UFC Title history updated with title change and new fights

alnorth 03-06-2016 12:49 PM

So, UFC 200 speculation. The UFC has a policy where they do not do 3 title fights in one night (when you go from 1 title fight to 2, that can help sell the PPV and provides insurance, but there's not much difference between 2 and 3, so its usually a waste), but I think they may make an exception here for what they are calling the biggest event in their history.

Out of the weight classes, obviously strawweight is out for sure.

I think we can rule out heavyweight, Bantamweight, and middleweight. I guess if Werdum knocks out Miocic in 20 seconds and doesn't get touched at all he'd be good to go, but they will have already scheduled most of the fights by then, so they'd probably use him for 201. I'm going to go ahead and rule out Miesha Tate as well. She could fight in July, but I think Dana is going to ask her to wait for Ronda.

Light Heavyweight and Flyweight are unlikely unless they have an easy fight and don't mind a quick turnaround.

So, that leaves Conor McGregor, RDA, and Robbie Lawler. I think thats the card. McGregor vs Edgar, RDA against.... Eddie Alvarez? Diaz is possible, unless Dana wants him to prove it. It might be smarter to use Diaz to headline a fight night for a #1 contender fight right after 200. For Lawler, Wonderboy and MacDonald are not available because they are fighting each other in June, so... maybe Tyron Woodley.

There we go, if I'm the matchmaker and the promoter, here's my card, promoted in this order.

Main Event: McGregor vs. Frankie Edgar

Co-Main Event: RDA vs. Eddie Alvarez

3rd title fight: Robbie Lawler vs. Tyron Woodley

If Werdum wins easily and is healthy, I ask him to stay in shape and be ready to save the card if necessary, otherwise I'd use him for 201. The Light Heavyweight champ is also a possible emergency option.

edit: Cowboy Cerrone should be in there somewhere too, either kicking off the PPV, or the feature prelim.

Small thing but Lawler would be in the CME over RDA.

Cerrone/Diaz #1 contender would be a nice addition.

Awesome interview, Diaz was relaxed and a little looser here than he usually is in interviews, probably because a couple of the interviewers were active fighters.

I couldn't be less hyped :(

Pettis/Barboza should be a sick fight tho.

UFC 196 is going to finish with about 1.5 million PPV buys. That would put it right behind UFC 100, but ahead of all other UFC shows.

Shocking news, better sit down for this one. Ready?

Ken Shamrock and Kimbo Slice both failed drug tests. I don't get it, Shamrock looked like a perfectly natural 52-year old man to me, he didn't look obviously juiced to the gills or anything.

alnorth 03-12-2016 10:40 PM

wow. Just watched the lightweight title fight of WSOF 29, and the challenger's knee got messed up pretty bad.

1st round TKO in only about 2 minutes, with leg kicks from the champ messing his knee up so bad 2 guys had to support him while he hobbled out of the cage.

alnorth 03-13-2016 12:46 AM

Any other night owls watching some Pancrase tonight? I've never watched this promotion before.

edit: holy crap, this fight card has 22 fights? What the hell?

edit2: ok, the 22 fights makes more sense now. They don't waste any time, as soon as someone gets KO'd they quickly recognize the winner, get them out, and bring in the next fight. They clearly aren't under any TV timing and scheduling restrictions, though maybe they will be for the last few fights?

Yeah, I'm usually asleep when Pancrase is going on. Either that, or a UFC event was on that weekend so I'm burnt out on MMA after its over, or there was another sporting event, or whatever, etc.

It's been a while since I've watched Pancrase. The older stuff was definitely unique.

Speaking of sleep, we're in the main card now, but I gotta tap out. I just don't care enough about who might be the toughest Japanese fighter to stay up to 5am.

Bellator signed Matt Mitrione. Thats now two Bellator fighters who I'm kinda interested in watching.

Mitrione was a free agent, and decided to sign a 4-fight deal which also included the chance to work for Bellator as a commentator for a new kickboxing promotion that they are going to start. He's 37 yrs old, so even though heavyweights age better, its a good time for him to forget about titles, sign for more money, and go for a chance at a career after fighting.

edit: his new deal guarantees 6 figures per fight

The New York General Assembly has scheduled a vote to legalize MMA next week, and everyone believes it will pass easily. The number of co-sponsors alone is almost a majority.

After the governor signs it (the NY Senate has already passed it), the NYSAC will have 120 days to get everything up and running, so that November event in MSG may actually happen.

If McGregor doesn't at least insist that this fight be his lightweight debut, then he's an idiot.

Looks like the UFC is surrendering the entertainment market to the NCAA and MLB's opening week. Next event is not for another 3 weeks. In the next couple weeks they'll just have lower level MMA fights on fightpass from smaller promotions.

I think he just wants money at this point. 196 was the 2nd-most successful PPV in UFC history, so they can still sell it. Diaz's chin can eat McGregor's shots, and if Conor can't knock out Diaz, he's in a lot of trouble.

If Conor loses again, he'll probably be told to stay in his lane, no more superfight nonsense, and try to make a run at lightweight if he doesn't want to cut to 145 anymore.

For some reason, I've spent 3 hours watching the New York State Assembly debate this bill.

One brought up watching Griffith kill Paret in person, then stated he still loves boxing, but MMA is too much. He then went on to talk about choking being a legitimate technique, finishing with something along the lines of "You know how we in New York feel about chokes," which I could only assume was an Eric Garner reference. Another theorized that pedophiles can open an MMA gym in order to touch children under the guise of training them. Another unwittingly used a parody Edmond Tarverdyan twitter account to make a point.

After this neverending shitshow, it's just now going to a vote.

EDIT: It passed, 113-25.

Watched the video and I disagree. The officer did his job. If Jones hadn't been a dick, not have a laundry list of priors and also not on PROBATION he might not have gotten all five tickets. It is an important lesson especially for a someone like Jon Jones to learn. Mess with the bull and you get the horns. Jones is an embarrassment.
After Chandler's little synthetic pot episode prior to the CHIEFS game I think these brothers have some issues that need to be resolved.
