Wife and I are planning our 10 year for next year by visiting Portland, Maine.

Beautiful area with a shit ton of breweries.

Anyone been to the area and can give recommendations?

Allagash and Definitive are currently set in stone.

Barreled Souls for stouts and barleywine, and of course Bissell Brothers.

High Roller Lobster Club and their lobster roll flights are amazing. Gilbert's Chowder House and Scales are really good, and Gilbert's has chowder flights.

Bramhall is a great speakeasy.

I was only there for a long weekend and would love to spend a few months there one day.

If you can make the 2 hour drive down to Boston, Treehouse and Trillium are totally worth the trip alone.

There's some BA Speedway Stouts hitting the valley

I liked, not loved, Coffee Cake

Also if any of you fellow Phoenicians are going to the Southwest Belgian Fest on Saturday, I'll be pouring at one the stations

I saw one last 6 pack at a Superior Discount Liquor down in Manitowoc today.

I might have to snag it if it's there on Friday.

Has anyone had anything from 903 before?

There stuff is either great, or just disappointing.

Sat near Columbia uni having a great DIPA from Other Half called Juice Collector. Went to an awesome craft beer bar in Harlem for a few beforehand but the walk back to the metro station at night was a bit ropey. I'll tick off going through 'the hood' on my to do list.

Naw. I only have 2 more nights in New York and I still need to tick a few places off like a pastrami on rye from Katz's and pizza from Joe & Pat's. Might try and get in another Chick-fil-A because I ****ing loved it.

Open invitation to anyone around Lee's Summit on Sundays, come up and drink my beers.

Yeah, I know I don't post much anymore, but I wanted to chime in here.

Phisherman is the second CP'er I've had the pleasure of meeting IRL, and he was a solid dude. Very gracious and very knowledgeable on beer. Having the opportunity to share a beer with him and chat a bit made our trip that much better.

KC, in general, is a fantastic city. Every time I visit, I want to stay. During this trip, the wife and I were actually discussing the possibility of retiring to KC eventually.

Oh wow. I was also sat at the bar, near the tills from 4pm until 6.30. Dude at the bar was great. He was talking about how this brewery in England called Phantom made these Blink 182 beers recently and he's dying to get hold of them. So I ordered the beers to my house and am sending them over to him.

Poured at the inaugural Southwest Belgian Fest today (our club made about $2.5K in kickbacks and we need a new A/C for our clubhouse for the love of ****ing god)

I poured for Barrel of Monks out of Florida, pretty good Tripel

I'm not the biggest Belgian beer fan but the Trappist beers were great

Not the best but the most memorable beer was Kerel Kaishaku. Sake yeast, low grain, yet at 15%. Think honey might be used as a fermentable with some fruity esters from the Sake yeast

Anyway, after you've defeated all the other craft beer nerds you must face the final bosses

Their triple mash was incredible this year, and roughly a third of the price and @18%.

I guess you're paying up for the cool bottle and extra 2% LMAO

That beer is great. BA stout with vanilla and cinnamon in brandy barrels. It's a perfect blend of Doug's beers at Cycle and SP's big BA stouts.

KCUnited 11-12-2024 03:11 PM

Made it up to Fate today for King Size

My thoughts:
  • I actually enjoyed it more that I thought I would as I think the base beer, Candy Bar, isn't good and really haven't enjoyed stouts utilizing nuts as they tend to either overpower or taste artificial. But this was pretty enjoyable
  • Like most BA stouts produced here in AZ I don't get much barrel or thiccc mouthfeel which is disappointing for a 2 year aged beer, but I doubt Fate or any other breweries out here are getting many quality barrels. Still, not sure what the barrel contributed other than maybe more sweetness
  • Doesn't appear to be a plan in place to can this, draft only thus far

Solid C+ imo

Sucks not having to-go options, but thanks for checking.

And yeah, I would drink something like a Belching Beaver Peanut Butter Stout before drinking the regular Candy Bar.... King Sized is a lot bolder and I really enjoy the flavor, but yeah not a ton of barrel.

If you guys around Missouri happen to be able to find the Missouri Brewers collaboration beer I would recommend snagging a 4 pack.

Its a Triple NEIPA and even at 10% its extremely crushable and juicy. Best NEIPA I've had in a while. Don't pay attention to the color in the pic, it's much brighter and more orange in real life, the lighting in my kitchen sucks ass or my camera on my phone or both.

Oak & Steel is my favorite and we're now besties after they had Side Project available a few months ago
Maybe Taps on Main, but can be inconsistent
The Belfry

And one place that's probably way under the radar due to location is Barley's Kitchen + Tap in the burbs, and the one at 435/Midland tends to have the better list from the handful of times I've compared.

Indeed. Nice bar on one side with a decent beer selection most of the time and a New York type deli one the other side. Sandwiches are great. For a real treat, Jim's Alley bar is next door and will take you back to 1982 while you sip hipster beer.

So opinions on the following KC breweries?

I already know the heavyweights but want to try some newer/unknown-to-me places when I'm there in a couple weeks:

Vine St
Pathlight
Sandhills
Limitless
Boho
Transport

Also don't care about food, have intentionally left some off as they won't be open while I'm around and bonus points if they're IPA centric

TIA

I haven't been to Vine, have tried their beer. Meh
Sand hills was pretty solid, rock creek (I have never been) is very close by in Mission
Pathlight and limitless have been hugely disappointing (to me)
Transport is trying to get people to hate beer. How they opened another spot in Gartner is a mystery

Maybe try Discourse in OP?
If you go to Friction (I wouldn't), Servaes is across the street. Their IPAs aren't good (to me) but their stout game is decent.
Wild Child and Drastic Measures are cocktail bars in Shawnee (right next to Friction) and are absolutely fantastic

Bearcat 01-19-2025 05:31 PM

Yeah they do ancient/traditional Euro style beers. You kind of have to be into that to appreciate their greatness, which isn't a lot of American beer drinkers (or me really)

I have business by them every 2 weeks so I'll stop in for a pint and its like how I imagine being in Scotland is like, minus the industrial park LMAO

I've been leaning a bit more towards IPAs and sours lately due to the amount of sugar in heavy stouts (if not bourbon)... some stouts these days give me a little bit of a sugar crash even if I split one and only drink 8oz, much less a full 16oz.

Too often I'll feel like complete shit once the sugar crash hits and will be lucky to get a decent night's sleep... a ~10% double/triple IPA doesn't have nearly the impact though.

Damn, the BeerAdvocate page is from 2013, but says it's aged 48 months?!

Didn't hit nearly enough spots that I would have liked to while we were in KC.

Mind you, we stayed downtown with no access to a vehicle unless my parents wanted to taxi us around. Some of the places we ate and drank:

Jack Stack
Taps on Main
Boulevard
Ponak's

Best beer I had on the trip was a Strawberry Shortcake IPA. I wasn't overly impressed with the selection, and I realize most of that was our own fault.

Next time we'll make more of an effort to get out to see and do more.

Alma Mader is the best for beers in that area. It's just a couple of doors down from Boulevard on Southwest Boulevard. Put in on the "must go" list for next time.

You were a couple blocks from Oak & Steel!

Also, we went to Rochester Brewery, or something.

Terrible.

Its pretty amazing. What I love about Beer Barn is they just throw awesome stuff on without any notice for people who know that come in

I walked in ordered a North Park IPA and scanned their board while drinking it and was like OH SHIT a PVW Black Magick

Man, North Park has seriously ruined me on IPAs... I had a couple others at Wandering Tortoise a few weeks ago and they were fine by comparison, but they're almost in the stout realm for me, where I don't even want to try one if I don't KNOW it's going to be North Park-ish or better.
