They're 2 games out of a playoff spot in a race full of teams that have huge gaping weaknesses. One of these teams is going to have a hot September and win it. At this point it's just as likely to be Tampa as anyone else, and they were dead a month ago.

I don't think the Royals are the favorites, but I think the whole thing is up in the air. Any of those top 6 or 7 teams have a legitimate shot.

And that's not even considering the PR hit that I'm guessing Glass won't want to take. Quitting when you're 2 games back would be an all time fail.

The team that currently has the 2nd wild card is the Yankees. They Yankees have multiple series against the O's which are currently in first place. They also have multiple series against the Jays which were in first until a couple weeks ago. And, they play multiple series against the Rays who have won 8 in a row. To add to that, the Yankees also play 7 games against the Tigers in August. The Royals will either gain on the Yankees or the Tigers.

One game behind the Yankees for the 2nd wild card are the Jays and 1.5 games is Seattle. The blue jays play multiple series against the Yankees, O's, and Rays.
Seattle has multiple games against the A's (which has the best record in baseball) and the Angles (who have the 2nd best record in baseball).

So, based on the math, the Royals are still very much in it.

The Royals have to be capable of scoring more than three runs in as many days. Which they're not.

So no, they're not in it.

If they go into this upcoming stretch against the A's and Giants and get clobbered, it'll drop off the table. They fluctuate way too much for my taste.

Look at the Blue Jays on that table... they lost yesterday, so their playoff odds dropped almost 6% in one day? For real? The Mariners have lost 4 games in a row, so their odds have dropped 20% this week?

I almost wonder if that's the case of people getting so caught up in numbers that someone makes up some statistic, and people take it as gospel.

Release Butler and pay sal easy fix

DeezNutz 07-26-2014 01:17 PM

I agree with the concept that anything "can" happen, but I also think it's imperative that a GM attempt to be as honest as possible in trying to assess what's most likely to happen.

With the Royals, it's such a flawed offensive team that I have a hard time envisioning them making the playoffs.

However, I think you can potentially buy and sell to keep in the race this year and improve for next. Example: Ian Kennedy. What's his price? Not FA eligible until 2016.

Plus the above example for a Taveras (which, admittedly, might be complete fantasy...).

Totally throwing shit against the wall, but I think the Royals cannot responsibly do nothing.

TambaBerry 07-26-2014 01:21 PM

Either way if we want a chance this season we have to add some power and I'd like a starting pitcher.

Release Butler, use excess money to buy a Right Fielder. Don't pay Sal anymore. Sal is a player you absolutely do not want to pay. Because when his current contract runs out, he's likely going to be Joe Mauered, and will need to play DH or 1B. He's just too big, too tall, to be able to catch for the length of his career in just about any scenario you can envision. Then you can let him walk instead of overpaying. We aren't the Yankees or the Red Sox, that is what we have to do.

I hear ya on the "flawed offensive" part. I get so irritated with the number of base runners they leave stranded. But then last night, Butler gets the clutch HR and Ibanez (who's batting .167) hits that triple that scores Gordon. It's a freaking roller coaster.

Highly, highly unlikely. They are hesitant to include him for Price, who is better and controlled one year longer.

If you look at the wildcard standings, the Yankees currently lead the pack for the second wildcard and are on pace for 86 wins. To get to that mark, the Royals would need to go 34-26 in their final 60 games. That's a much more sutainable pace (.568) than what we were looking at the other day when I was talking about what it would take to get to 90 wins.

According to Baseball Prospectus, the Royals' odds have climbed 10 percent in just four days. Win a couple more in a row, and that's going to continue to trend that way.

August could be a real roller coaster month. They play 10 of 13 against the A's and Giants, which will be brutal. Then they follow that up by playing the Twins, Rangers and Rockies, all currently last place teams.

The tribe did nothing really special to beat the Tigers in those games. They just took advantage of the bad tigers bullpen what you have seen this series is who the Indians are and there Front office still thinks this team can contend

DeepSouth 07-26-2014 09:00 PM

After six, Angels lead the Tigers 3 - 0.

DeepSouth 07-26-2014 09:26 PM

During the Royals five game win streak, Hosmer has had two at bats and went 0 - 2. Billy's bat seems to work better when he gets to play 1st.

BigCatDaddy 07-26-2014 09:30 PM

So I think our trade wish list goes

1 Byrd
2 Rios

But about Josh Willingham as a 3rd option? Avg sucks but 350 OBP and 420 slug.

I'm not sure how well he would be in RF, but I would be he'd be much cheaper in prospects than the other two guys.

Although, and I'll be shot for this... but if they are truly willing to eat Ryan Howard's monster contract like the reports claim, I'd be curious to see what it'd take to get him. He's not the guy he was 5 years ago but he still has 25 HR power, and he's a Missouri native. He seems like the type of veteran Billy Beane would buy low on and rejuvenate into a productive DH.

Howard's son lives in the KC area... I'd think he would be amenable to a move to KC between that and being from MO.

Phillies would have to eat almost all of the contact, though. All but maybe $10 million (total).

I'd trade Kelvin for Byrd 15 times out of 10

Unsmooth-Moment 07-27-2014 09:35 AM

I don't know why we would want Howard. He doesn't really improve our lineup. Byrd should be the guy we target.

Sure-Oz 07-27-2014 09:45 AM

Not sure I want to trade Hererra for Byrd, but they may need to if they can keep this going steady till next thursday. Need another bat and he may be the best one out there esp in OF

Hootie 07-27-2014 09:48 AM

If teams covet Herrera I would trade him for anything.

The Royals have the best bullpen in baseball by a mile. We need Herrera about as much as I needed chlamydia three times.

DeezNutz 07-27-2014 09:49 AM

Byrd is controlled for next year, too, and owed only $8M.

****, we might see Balboni's record threatened.

Hootie 07-27-2014 09:55 AM

I wonder what Milton Bradley is up to

duncan_idaho 07-27-2014 09:58 AM

I think the bigger sticking point with Byrd - at least for KC - is probably that he wants that 2016 option turned into a guaranteed year rather than a team option to waive his no-trade to KC.

But I'd make the trade. Hell, I've been beating that drum for 6 weeks.

Where on the scout board is Philadelphia scouting Herrera being discussed? I looked through the likely threads and didn't see it.

CaliforniaChief 07-27-2014 10:23 AM

What's y'all's take on Matt Kemp? Is he a change of scenery candidate or legitimately a one-hit wonder who's done?

You know the Dodgers won't mind eating significant money here.

Hootie 07-27-2014 10:25 AM

if the Dodgers are gonna eat that contract it's going to take quite the prospect package for Kemp IMO

Hootie 07-27-2014 10:26 AM

the fact that NFL teams scouted Kaepernick and Tebow and one dipshit team decided taking Tebow over Kaepernick was a good idea pretty much cracks me up

Three7s 07-27-2014 10:33 AM

If a team is willing to trade a power bat for a reliever, you make that trade every time. If it's on the table, Moore needs to do that and now.

DeezNutz 07-27-2014 10:34 AM

I could very well be wrong, but I don't think the price for Kemp is going to be incredibly high. In fact, that's a team whom I could see coveting a Herrera to make a WS run. It's Kemp's contract that will be the primary hurdle.

Even while having a terrible year, he has more HR and RBI than anyone in the Royals lineup. Obviously so does Byrd.

If they don't pick up Butler's option he could be the DH next year. Really the only reason I'd entertain the idea is they seem really desperate to dump him, and eat the contract while doing it. It's the type of thing the A's do... pick up guys late in their career cheap and get a good year or two out of them. Like they did with Frank Thomas. Of course if Butler's actually about to start getting hot it'd be a waste of time.

CaliforniaChief 07-27-2014 10:53 AM

Don't get me wrong, Marlon Byrd would be a very nice addition to this lineup. But if, as Deez suggests and I agree (why I raised it), Kemp could be had for a decent price, you could COULD be landing someone with superstar potential who needs a change of scenery from a place that has become toxic and is one outfielder too many.

He's a midwestern guy, right? I wouldn't mind seeing him in CF for us if the Dodgers would eat significant salary.

C3HIEF3S 07-27-2014 11:15 AM

Have the Royals had scouts at Dodger games? We at least know for sure that Byrd is on the Royals radar. Also, that's a great point Deez/CaliforniaChief.

He's a midwestern guy, right? I wouldn't mind seeing him in CF for us if the Dodgers would eat significant salary.

He's played plenty of games in RF too. I'd be all for that. The problem is he's signed through 2019 at 20+ million a year. The Dodgers love to spend money but I'm not sure if they'd eat all of that.

Would they eat half? If so, I would see that as an incredible opportunity for the Royals.

The Dodgers would have to eat at least half of what left on Kemp's contract, but if they'd do that, it's worth talking about.

Prospect price might not make sense at that point for the royals, not sure how high it would be.

Why do you say "at least" half? He's owed (basically) 21.5 per through the rest of his deal (2019). Royals can easily handle around 11 per for Kemp, especially with Butler coming off the books next year.

What kind of prospect we likely to lose for that price?

I have no idea. I'm probably completely wrong because I think the Dodgers want to get rid of his ass to open up a spot for Pederson.

Mid-level prospect or two + Herrera + some contract relief? No?
