Looks like Nevada and Moundville, MO both caught twisters bright and early this morning.

Bob Dole 04-02-2025 12:41 PM

Been following the damage to my hometown on FB this morning. Thankfully it doesn’t appear that any died. The real damage is about 10 miles away in Moundville where I spent a lot of my summers growing up. Town of about 120 people lost the service station that’s been there for at least 50 years, which now means the nearest fuel and repair service is 10 miles away. Looks like the Post Office made it, but there are a lot of missing roofs. It’s just odd looking at damage to stuff that’s been there as long as you can remember.

PHOG 04-02-2025 12:48 PM

Owasso OK (north of Tulsa) got hit early this morning (around 6:00 or so) at the N96th and Garnett area. Several houses with roof damage and whatnot, but luckily no injuries reported. Most likely in the same line of storms as Nevada and Moundville, just further southwest.

Pretty sure it was the same line. I think NWS released the Vernon County Tornado warning at 7:15.

It was probably closer to 7, that's when I got up and turned on the TV and Owasso was just ending (tornado warning ended around 7:15), except for the damage reports of course.

That's nothing. The EF4 I photographed a couple of years ago was on the ground for almost 60. Killed 6 people in winterset, south and west of Des Moines and dissipated just north of us.

It’s not 60 miles, but it’s far from “nothing”. Thankfully, it’s almost entirely farmland and timber between the 2 towns.

I guess I just don't see 17 miles as that long. I've snapped photos of 4 different tornadoes. All four of them were on the ground for at least 30 miles with the aforementioned EF4 and an EF4 i saw in 1995 being on the ground for 57. I guess I've just seen (relatively speaking) a lot of long-track tornadoes.

Here's a pic of the EF4 and the second one was an EF2, IIRC. In the 2nd one, the structure to the left is actually a hail shaft. The tornado is at the base of the structure on the right. I never did get a picture of the actual funnel.

On my own. I've always wanted to do one of those up-close-and-personal tours but just never could justify spending the money.

Interestingly enough, both of those pictures were taken from me back deck. I wasn't chasing them, they were chasing me.

How did I not know this existed?

https://precip.ai/rainfall-totals/zipcode/75501

You can zoom in to your actual location in the ZIP.

I’ve gotten just over 7” in the past 24 hours, which means the past 17 because it didn’t start raining until 5pm yesterday. That’s a lot of rain in a place where houses don’t have basements because the water table is so high.

I wonder how accurate it is, and how do they get their information.

For example, you can move the map a little and it will show a slightly more or less rainfall amount.

Doppler radar can estimate storms/rainfall/time and give an estimated amount of precipitation. Sure they are getting data from NWS , local TV radars and local weather stations.

That’s my assumption. KTBS3 Texarkana/Shreveport has what they claim is the most powerful Doppler radar west of the Mississippi (1 million watts). It’s what I watch during tornado warnings and it’s amazing what kind of stuff the live app shows.

I got out and went to town yesterday and it was bad, but not as bad as I expected. A lot of the problems here happen in the same places repeatedly, and there is never any real attempt to fix it. There’s video of a local bar that floods every couple of years, and people are still there wading through a foot of water. lol

The 12” whistle under my drive at the road rotted out a couple of years ago and I replaced it with an 18” version, which seems to have solved my individual runoff issue. I’ve got another 12” whistle about midpoint to the house where 2 creeks combine, and it did fine.

All in all, I’m happy. Tornadoes stayed away and no trees fell on the house.

Ouch. I've experienced hail like that once, and once was plenty. The biggest hailstones I found later were the size of tennis balls. Sounded like we were being bombed. Scared the **** out of the cats. Luckily we didn't lose any windows and the car was in the garage, but every car that was parked outside was damaged, and the board had all the roofs replaced. It was really weird because it was pretty much completely confined to my neighborhood - a quarter mile in any direction there was no damage.

At this rate, Arkansas is going to be underwater by the end of the month.

Hail is one of the most amazing phenomena in nature.

Air movement is strong enough due to massive pressure differences to lift a large piece of ice 60, 70, 80 thousand feet into the air before it gets so large it falls back down to earth.

It’s incredible when you think about it.

displacedinMN 04-20-2025 08:18 AM

google

The strength of the updraft within a storm determines how large hailstones can grow and be lifted. Stronger updrafts (upward winds) are needed to lift larger hailstones. Specifically, winds of 64 mph can support a golf ball-sized hailstone, while grapefruit-sized hail requires updrafts near 100 mph. The updraft also plays a role in how long the hailstone stays in the freezing air, allowing it to accumulate more ice and grow large
