MU will do what is best for MU just like Texas and OU tried to do.

Kansas is going to get their diggs in because they are rivals. Personally I think it's going to be a huge mistake in the long run.

Ha, throwing red meat to Kansas City.

And trying to keep KU on the schedule.

Directive given to hold an invitational basketball tournament in KC hosted by MU. As well as a football game at Arrowhead with a regional rival.

dirk digler 10-21-2011 11:36 AM

So no news on moving to the SEC = dumb

Fish 10-21-2011 11:37 AM

Bunch of grandstanding... Doesn't look like they're really releasing any info other than "We still love KC, and like playing games here."

Not answering shit about what conference that would be in....

Mr. Plow 10-21-2011 11:37 AM

I can't watch....can someone fill me in?

Saulbadguy 10-21-2011 11:38 AM

BITB is licking his chops.

|Zach| 10-21-2011 11:38 AM

Clearly, Mizzou would not care about having a yearly bball tourney in KC and football game at Arrowhead if they were staying in the Big12.

Pitt Gorilla 10-21-2011 11:38 AM

MU is gone. (I mean, it doesn't take much to read between these lines)

WilliamTheIrish 10-21-2011 11:38 AM

That's a brilliant move by MU.

Put it back on KU. And by extension, the Big 12.

Right. It's not likely that the regional opponent they hope to face off against in Kansas City is Illinois.

Sounds like the speculated timeline is correct, that the vote would be held today, and the formal invitation was predicted to be early next week, IIRC

So they let the "it's up to KU whether the rivalry ends" circulate in the local media for several days, and announce when the formalities are concluded.

WilliamTheIrish 10-21-2011 11:42 AM

They are definitely gone. And they did it really well.

I hope Currie and Schultz are ready to step into the game since KU says they don't want it. Would be awesome.

That would be fun. I doubt Nebraska does that though.

I know this is posturing but if these games were to happen it would be fun.

Bearcat 10-21-2011 11:43 AM

So, they had a press conference to talk about what they want to do if they go to the SEC... after "the deal was done" with another conference?

Seems like the smart thing to do. :spock:

ferrarispider95 10-21-2011 11:45 AM

Blahblahblah. Just say it, we are going to the SEC, we would like to eat our keep and have it to. Unfortunately, KU is not going to play a rivalry game and I don't see any one in the big 12 playing in a Missouri Invitation Basketball Tournament.

Cya. Would be nice if they would just go ahead and announce they are leaving instead of dragging this out, so we can look for a replacement.

Louisville would be an upgrade.

eazyb81 10-21-2011 11:46 AM

They're not announcing they are leaving Big 12 in KC. Good call, emotions too high right now.

It's how I'm reading the thread. It doesn't really matter what the official reason was for the press conference, speculating like that is reeruned from their point of view... let the fans do that. I'm sure they're supremely confident the deal is done, and I'm sure there's a lot we haven't heard about to make the final votes seem like a formality, but instead of grandstanding, they could just wait 5 more days or whatever until it's actually official.

ChiefsCountry 10-21-2011 11:54 AM

Mizzou is good as gone. Board did a pretty good PR job today in KC. Don't announce you are leaving the Big 12 in KC. Announce a basketball tournament and football game for KC. Throw that in KU's court. It would be better to announce you are leaving for the SEC in Columbia.

Gotcha

There aren't bad teams in SEC football. Shit, Kentucky has been to something like 5 or 6 straight bowl games. Vanderbilt is the worst team in the SEC, and they aren't awful.

There is only one basketball school in the Big XII, and that's Kansas. Kentucky basketball trumps Kansas any day (7 national championships compared to 2). Then you've got Florida with 2 recent titles whereas the entire Big XII has 1 in the last 20 years.

Props to MU, the did the right thing.

As a KU fan, I am extremely jealous. SEC is great conference and has a solid future, the Big 12 is still the Titanic leaving port on its maiden voyage...

Basketball doesn't matter. It's secondary.

|Zach| 10-21-2011 12:03 PM

If Deaton's anticipated timeline of moving for the coming year is true that puts the B12 in a bit of a bind.

BYU might be the only Big 12 expansion candidate who could replace Missouri in 2012. BE schools locked in for 27 months.

BYU, Louisville, or WVU.

Sounds like Mizzou doesnt plan to be in the big 12 next year, so we could get back to 10 immediately with BYU.

My preference would be Louisville, but not being about to join for 2 years makes BYU a better choice.

I agree that UK bball trumps KU bball (thanks to a KU grad) in terms of overall success. But I'm just wondering which NCAA championship you're not counting for KU? 1988?

Also, are you saying there were no basketball champions before 1939?

The NCAA tournament was a secondary tournament back then, similar to what the NIT is now. That's not a direct comparison because it had a little more prestige, but it wasn't the national championship.

Who is better in the Big XII? Arkansas has won a NC and played in another in the last 20 years. Kentucky has won 2 since then, played in another, and been in the Final Four 5 times in that span. Florida has won 2 national championships since then.

Who in the Big XII can compete with that? Kansas would be the second best program in the SEC. Who else in the Big XII even holds a candle to Florida?
