They're 2 games out of a playoff spot in a race full of teams that have huge gaping weaknesses. One of these teams is going to have a hot September and win it. At this point it's just as likely to be Tampa as anyone else, and they were dead a month ago.
I don't think the Royals are the favorites, but I think the whole thing is up in the air. Any of those top 6 or 7 teams have a legitimate shot. And that's not even considering the PR hit that I'm guessing Glass won't want to take. Quitting when you're 2 games back would be an all time fail. |

So no, they're not in it. |

If the Royals can survive their brutal west coast run with around a .500 record, then I might start to hope for the best. Maybe.

How significant is it that Sal signed with a new agent? Does he want more money or something?

If they go into this upcoming stretch against the A's and Giants and get clobbered, it'll drop off the table. They fluctuate way too much for my taste. Look at the Blue Jays on that table... they lost yesterday, so their playoff odds dropped almost 6% in one day? For real? The Mariners have lost 4 games in a row, so their odds have dropped 20% this week? I almost wonder if that's the case of people getting so caught up in numbers that someone makes up some statistic, and people take it as gospel. |

I agree with the concept that anything "can" happen, but I also think it's imperative that a GM attempt to be as honest as possible in trying to assess what's most likely to happen.
With the Royals, it's such a flawed offensive team that I have a hard time envisioning them making the playoffs. However, I think you can potentially buy and sell to keep in the race this year and improve for next. Example: Ian Kennedy. What's his price? Not FA eligible until 2016. Plus the above example for a Taveras (which, admittedly, might be complete fantasy...). Totally throwing shit against the wall, but I think the Royals cannot responsibly do nothing. |
Either way if we want a chance this season we have to add some power and I'd like a starting pitcher.

Sal can't hold out anyway

On MLB network just now, Eduardo Perez listed the Royals as his top buyer. Braden said Orioles. Amazingly we're only 2 out with 60 to go.

If you look at the wildcard standings, the Yankees currently lead the pack for the second wildcard and are on pace for 86 wins. To get to that mark, the Royals would need to go 34-26 in their final 60 games. That's a much more sutainable pace (.568) than what we were looking at the other day when I was talking about what it would take to get to 90 wins. According to Baseball Prospectus, the Royals' odds have climbed 10 percent in just four days. Win a couple more in a row, and that's going to continue to trend that way. |
Apparently the Royals have followed Johnny Gomes all week. They want him

Dingleberry is spot on, adding depth to our starting pitching absolutely cannot hurt.

Detroit has played 2 games less than us... and we are 6 games back from them currently. I put a voodoo hex on them to lose those two games whenever they are played. So, we good.

Hey Duncan:
You know anything about this Latin Dude? Right hander. I think his name is Romero, pitches in the California Penal League? He might have some deceptive stuff, they say he's a real cut up in the locker room. |
Not that it makes any difference, but these are the same Cleveland Indians that won 3 out of 4 from the Tigers last weekend.

After six, Angels lead the Tigers 3 - 0.

During the Royals five game win streak, Hosmer has had two at bats and went 0 - 2. Billy's bat seems to work better when he gets to play 1st.
|
So I think our trade wish list goes
1 Byrd 2 Rios But about Josh Willingham as a 3rd option? Avg sucks but 350 OBP and 420 slug. I'm not sure how well he would be in RF, but I would be he'd be much cheaper in prospects than the other two guys. |

@JoshVernier610: Pinch-hit last night. Billy was 1-for-10 as starting 1B prior. RT @mdbbiggs seems to be hitting better since playing the field. Coincidence? |

The scout board is saying there was a Phillies scout at the game today. The speculation is that they're targeting Kelvin.

Byrd is obviously the target.
Although, and I'll be shot for this... but if they are truly willing to eat Ryan Howard's monster contract like the reports claim, I'd be curious to see what it'd take to get him. He's not the guy he was 5 years ago but he still has 25 HR power, and he's a Missouri native. He seems like the type of veteran Billy Beane would buy low on and rejuvenate into a productive DH. |

Phillies would have to eat almost all of the contact, though. All but maybe $10 million (total). |

I'd trade Kelvin for Byrd 15 times out of 10
|
I don't know why we would want Howard. He doesn't really improve our lineup. Byrd should be the guy we target.
|
Not sure I want to trade Hererra for Byrd, but they may need to if they can keep this going steady till next thursday. Need another bat and he may be the best one out there esp in OF
|
If teams covet Herrera I would trade him for anything.
The Royals have the best bullpen in baseball by a mile. We need Herrera about as much as I needed chlamydia three times. |
Byrd is controlled for next year, too, and owed only $8M.
****, we might see Balboni's record threatened. |
I wonder what Milton Bradley is up to
|
I think the bigger sticking point with Byrd - at least for KC - is probably that he wants that 2016 option turned into a guaranteed year rather than a team option to waive his no-trade to KC.
But I'd make the trade. Hell, I've been beating that drum for 6 weeks. Where on the scout board is Philadelphia scouting Herrera being discussed? I looked through the likely threads and didn't see it. |
What's y'all's take on Matt Kemp? Is he a change of scenery candidate or legitimately a one-hit wonder who's done?
You know the Dodgers won't mind eating significant money here. |
if the Dodgers are gonna eat that contract it's going to take quite the prospect package for Kemp IMO
|
the fact that NFL teams scouted Kaepernick and Tebow and one dipshit team decided taking Tebow over Kaepernick was a good idea pretty much cracks me up
|
If a team is willing to trade a power bat for a reliever, you make that trade every time. If it's on the table, Moore needs to do that and now.
|
I could very well be wrong, but I don't think the price for Kemp is going to be incredibly high. In fact, that's a team whom I could see coveting a Herrera to make a WS run. It's Kemp's contract that will be the primary hurdle.
|
Quote:
If they don't pick up Butler's option he could be the DH next year. Really the only reason I'd entertain the idea is they seem really desperate to dump him, and eat the contract while doing it. It's the type of thing the A's do... pick up guys late in their career cheap and get a good year or two out of them. Like they did with Frank Thomas. Of course if Butler's actually about to start getting hot it'd be a waste of time. |
Don't get me wrong, Marlon Byrd would be a very nice addition to this lineup. But if, as Deez suggests and I agree (why I raised it), Kemp could be had for a decent price, you could COULD be landing someone with superstar potential who needs a change of scenery from a place that has become toxic and is one outfielder too many.
He's a midwestern guy, right? I wouldn't mind seeing him in CF for us if the Dodgers would eat significant salary. |
Have the Royals had scouts at Dodger games? We at least know for sure that Byrd is on the Royals radar. Also, that's a great point Deez/CaliforniaChief.
|
Quote:
|
Would they eat half? If so, I would see that as an incredible opportunity for the Royals.
|
The Dodgers would have to eat at least half of what left on Kemp's contract, but if they'd do that, it's worth talking about.
Prospect price might not make sense at that point for the royals, not sure how high it would be. |
