For KC United and Bearcat, Fate has Coconut Candy Bar Milkstout on tap as of today and it is delicious! :D

Anyone heading to prop days? I looked at my calendar a few days ago and noticed I had a rare weekend with no plans so the wife and I are headed to Chicago on Friday and coming back Sunday.

Today is the day! Pregaming prop days at Maplewood

How was it? |
We need the Prop Day report!
And I've been lacking heavy stouts (hell, looks like the last pic I posted was early September from Equilibrium :shake: ).... this one is amazing, great cinnamon flavor with the maple syrup. Headed to Prairie in a couple weeks, another long-time bucket list type of breweries (and probably tops Southern Tier in that category, with the amount of beer they produce). https://i.imgur.com/IoH5IzJ.jpg |
One of the few times I didn't run out to grab some BCS on Black Friday, but happened to run by a place and got a Banana Foster...it's solid, some good banana but not overpowering. Definitely not the level of OHSO Bananarchy, but a good pour.
|
Oh hey. Sorry.
I really enjoyed the entire lineup except the Backyard - way too jammy/sweet. Bananas foster is a really good variant and widely available. |
I think Goose Island just did a big release of stouts Friday. Looks pretty impressive.

Heading to Phoenix for the KU bowl game. What are the best breweries/bars that you guys would recommend?

Sleepy Whale Beer Barn The Wandering Tortoise Breweries Meh...but if you must then Wren House The Shop (Tempe) I'm also watching ticket prices and will probably go, Chase seems like a weird location fitting a football field in a domed stadium when there's a perfectly good college stadium that seats more available but my Guaranteed Rate mortgage was sold to Chase earlier this year so it make sense |
I hadn't seen KU was here, so that's cool... Chase Field is an interesting choice to host a bowl game.
Wren House is a local favorite Tombstone Arizona Wilderness Fate in Scottsdale/Tempe OHSO has several locations around Scottsdale/Tempe/Gilbert... I don't think their regular stuff is anything special, but they make killer stouts. Downtown-ish... Angel's Trumpet House, The Theodore, Wandering Tortoise, King's Beer & Wine (half bar with like 50 taps, half beer store). Ground Control is great, but it's out a ways from downtown. Rift Wine Bar and Tap in south Scottsdale is cool, but relatively small. If you're here long enough for a Chiefs game, Rooster Tavern in Scottsdale is a cool Chiefs bar. |

Quote:
1a Wren House 1b Kitsune 2 Roses by the Stairs 3 Simple Machine 4 Arizona Wilderness (either location) 5 The Shop (their beers are okay but its a cool spot in an ideal location) I like Tombstone's beers but their PHX location is kind of a turd I also probably sell PHX breweries short but there's not a ton to be excited about...yet, we're getting there This distribution footprint here is where its at though which is why I recommended the better beer bars. We get a bunch of stuff from San Diego, LA, Portland, Seattle, Denver, and Florida Also if you're into mead, the Superstition downtown location is pretty cool |
Quote:
And yeah, granted I haven't been to many of the Arizona breweries, it's mostly because I don't see any killer lineups whenever I do a bit of research... love going to OHSO for a 15% stout or Fate just for the one stout they haven't released in two years (:cuss: ), but not sure I've seen a flight-worthy lineup anywhere for Arizona beers (but need to lookup a couple on your list). |

Honest answer is that Wren House and AZ Wilderness have decent sour/wild programs The barely beer, dessert sours, you can find in abundance everywhere here On a more positive note BL Darkstar November variants are around the city DSN 3 - the Rittenhouse barrel is the most fire imo https://i.imgur.com/r8rnTEm.jpg |
Quote:
Plain old Darkstar November is already freaking great. |
I need to hit up Craft Beer Quick Stop... if they're keeping untappd up to date, I could spend $500 there right now. LMAO Looks like they have at least a couple of those variants, too.
|

A lot of places like this also have sneaky good bourbon bottles though AZ built different https://i.imgur.com/sZLd4zy.jpg |
Yeah, I've been pining over their FB page all this time like they were posting Tyreek highlights.
I haven't really looked for bourbon much around Phoenix, but will have to start. |

Okay, it's 80°.... First time trying this one and it's right up there with Bananarchy... smells like a caramelized banana. https://i.imgur.com/lXUHClP.jpg |

We had our first CP AZ Collab. Well, KCU did all the work, but lewdog and I contributed our expert beer drinking opinions on adjuncts (and then our expert beer drinking).
A sour with peach, mango, and vanilla. Turned out great and a perfect beer for the beautiful 95° day in the shadow of Pool Buddha, along with sampling a few Drekkers, TG Strawberry Shortcake Fandango, Bourbon Barrel Ale, etc. It was the perfect day out in Globe. A few of the suggested names... Peach Mandango (lewdog) ....I think this may have been the winner? How about Lewdog's Secret Garden Ale
|
I'm at Grand Canyon Brewing and Distillery in Kingman AZ on my way to Las Vegas.
Having a Just the Spruce Tip Red Ale. 8.5% ABV 32 IBUs Nice place, good beer and food. Convenient stop a little over halfway there. |

Thanks for the trade, I'll report back on the Revolution stouts.... it might be a couple weeks though. LMAO |
Dark Lord Day Weekend seemed like a good time to try some Chicago area stouts.
Tried and pictured in reverse order of BeerAdvocate reviews. On and On says it's a stout, "blending into a stout fluent in the language of barleywine"... pours and maybe even leans towards barleywine. Good stuff. Deth's Tar, a straightforward, big/bold/thick stout. I think I tried this one at Revolution (or maybe a variant), doesn't disappoint, and the body really stuck out drinking it right after On and On. VSOD, reminiscent of BCBS or the best years of Dragon's Milk, but thicker than both... it has that hard to describe bourbon barrel sweetness to it that makes it the winner of the weekend. https://i.imgur.com/YYz4RKo.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/k3QEmol.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/2Yq691b.jpeg |
I'm at Fate's having a Belgian Trippel and it is fantastic.
Tastes just a tinge sour, then has some banana notes, it's dry and finishes nice. Definitely a favorite. 9.0% ABV IBU 25 |
I just decided to make a career change about a year and a half ago.
I work for a beer distributor now and I've drank so much beer the last 1.5 years. Good, good stuff. Definitely going to be a mainstay in this thread. |

I have a good friend that always has Spotted Cow at her house. I have one about once a year to see if I will ever understand the hype. It never works, it is beer flavored beer. |
Quote:
So, it checks out. But, New Glarus, outside of their actual brewery is just so average. And honestly, a lot of the Green Bay breweries are very average. |
New Glarus makes some really good stuff. But they aren't Moon Man or Spotted Cow. Those are OK but nothing special.
They've done some wild ales and lambic style beers over the years that were world class and super sought after in the beer nerd trader world. |

This years On and On definetely leans towards the barleywine side imo. So if you like sweeter "stouts" without the adjuncts its on point (collab with Half Acre who owns Chicago in BA stouts, primarly because they focus on like 3 or 4 instead of a dozen like the rest) DBVOSD is nothing but a barrel + age flavor showcase. Rich, decadent, riding the line of almost too much but (hopefully) we're all here for the barrel and blend and thats where I feel Rev bests Goose (not that you were comparing apples to apples between the 2). Goose producing for the masses vs Rev producing because they're invested in their product https://i.imgur.com/KJGuW8v.jpg https://i.imgur.com/pg6aUX4.jpg |

Was in the mood for some craft porters and bought a variety of things. Also picked up a Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA.
$35 six pack My first is the KBS Spicy Chocolate. This may be the heaviest/thickest beer I ever had. A tinge of spice and definitely has flavor. Not for the novices.... |

Picked up OHSO's latest Knights on Windsor, because what says 'June in Arizona' like a 14% BBA Scotch Ale... they always do an outstanding job of mixing flavors so nothing is overpowering. And it drinks lighter than their stouts, of course.

Enjoying a hazy as **** DIPA from Sureshot, my favourite brewery in the UK. Sureshot are quite a new brewery and the head brewer/owner used to be the head brewer at Cloudwater when they were awarded 2nd best brewery in the world by Ratebeer. Tastes just like the beers Cloudwater used to make.
