Do we trade the last two months we have of Ervin Santana for a second baseman who could provide a much needed boost for the lineup? Discuss..

Yes if the second baseman could be a long term solution. If we're that far back, a couple of starts from Santana aren't going to matter much.

Almost done with rehab at Omaha, I think (hope?).

He started out rough there (0-11 in his first 2-3 games) but has started hitting in the 3-4 games since.

I think he's also out of options, which Duffy still has. And I'm not sure they bring him back after this season (though that will depend on how he pitches down the stretch). So might as well get what you can out of him now.

Plus, it saves time on Duffy's clock, which isn't a bad thing, and I'm not 100 percent sure he's ready to go. We'll see how his second OMaha start goes.

Ceej 06-13-2013 08:20 AM

I like the thought of Duffy in the starting rotation more.

I like having at least one lefty in the rotation.

19 hits and 6 walks in 13 IP in his rehab starts. I know that depends on what they are having him do for rehab. They may just want him to throw strikes and get his velocity back up to speed. At this point, I don't think he is anywhere close to ready to come back to the bigs yet.

Control/command are the last thing to come back after Tommy John, usually.

It sounds like Duffy's velocity is just fine (he's been pumping 95-96).

His first start in Omaha was really bad (7 hit, 2 BB in just 2 IP) and is skewing those numbers a bit.

Walk rate was a little high in his three starts at NWA (4 in 10 2/3 works out to about 3.4 BB/9, which isn't great but isn't awful, either), but that was the only real concern there.

We'll see how he does in his next few Omaha starts. That BB rate still needs to come down. Would like to see him get down to around 2 BB/9 rate at Omaha, which is where he was in 2010 and 2011.

I'm not so sure about that.

Dyson has pretty poor judgment when the ball flies off the bat.

teedubya 06-13-2013 12:22 PM

The Royals will most likely be bad enough to just miss the playoffs... and just good enough to not trade James Shields for prospects.

gblowfish 06-13-2013 12:23 PM

They won't DFA Frenchy. They just won't. GMDM is very hard headed about some guys. Look how long he trotted Kyle Davies out there. If a guy came here from the Braves, he's a "made man." Plus the promotions wanks have "Frenchy Quarter" days scheduled into September. I'm not kidding. The Royals are the kind of crappy organization that would keep a guy on the 25 man roster just because they had some T-shirts printed up that they didn't want to waste.

Please prove me wrong.....pleeeeeeeeze.....

If our pitchers continue their insane performance so far (it's a lot to ask, we're currently #1 in the league in E.R.A), we would only need to average around four runs a game to be a seriously threat in October.

I only hope Dayton has the foresight to be willing to deal for a bat at 2B when August comes along.

J.C. Gutierrez is who I would DFA. Frenchy is next on the list though.

Now that Hosmer is making more consistent contact, I really hope we can see him start to recognize bad pitches sooner and start to turn on them. Hopefully a more relaxed yet aggressive attitude will help him with that. Early in the season he always seemed to be on the defensive.

Sean Manaea signing watch:

There's a great thread on the Royals scout board tracking draft signings. Currently, the Royals have signed 7 of the 11 picks whose bonuses count towards the draft pool.

They signed second-round pick Cody Reed for exactly his slot value. All others have seen savings, some significant.

If the Royals can sign 3rd-round pick Cody Hope and 4th-round pick Zane Evans for slot, they would have about $3.75 million to offer Manaea. That would involve paying the tax for going the 8 percent over your draft pool you're allowed without loss of picks.

What would be great is if Hope is willing to sign for 500k, saving another 160k. They could get that deal pretty darn close to $4 million flat if that's the case.

Also, don't know if it has been discussed here, but the Royals drafted a guy whose last name is Fukofuka. He's probably an under-slot signing throwaway guy (the only video of him playing baseball on the web is 2 minutes long and features him picking at a blister on his hand in the BP cage for 1/2 of it, and fouling balls off in soft toss for the other half), but the name is awesome.

If we're in the race, which it looks like we well could be, you have to keep him. We'll get draft compensation when he walks.

However, it wouldn't be the dumbest thing in the world to try to extend him. Wouldn't go crazy, but I'd probably offer.

I remember all offseason discussing potential pitchers. I believe Duncan correctly assessed that Santana's fastball being a little low in speed was his problem. I do t recall the why but I am certainly glad it is fixed. If we do play our way into serious contention there is no way we can trade him. The chemistry on the pitching staff is excellent right now.

You have to make a "qualifying" offer, which is a contract of at least one year for at least a set amount based on average contracts of other FA pitchers or some such (kind of like the franchise tag).

If you don't make the offer, you don't get compensation for the pitcher. If no one signs the pitcher before the MLB drat, you don't get compensation.

I'd be hesitant to offer Santana a long-term deal because of his age, his tendency to have terrible years, and his heavy reliance on his slider. But he's been damn good for KC and the trade has worked out perfectly.

If they stay in it, you keep him. You will need him down the stretch and would like to line up Shields and Santana 1-2 in a potential playoff series.

What's crazy is that Santana's AVG FB velocity is up, but only slightly (0.2 MPH). I think the main difference is that his HR/FB rate was crazily high last year.

He's locating better and playing in front of a tremendous run-prevention defense. He does seem to be working in the change and two-seam fastball more, but not a HUGE change.
