically like an online UFC channel. The fight library is still there if you want to bring up a specific fight.

Ex-UFC champ Matt Hughes airlifted after truck collides with train

Quote:

UFC legend Matt Hughes was injured in a truck accident Friday, UFC president Dana White told ESPN.com.

White said Hughes was airlifted to a hospital after a truck he was in collided with a moving train in Illinois. White said he has spoken to Hughes’ family and they are heading to the medical facility where Hughes was taken.

"Apparently he has head trauma," White said. "His family is traveling to him now."

TMZ reported that law enforcement sources said one person was taken from the crash with serious injuries, and White confirmed Hughes was that person.

The UFC tweeted a graphic, signifying Hughes is in its thoughts Friday.

According to the internet, the main event for this morning's crappy card included a very rare warning for timidity, because Holm kept backing up, doing nothing, and waiting to counterstrike.

Apparently Holm got a head kick KO in the 3rd round right after Correia taunted her, but eh, I'm not going to bother watching the fight. I'll wait for the inevitable gif.

They did go on to say "unless ratings or other financial motives of the UFC dictate otherwise then those factors take precedence". I mean, we all knew that already (see: McGregor, Conor), but they flat-out stated it.

GdR is not even remotely a draw and there is no conceivable superfight for her. Its weird that she's a champion at all. So if she won't fight the #1 contender then yeah, she's gonna be stripped.

That whole division was DOA the moment it was announced. There literally like 3 women in the entire world big enough to compete legitimately at 145 besides smaller girls putting on 10 lbs and competing against Cyborg who would outweigh them by 30 lbs on fight night. Megan Anderson is legit though but that's the end of it.

According to his family he has no broken bones or major internal injuries. But he's still on a ventilator and in a coma so I'm not sure what that means.

This weekend should be interesting. Bellator takes a shot at PPV with some of the best fighters on their roster in Madison Square Garden.

Friday

nothing

Saturday

3pm - (Fightpass) - Cage Warriors 85

Judging by Tapology rankings, this is average quality by local promotion standards

7pm TV - (5pm internet/7pm Spike/9pm PPV) - Bellator 180 Chael Sonnen vs Wanderlei Silva

For the 2nd time in the promotion's history, Bellator will attempt to sell a main card on PPV. The card is fantastic by Bellator standards, and would be pretty good by UFC free TV standards, but is it worth paying for? Well, they priced it $10 less than UFC, so maybe.

Sunday

6pm TV - (4:30pm Fightpass/6pm FS2/8pm FS1) - UFC Fight Night Chiesa vs Lee

After Bellator announced their big MSG event, the UFC decided to step slightly out of the way with a Sunday card. I'm only now taking a look at it, and this is a great card for free TV. Its only a title fight short of being PPV quality.

There won't be much next weekend, but after that the UFC will have events for at least 5 weekends in a row.

I'm slightly interested in Mitrione vs Fedor, but I'm not paying for that card. Absolutely zero interest in Silva vs Sonnen.

Bellator is awful, I'll watch it with no sound because I love watching fights but I hate Jimmy Smith.

Pride was better

Wanderlei is my all time favorite fighter. I fell in love when I watched him fight Kazuyuki Fujita. It was the first time I've ever seen Wanderlei fight, Fujita has a thicker skull than the average human, but Wandy gave no ****s and kept kicking the shit out of him.

Fedor is a monster and I had the privilege to watched him fight Mark Coleman in Las Vegas. He's was literally unstoppable in Pride.

alnorth 06-23-2017 03:58 PM

Cortney Casey's "B" sample came back clean, but she is still suspended because Texas is stupid.

Wandy vs Mark Hunt was a great fight too.

The reactions from Bas Rutten and Randy Couture on commentary make that move even better.

alnorth 06-24-2017 05:40 PM

This is starting to get really pathetic. Johny Hendricks missed weight again..... at freaking middleweight. 188, so missed by 2 full pounds.

That was absolutely hilarious.

This wasn't fair for the kid, he should have been fighting another guy making his debut or someone with fewer than 5 fights in a B-league.

This is why B-leagues exist, to introduce hot prospects slowly and get them going. Throwing this kid at a veteran was incredibly stupid. At least the UFC waited for Sage to win a few fights before signing him.

Not only that but to hype him in the fashion they did was ridiculous...Schaub was saying earlier he could beat any top 10 guy in the world earlier.
