It's a pretty common trend for people who don't often go to urban areas to vastly exaggerate safety issues in urban areas. The news does a horrible job of conveying the frequency of issues.

Based on what a lot of people here say, downtown Denver is a drug infested wasteland. Do homeless people and drug use exist? Sure. Have I ever felt unsafe? Nah.

The only time I've had my car broken into was when I was just parked in the 'burbs.
