He seems decent at soccer but is definitely not a pro and isn't even remotely close to giving it everything hes got and he's just embarrassing her. Exhibit A for why no one watches female sports outside of shit like tennis.

Would seem BMI would give you your answer there, no?

Women just have higher body fat percentages than men as a rule. That's going to make them a little more buoyant. Probably not enough to matter over any relatively short period of time (not enough to offset the difference in raw power anyway) but it would seem over distance that starts to show up.

Interesting. It does look like marathon swims, especially the open water ones, favor women.

chiefzilla1501 04-03-2023 03:05 PM

It really doesn’t matter if men are better than women in a sport paywise. What matters is what they pull in.

The men’s soccer team deserves more. However it’s not as cut and dry since uswnt do pull their weight. Not just in gate revenue but they basically created a whole category of sponsorships that Nike etc has rained with money. It’s not because it’s a better product but for many women it’s a more relatable product.

So both things can be true at the same time. That equal pay is a ludicrous idea but fair pay is fair to question and with any CBA I trust that players are telling the truth way more than the administrators who don’t open their books.

Why are we talking about fairness then? This isn't fairness - it's simple redistribution.

And again - the mens curling team 'represents the country' - should the Olympic basketball teams be subsidizing their prize pool?

I think things are different with national teams vs competing in a league, but that's just my opinion.

Isn’t that a big part of what happened? That soccer United marketing (SUM) was basically bundling USWNT marketing revenues to grow MLS? That the $6B total you talked about with FIFA doesn’t unbundle womens soccer? There’s a lot of shady shit and the leaderships prioritizing mls over us men’s soccer is always going to feel unforgivable. **** those guys.

There’s plenty of shady shit here. They had a good case to fight for more money as with any CBA. Unlike the wnba they age a good case because they are actually worth a lot. They shot for the moon and used every angle to get it. I don’t agree with the outcome but I get why they were upset.

Are they getting an equal percentage of their respective revenue pots? What I mean is that if the men get say 10% of the revenue generated by the men's team, then the women's team should get the same percentage of the revenue they generated. That is equal and fair.

Nick overstates the case, but he's right that it's an old tale. I can't help but think of Ali as the original brash black athlete who was despised by most of America in the 1960s. Not only for later calling Cassius Clay a slave name and adopting an Islamic one and refusing to serve in what he saw as an unjust war, but from the beginning after his 1960 return from the Rome Olympics for being the "uppity negro" who challenged the social order and taunted his opponents before, during and after bouts. What this woman did is nothing compared to his antics.

It says so much for the country that he is now nearly universally revered. How far we've come in 60 years. Man he was awesome. Funny as hell too. I promise it's worth four minutes to watch this interview of him talking about whiteness back in 1971.

Women's world generated about $160 million.

Tell me how you're going to iron out that disparity in raw dollars?

Give the last place team in the men's bracket 1% of the winnings and you're talking $75 million to split between it's players. You'd have to give the first place team 50% of the overall pool in the women's bracket to beat that.

So how the hell are you gonna touch that? The numbers simply don't work. I mean kick the numbers around and you're talking a proportional WIN by, what, 3-4 times greater revenue share for the women than the men?

And if you want to talk strict merit, take the worst team in the men's world cup and have them play the USWNT - they'd beat them by double digits.

Men's soccer yields about 4000% more revenue than women's soccer - yes, the differences should absolutely be as dramatic as they are. Truth be told, they should probably be even more extreme.

It's funny in a way to think about, but the people most up in arms about the unfair pay do nothing to actually fix it like............attending games and such. The easiest solution for all of this is simple. Support the women's game regardless of sport like the men's ones. If people actually put their money where their mouth was this would be a nonstarter. They won't because they don't want to support women's leagues by watching and attending. They just want a cut of someone else's revenue to compensate for their lack of desire to support women's leagues.

Women’s soccer is well attended including all the exhibitions they run throughout the year. Athletes like Alex Morgan sell a shitload of merch. And the ratings are excellent when they play in tourney games. It’s not like the wnba where they’re trying to pretend they’re something they’re not. USWNT pulls in a lot of money. It’s just the pro teams that don’t do all that great.

Like any athlete in a CBA they tried to squeeze as much juice out as they can. But this isn’t nearly the same as something worthless trying to hustle money.

Their exhibitions and US tourneys routinely pull in about 20-25k which is very healthy. And their World Cup ratings have been outstanding. It’s really just the pro leagues that have been sluggish. But the uswnt is pulling a lot of dollars. I don’t agree with equal pay either but it’s not like they’re mooches.

You can’t blame them for trying. Every union takes advantage of leverage during a CBA negotiation. And the USMNT bombing the World Cup a few years ago and not pulling their weight gave them a bargaining chip. The Us soccer federation brought a lot of this shit on themselves and you can’t blame the women for being upset that their revenues were being thrown into this general pool that turned into an MLS grift.

In the end they got equal pay but I don’t think the men give a shit because they’re making a shitload overseas and USMNT gives them opps to bank on a shitload of sponsorships.

The problem was the woman wanted a guaranteed salary regardless of revenue. While men just wanted a % of the gate. So when woman had a good run brought in almost as much revenue it made it look uneven.

But we’re talking about a sport where people do attend and buy lots of merch. And televise to very good ratings. And pull huge sponsors because it’s a really profitable demographic. So in this case it’s not the right example.

Nah. I'm fine with enjoying things that are enjoyable. Your loss for anyone who deliberately refused out of some kind of macho protest. Even bigger loss for anyone so caught up in it that they have to go into a thread to discuss a sport they don't even watch. I don't usually watch women's bball but the final 4 was hella fun to watch. That guys still around? I thought when barstool jumped the shark a few years ago when Boston sports went to shit again that he would fade away with them. If he’s saying something we should try and get a celebrity boxing match between him and Angel. That guys needed a public ass kicking for awhile.

So this is a full blown race issue now.

We're not a serious country.

This is what made you say that? This issue?

There's a host of issues that could have led you to that before now.

No, I've said it before, but it's just utterly ridiculous.

The girl followed Clark around for 15 seconds taunting her after the most watched women's game in years (I'm guessing). That's going to be discussed, and there's going to be criticism. It's not about race, even if it is for a very small minority.

Why are you so defensive about this though?

Not all about race? Sure. I can definitely agree with you on that.

What I can't agree with is that there isn't a racial issue here at all. ****...look at some of the people in this thread. If Clark was the one who did it...it would be cheered.

Is everything a racial issue? No but on the flip side...you can't claim that it's completely devoid of it either.

And then you've got idiots like MarkDavis'shairyballsack who are pissed off because nobody "plays with class" anymore. His reeruned ass can sit the **** down.

It would be cheered because we are on a board filled with Iowa simps acting like they give a flying **** about women's basketball and not just because they have some connection to the school and want to claim the women's basketball team as their team.

Not only that but just take a dip in the DC area and you'll know why I said it.

Haha America. “Let’s give the bankrupt degenerate gambler millions of dollars to convince other idiots like him that they can be ‘self made’ millionaires too!” What a funny move. I hope he gambles it all right back to them again. He definitely doesn’t seem smart enough to stay wealthy for too long.

Dude, if Iowa won and Clark followed Angel around 15 secs trying to taunt her, she would absolutely be criticized for it. Maybe some of the people on both sides would be arguing the other side of it, but there would be criticism one way or another.

Yes, for some people this is about race, but people like you tend to act like that's a one way street. It's not.

I try to limit my association with that area. I dip the toe every 4 years or so and that's enough for me.

There are always going to be people criticizing on the other side. It's life and how this country works.

But take a look at how this thread went. It was about Clark and how awesome she was playing....until they played LSU. Then you had guys complaining that the refs were ****ing them over because they were minorities and Iowa had all white players.

But that's sports fans. It's nothing new, and it's never going to change.

It's not a race issue. Angel isn't some victim, that's the narrative I'm seeing now, and it's ridiculous.

Funny do you think white people complained about race after, Nuremburg, apartheid or Jim Crow?

I bet nobody was accused of race Baiting then.

Tiktok keeps popping up with him hosting some dumb podcast with people half his age. I couldn't resist scrolling a few to see what he was up to and it appears to be complete teenage gossip shit and half the time it's just him mispronouncing everyone's name.

Jesus Christ dude....for a portion of America...IT IS A RACE ISSUE. It was a race issue before she even waved her hand in front of her face. Just look at the people who are now calling out Nick Wright because "he has to do this because he has a black wife". Or he saw how people were acting about it and instead of just calling it over the top....were adding their own racial bullshit to the argument.

Is what she did over the top? Yes. But do you know the one person you don't hear complaining about it? Clark. She talked shit and lost. She accepted it and moved on. I'm sure she was pissed about it but I hardly think that she's giving this as much thought as the rest of America.

You don't get the point. Not everybody, actually the majority, aren't criticizing Angel's actions simply because she's black. Just because that's the issue for a small minority doesn't mean that it is for all of the others.

The criticism is fair. She's not a victim.

Also, something tells me that if this were the other way around and many blacks people were complaining about Clark's actions, you wouldn't accept this narrative so easily.

As always there's two sides to this. I tend to agree that theres a double standard. Largely I don't give a **** what she did because athletes, especially male athletes, do this all the time and to a large degree Caitlin Clark does it too and she didn't seem to care. At the same time what Reese did was excessive and definitely way beyond what Clark did. Clark was just being cocky and clapping back. Reese was taunting. Again, I don't think it's classless or anything. Just part of the game. But they aren't one in the same.

Where I'm a lot more bothered is the way dawn Staley threw bait and the media took it and somehow turned Clark into a cocky asshole and her supporters as racist hypocrites. She screamed racism because the Iowa coach complimented her team for being "bar fighters" meaning they play tough and scrappy. She then tried to parallel that to racist insults that I don't think were ever said. That's what Reese fed off of because it doesn't seem like Iowa was being disrespectful specifically to lsu. This is coming from someone who doesn't root for Iowa and is usually plenty supportive if diversity efforts. I thought Staley crossed the line and the media took the bait and unfairly dogpiled on Iowa.
