Report: Chiefs Offer Pioli GM Job

For what it's worth:

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2009/1...fs-offer-pioli

610 Sports is reporting that the Kansas City Chiefs have offered Scott Pioli the job of general manager. Sources to 610 Sports say the two sticking points include money and control over football operations, specifically the coaching staff.

Money

It's unclear how far off the two parties are at this point. We don't know Clark Hunt's offer and we don't know Pioli's demands. But, if turning this team around is as important to Hunt as he's indicated, and if Pioli is the GM everyone hopes/expects him to be, then this shouldn't be a deal breaker.

We do know that Pioli was offered a 5 year, $15 million deal by the Seahawks in 2005 despite never interviewing for the job.

Power

According to 610 Sports, Pioli is seeking more control over football operations, specifically more control over the coaching staff. This likely means that he wants Herm Edwards gone if he decides to accept the job. Or he wants the power to make that happen if/when he's hired.

Former Chiefs GM Carl Peterson used to give his head coach control over his own coaching staff. Assuming Pioli does want Herm gone and Clark is fine with that, it's possible that the control over the coaching staff is referring to the freedom Peterson used to give his head coaches.

I can't imagine Clark Hunt will, after looking at the Chiefs the past two seasons, make this a deal breaker either. He's previously said he will ultimately make the decision on Edwards but some reports say he isn't likely to saddle a GM with a coach he doesn't want.

Stick around here for the latest updates to the Chiefs GM search.

I'd believe it more if WPI reported it :)

Seriously though, this sounds promising

So then I click on it again to see nothing new. I don't want to get too far behind so I don't have to read like 12 pages of nothing to get 1-2 pieces of good info.....so I can't stop.

This thread is seriously taking my time away from dumbassery in other threads and I don't appreciate it.

:D

Agree with that. I wake up and read this thread, come home from work and read this thread. Was the GF's bday so we had too go out for dinner. Was reading this thread, while she harrased me too get in shower too go eat. Walked in the door and told her i gotta find out if we Signed Pioli.

So 610 has reported that Clark made an offer to Pioli, and NONE of the major outlets are jumping on it?

This whole thing has been cloaked in secrecy, and now that there is something significant to report, they are sitting on it?

I smell bullshit.

Ah, makes sense. No sense in the majors getting "fooled again."

If there is resolution to this (either hiring or turning us down), one of two things will happen:

1. If someone starts a new thread, I won't merge it with this one.
2. If someone breaks it in this thread, I'll edit the title so that people know.

For what it's worth.

Pioli's 'demands' not an issue, sources say
Posted by Mary Kay Cabot/Plain Dealer Reporter January 07, 2009 21:52PM

Stephan Savoia/Associated Press
Scott Pioli's chat with Browns owner Randy Lerner was more "exploratory" than a negotiation, said sources familiar with the meeting on Wednesday.
Reports that Patriots Vice President of Player Personnel Scott Pioli turned the Browns off with his "outrageous demands" were absolutely false, multiple sources close to the situation told The Plain Dealer Wednesday.

Browns owner Randy Lerner spent about 10 hours talking to Pioli on and off over the past week and the dialogue was positive, the source said. It was also described as one source as more "exploratory" than actual negotiating.

Lerner really liked and admired Pioli, his first choice for a general manager, sources said. But Lerner identified early on in the hiring process that the head coach was the more important hire between the two. Research had shown that landing the right coach was the bigger indicator of a franchise's success.

So when Mangini was fired by the Jets last week, it altered the landscape of the search, and Mangini became the focal point. It didn't help matters that Mangini and Pioli were on opposite sides of the Spygate controversy, in which the Patriots were disciplined for taping the Jets' defensive signals.

Pioli also interviewed with the Kansas City Chiefs, but hasn't made a decision yet on whether or not to leave New England, a source said.

The Browns are still expected to interview Eagles GM Tom Heckert, but their current top candidate for the job is Mangini's close friend George Kokinis, the Ravens' director of pro personnel.

So you expect people to pay over $100 a year for the same thing 610 reports on the radio?

I fully anticipate at least 10 people starting a new thread "breaking it" when it actually happens...
