BKS and Alma are both really good spots as well. Can't sleep on those if you have a chance. They both do lighter beers so well. Any pilsner or lager from those two places will knock your socks off. Perfectly done.

If you're a bourbon drinker, both places have really good bourbon pours, too. |

Still the only place that I've had Side Project on draft other than one of SP's own brick and mortar spots in Maplewood. |

I saw it on social media... I've never had a Side Project stout, but haven't ever gone out of my way for one, either, in terms of trading or whatever. Hours in St. Louis are really random, too, so the few times I've driven through, haven't been able to stop by or they didn't have anything. I'll be there in couple weeks, too, but not sure if/when I'll make it to the Crossroads for beer. |
Found a spot here in town, a honey hole if you will.
An old senile guy who evidently just buys anything from anyone. This past weekend I found some More Smore's from Boulevard - 2 years old, some Desserted Pastry Stout from 3 Sheep's which is a local brewery - 4 years old, and some Buffalo Sweat Oatmeal Cookie Stout from Tallgrass which is from 2013. I've had 2/3 and nothing funny tasting yet. I'll probably try the one from Tallgrass this next weekend. If ya'll don't ever hear from me again, you'll know why. LMAO |
Buffalo Sweat isn't oatmeal cookie stout, it's just a regular old 5.5% oatmeal stout. It wouldn't surprise me to hear that the beer tastes like copper pennies. It's way past its prime. WAY past. That beer wasn't made to be consumed past a year or two old anyway. Way too light in ABV.

Was in KC this past weekend and grabbed an Airbnb within walking distance to KC Bier Co. So drank a lot of Festbier. Their ArrowRed Lager is pretty crushable as well
Made it to BKS on Sunday but they still had some nice Pivo Fest beers on tap. Double Current is a pretty fantastic WCIPA and Space Nelson is always money. I actively did not care for Double Double (red label). Too malty for me but thats a personal preference Didn't make it to Alma Mader. Once I bellied up at KCBC I was pretty much planted Shout out to the pineapple rib fried rice at Buck Tui in OPKS. Not sure I'd put it on the must have bbq list in KC but it was a nice change up to traditional bbq |
KC Bier's Festbier is probably one of my all time favorite "Oktobefest" beers. I love that its not as malty as most of them so seems much lighter.
|
Do you not get the Oktoberfest beers imported in from Germany? I love this month because all the craft beer pubs/shops have the Hacker and Augustiner Oktoberfest export beers.

Buck Tui is great. Some folks from Waldo Thai (amazing local Thai restaurant) spun off to do a BBQ concept and Buck Tui is the result. A little bit pricey but amazingly tasty stuff.

As phisherman said its pricier than it should be but everything I tasted was excellent |

Maybe I misread the can, or my wife did. It's at the in-laws so I'll have to double check this Sunday. |

For it being 11 years old, there was no copper or metallic flavor to it. Very, very light. I had 3-4 sips and decided to just pour the rest because I'd rather not risk it. LMAO |
There's no risk there at all other than the beer tasting like shit.
Nothing that would hurt you can live in alcohol. |

Anyone tried Boulevard's Tiramisu Stout yet?
We just got it in the market up here in GB this week. I'm intrigued. While I'm currently drinking More S'mores. So solid. |

BKS 7th anniversary event today. They have 4x crazy (adjunct) stouts, released yesterday if you are in KC and into that sort of thing. Their Bonus Fortune release DIPA is money. Pun is both awesome and intended.
|
It's pretty mediocre, IMO... it doesn’t smell good and borders on smelling burnt. It's pretty light/medium bodied, not near their Magic Drip goodness. There's a little sweetness and the flavor is growing on me a bit, but wish I had found a single instead of a 4 pack.
It's not a drain pour and at least it was only $18 for the 4 pack... but, this coming from someone hoping they reproduced some recent stout magic (narrator: they did not). https://i.imgur.com/q51LwWU.jpeg |
If you all ever get out to Lake Tahoe, there's a local brewery in Truckee called 50/50 which has a great rotating stock of brews -- not a bad one among them. Top 50? Probably not, but still all great. If someone said they were the only beers I could drink for the rest of my life, I wouldn't be upset.

Hit Trevor's in Scottsdale today, the little one without the driving range
North Park TDH IPA while watching Mizzou along with a single barrel pick and a BA stout https://i.imgur.com/IZ6LnT4.jpg https://i.imgur.com/KcULYpe.jpg |
Phoenix doesn't have the most amazing local beer scene, but damnit they make up for it with the national distribution.

Brisket rangoon was great, had to get the Pad Thai Brisket for the perfect mash up of BBQ and Thai and wasn't disappointed. Also unrelated, found a far better stout for the evening... https://i.imgur.com/TqRl8LS.jpeg |

Talking about Buck Tui inspired me to make Pulled Pork Egg rolls for the game this afternoon. Cole slaw is pickling in some bbq rub pickle now.

One underrated tap list is Barley's out in the burbs... there are two locations, but the one at 435 & Midland is usually pretty legit (I looked at OPKS the other day and it was pretty bad by comparison). https://barleyskitchenandtap.com/shawnee/drinks/ They have a small Oktoberfest lineup (no idea of those are any good choices), a couple of Drekker sours, TG Caramel Apple Fandango, some local IPAs, Prairie Bomb and a really good pumpkin stout. Tried a couple of Pipeworks stouts/barleywine, but wasn't crazy impressed. |
Also finally found the elusive Side Project Stout at Oak & Steel... Coconut Vibes. $45 for the bomber bottle, which is typically about $15 over what I'd pay for a bottle, but totally worth it for finding Side Project in KC (and I'm sure their secondary market is nuts).

Was at Fate's today for an early lunch. Candy Bar Milkstout on menu for Winter.
Had one with my burger. Bought a 4 pack of Pueblo Vienna Lager to take home. Good beer for a hot or sweaty day. |
Hmm, maybe they're hinting at bringing back King Sized this year.

Unfortunately, they're like $15 a bottle. Next time I visit family in Wichita I might have to make the trek south and visit their brewery. |

Maybe it's me, but all of their beers have a weird after taste. I can't really pinpoint the flavor, but every single one of them has it. However, I'd imagine I'll be trying all three of these at some point. LMAO |

But every sip after that was bland and boring. Still love me some Boulevard though. |

Thick and chewy, mostly pumpkin and coffee (the Espresso Marty is fantastic as well).... a meal in a glass. I went to their taproom in OKC last year and it's absolutely a bucket list spot for stout enthusiasts. And I hadn't heard of Southern Tier Chestnut Praline... my brother drove to KC from Syracuse and was on the lookout for Tiramisu and Moka, but didn't find any.:( |
Quote:
I'd imagine they'll be available everywhere else soon, assuming where you live or brother lives they routinely get their beer in market. |
Southern Tier's sweet beers are terrible. Cloyingly sweet in all the wrong ways. The last one I tried had a strong aftertaste of fake sweetener. Many, many other breweries make better pastry stouts than those these days.
|
80 acre is available for limited time Boulevard says.

I've had the Mokah on draft before and didn't have any noticeable after taste. Everything else from them I've noticed it. Very offputting. |

They don't even have it listed on their website's tap list yet, much less FB/Instagram/Untappd. :doh!: They've always been terrible at marketing King Sized. |

This brewery is just 6 months old and the staff in every beer shop and brewery I've been to in NYC told me to go there. |
Quote:
In years past, it's strong on the peanuts and chocolate and pretty close to a candy bar, really.... the only other beer that comes to mind is also west coast, Bottle Logic Study Break (but Study Break isn't BBA). They also make a Shot in the Arm coffee stout that's pretty solid, but rating their beers is like rating NFL teams... BBA King Sized is the Chiefs and anything you place 2nd isn't particularly close. |

Had a 6 pack of both Bell's Hopslam and Odell's Friek in the fridge this week. Kind of blows my mind how easy both are to get these days, plenty left of both on the shelf around town. 10ish years ago both were gone nearly as quickly as they hit the shelves.

I've seen some up here, but haven't grabbed any. |
Taking a little mini break from beer.
But, got myself a bottle of Brewing Projekt's S'Morror for Thanksgiving weekend. Can't wait! Anything smores, graham cracker, or marshmallow - and I'm hooked. I am kinda bummed Dragon's Milk Variant for winter is Oatmeal Cookie, AGAIN. Solid, but I was hoping for something different. |
Had the chance to meet TimBone face to face today; good to meet you, dude!
He brought his wife and son into the brewery that I terrorize on Sundays and I immediately recognized him. We shared some beers and shot the shit. Gave him some BBQ recommendations for the remainder of his visit, totally stoked to have met him. Open invitation to anyone around Lee's Summit on Sundays, come up and drink my beers. |
In Monk's Cafe Philly. Top notch craft beer bar with Pliny the Elder on tap. Currently sipping on a Pliny for President which is decent after having the ****ing amazing Hill Farmstead Double Nelson.

That's cool, wouldn't have guessed Hill Farmstead distributed outside of Vermont.
