We're probably going to see more draws with the new scoring rules. Picture a close fight where in rounds 1 and 2 the guy in the red corner wins the round, but in round 3 the fighter in the blue corner gets a couple knockdowns, takes the back, and the fighter in red barely survives to the bell. Currently that is usually a 29-28 because you have to damn near kill your opponent to get the 10-8, but in 2017 that could easily be 28-28. Rounds that are currently scored 10-8 where the fight probably could have been stopped may now sometimes be scored 10-7 in 2017.

alnorth 12-21-2016 02:24 PM

The UFC offered Khabib Nurmagomedov, who has been screaming for a title shot for quite a while, an interim LW championship fight in March against Jose Aldo. Khabib turned it down, then said stupid shit about how he doesn't fight smaller guys and he'd rather fight Tony Ferguson, etc.

Yeah, it might be a tough matchup with Aldo's takedown defense, but he turned down a golden ticket to fight Conor McGregor. Khabib is not a smart man.

Wow, I don't get that. He has to know that Conor doesn't want to fight him now. He kinda blew it.

Oh, nice. FOX is going to air UFC 206 primetime on Christmas eve. Most people skipped this PPV because it looked weak, and missed an incredible FOTY candidate on the Swanson Choi fight.

If you skipped 206, you should watch this on FOX JUST to see Cub fight the Korean Superboy if for no other reason. Well, the Cowboy fight was cool, too.

She was just quoted as saying no one respects her as a world champ. She follows that up by turning down a championship fight with Holm at 145 and no she pisses hot.

First time my brother and I saw her together he said "I know Wanderlei is tough but he needs to stop dressing in drag and go back to fighting men"

alnorth 12-22-2016 02:38 PM

Cyborg's camp is claiming that it was not for steroids, it was some kind of medication prescribed to help recover from her weight cut. Her doctor is in touch with USADA.

So, it sounds like they are trying to retroactively get a TUE for whatever she popped for. That is possible, but it is stupid to not clear it with USADA beforehand because if USADA looks at her case and goes "hmmmm, no we would not have approved that TUE" then she just flat-out failed and gets the full punishment for whatever she took, which would be either 1 or 2 years depending on what it is.

edit: Rumor is she popped for a diuretic. If that is true, she is likely screwed, I don't know how you can justify a TUE for a diuretic.

edit2: Its reportedly spironolactone. She's ****ed, she may get the full 2 year hammer for that.

jd1020 12-22-2016 05:02 PM

Probably got the same batch of boner pills Jones did.

alnorth 12-22-2016 05:44 PM

Dana White had a funny reaction.

"First of all, I was offering her these fights at 145 pounds. First fight she had eight weeks to get ready. Second fight she had 11 weeks to get ready and the third fight she just turned down. I thought it was just strange that she was turning down all these fights ... not so strange now. It’s weird how these things play out, and that I ended up making this Holly, Germain fight at 45, which is perfect now."

Jerm 12-22-2016 09:34 PM

apparently a 1st-time positive test for diuretics has a maximum punishment of only 1 year, not 2.

According to people who know way more about steroids than me though, this particular diuretic is often used by women who cycle off of steroids.

Demonpenz 12-23-2016 02:14 AM

So over cyborg and most of the woman. Like Van Zant and rousey though. Tate was cute but weak,

alnorth 12-23-2016 12:21 PM

According to several doctors on the internet, Cyborg's medical explanation is horseshit. She was roided beyond the gills and is now lying her ass off.

Now that MMA is legal in NY, the UFC should probably just avoid New Jersey until they follow the unified rules.

Retire or find a new coach, before she puts action to her thoughts and offs herself.

Pants 12-30-2016 11:58 PM

I don't understand. Edmond seems like smart dude and is a boxing coach. How is Ronda so bad on her feet?

I honestly feel bad for her. You know she worked her ass off for this come back and had to fight so many demons after Holly knocked her out.

Welp, at least Cody didn't disappoint. Can't for him to fight TJ.

Lonewolf Ed 12-30-2016 11:59 PM

That was just sad. Ronda looked lost out there and ate all those punches. She is definitely NOT a boxer, so why the hell did she try to box her opponent whose strength is in striking? She learned nothing from her loss to Holm, obviously. She looked so bad out there, like she was just a sparring dummy. It was like she never saw any of the punches coming in at her. At the end, I bet she didn't see much of anything but spots in the air. Sad, just sad.

Urc Burry 12-31-2016 12:06 AM

Thank, God...a one trick pony who took advantage of the fact there was no competition in her division.

When the UFC starts to allow double transgenders to fight other double transgenders, I'm sure there will be some Female to Male to Female chick that's roughly attractive and marketable and wins 60 in a row because there are literally less than 60 double transgenders in the world.

eDave 12-31-2016 02:09 AM

That ass beating made no sense at all. WTH was she thinking standing in like that? I was cringing and felt bad for her. Yeesh.

The only thing she dodged tonight was the post fight press conference (I stole that one).

She might kill herself.

OldSchool 12-31-2016 02:47 AM

Ronda sucks. She moves like a grandma. No bend to her knees, stiff legged, poor weight distribution, just shit weight transferring which results in zero power behind her punches. Hands that were slow as shit and a head that was ripe for a beating.

RIP Rousey's career. Hope she doesn't actually off herself this time.

Mecca 12-31-2016 05:37 AM

Don't worry Rousey pretty much has a standing WWE offer so I'm sure that's her future now.

CoMoChief 12-31-2016 06:05 AM

She was told she was the most invincible woman on the planet. How could you not see that. Mentally she's unstable. She trained well...man did she look good. But you have to have the right mind set and Nunes was able to get into her head. Rousey knew Nunes was gonna come out swinging like a Tasmanian devil and that's what happened. Rousey couldn't handle it, she knew it, Nunes knew it, everyone knew it. Her striking game is absolute trash.

She doesn't know how to take a loss. ****ing whiney crybaby. She was defeated before she stepped foot in the cage. She knew she didn't stand a chance standing/trading w/ Nunes. No ****ing way.

She's done being relevant in MMA. She won't be champion again as long as Holly and Nunes are in her division.

I personally think she should do porn. But more than likely it will be WWE.

Most elite fighters of whatever sort can work around having a faulty trainer...just as long as they have the sparring partners to push them.

Ronda Rousey just sucks, man... with women MMA becoming bigger/more mainstream....and it being a way for hot-headed tough chicks to make some money, we are going to see HUNDREDS of women who are better than Rousey, probably just in the next decade.

RDA has announced that the weight cut to 155 has become difficult for him, and he wants to move up to WW.

Here's this weekend's MMA schedule

Friday through Sunday

Not a God damn thing.

There are little local promotions in CT and St. Charles MO and something in the Philippines. Thats it for the entire world, no one wants to compete with NFL wild card weekend. Even next weekend, the UFC is waiting till Sunday night after the last playoff game for their show.

alnorth 01-06-2017 05:33 PM

Because he's been kinda crazy lately, Mark Hunt decided to file a lawsuit in Nevada against the UFC, Dana White, and Brock Lesnar, for either knowingly or being willfully reckless in allowing him to fight Lesnar while juiced. The amount he's asking for is unknown, but his lawyer said its in the millions.

It will likely be quickly dismissed.

alnorth 01-13-2017 02:30 PM

This weekend's schedule:

Friday

5pm - (Fightpass) - TKO 37. Minor promotion in Canada, never heard of anyone on the card. This card is enormous, with a whopping 19 matches, so I guess it'll go all night. So if you want to see some fights tonight, well here's some fights of unknown quality.

Saturday

7pm - (Fightpass) - Invicta FC 21. Its Invicta, you know what you are getting. Probably a lot of bad fights, but there are a few prospects who will likely make it to the UFC, given how shallow the women's divisions are. Of course, if the Patriot-Texans playoff game ends up being competitive, no one will see this event outside their families, the refs, and the judges. If the Patriots are blowing out the Texans, eh maybe I'll tune in.

Sunday

5:15 pm - (Fightpass/7pm FS1) - UFC Fight Night, Yair Rodriguez vs BJ Penn. The prelims begin right about when the FOX playoff game should be over, which is obviously not a coincidence. The FOX announcers for Dallas vs Green Bay will probably be instructing their viewers to switch over to FS1 at the end of the game over and over again through all 4 quarters. I'd say the card is roughly average for TV, with an interesting main event. Most of us obviously won't watch the prelims, but the last 2 or 3 fights will be after the Chief game.

alnorth 01-13-2017 09:36 PM

woah, never saw that before. Main event of the Canada card, fighter drops his opponent, probably out when he hit the ground, goes down to start hitting him, all fine so far. The ref quickly decides to stop the fight, grabs him, and the fighter ignores him. 5 or 6 more punches to the head, finally the ref grabs his neck and hauls him back.

Ref goes to talk to people outside the cage, probably asking the commission what his options are, then promptly comes back in and DQ's the guy who got the knockout for unsportsmanlike conduct. If that ever happened in the UFC, Dana would cut the fighter immediately.

alnorth 01-19-2017 08:37 PM

This weekend, no UFC but pretty full:

Thursday

9pm - (Fightpass) - Combate Americas

Friday

9:30 pm - (Fightpass) Glory 37 Superfight Series (kickboxing)

Saturday

6pm - (Fightpass) Titan FC 43
8pm - (Spike) - Bellator 170, Chael Sonnen vs. Tito Ortiz
