CUT CANDIDATES

In being part of two penalties on his first preseason snap last week, totaling negative receiving yards for the game, Toney perfectly encapsulated his Chiefs experience to this point -- and the reality that’s staring him and the team in the face.

The Chiefs might no longer have room for the player they once traded multiple draft picks for and who once helped them win a Super Bowl. Toney had a disastrous Week 1 last year, couldn’t hold onto his WR or punt-return roles and was inactive for the Super Bowl in February. Injuries have been a consistent issue for him, but the bottom line is that Toney clearly hasn’t proven his worth this preseason, even after Andy Reid tried to turn up the pressure a bit through the media.

Even with Marquise Brown’s injury, it’s hard to see a path where Toney is in the Chiefs’ plans this season.

DJ's left nut 08-23-2024 09:20 AM

I guess you can IR a guy prior to cut-down now.

Only way I see Toney making the team is if they IR Brown. And the only way I see him surviving Brown being activated is if he's active (which seems like a long-shot) and impactful in the first 2 weeks.

IF the team puts Brown on the IR and IF they find the trust to give Toney a real shot as a gameday active and WR3, I think he'll take the opportunity and run with it.

But the ship may have sailed. They clearly value his talent but I just don't think they trust the guy a bit. And he really has nobody to blame but himself for that.

Pasta Little Brioni 08-23-2024 09:22 AM

You cut him. He'd rather be Young Joka

ThrobProng 08-23-2024 09:26 AM

He should've been cut mid-season last year.

To what purpose?

Giving Moore additional snaps?

There's never been a reason to dump him apart from being punitive and that's not something an NFL team should be doing. Nobody ever forced him off the roster.

This year things appear quite different in that regard. The addition of Brown and Worthy, as well as the retention of Hardman and possible development of Ross (who looks better, if still not quite an versatile contributor) have changed the calculus for him substantially.

Why shouldn't an NFL team punish (cut) a player for singlehandedly losing multiple games while contributing nothing positive?

If Toney makes the team I will shoot my mom

Mahomes hates him. Hes toxic on the field. Lazy. Actively makes the team worse.

You cut a player when you have a better option.

You don't cut a player in a fit of pique.

The Chiefs didn't have a better option.

I'll trade a 3rd/6th every year for a player that made a play that turns around a SB from a loss to a win. That momentum and field position changed everything. Thanks for that but he's doesnt seem interested in football, cut him and lets see if he becomes a successful rapper.

Didn't have to shoot her, thank god. We cut that piece of shit.

And people stop with the we wouldn't have won the SB without him. We were winning during that punt return and any good and bad in the return is largely a product of Dave Toub and the blocking scheme.

He is still two-time SB champion Kadarius Toney and hopefully he doesn't speak ill will of us in his rap songs that will get 237 views on Spotify.

Eh, looks more like a Super Bowl LVIII Chiefs tatt than simply just the Chiefs.

He did have the longest SB punt return of all time in that game, as well as a TD. Can’t ever take that away from him.

He definitely helped us win a Super Bowl the first year he was here and I’m happy for that.

But after last year and especially how he didn’t redeem himself in this year‘s preseason, I’m glad to see him gone. We definitely do not need him.

And I doubt he is ever going to come back to haunt us. He just doesn’t have the character, intelligence, durability or hands to back up his skills.

I mean yeah it was a big play, but to say it turned it from a loss to a win is pretty insane. We were literally up by a point and he fields the ball at the 30 yard line. Knowing Patrick Mahomes in that situation there is not a single doubt in my mind that if he gets the ball at the 30, then he's gonna go on TD drive that gives the Eagles the ball back down 8 with under 2 minutes left and no timeouts.

I appreciate what he did, but we win would have won without him.

Rainbarrel 09-06-2024 07:03 PM

Per Field Yates of ESPN, Toney had a tryout on Friday with the Browns. Maybe working his way back East.

Two things:

1. Players like Toney don’t “retire” from pro sports. You can’t walk away from something you don’t have — a job.

2. He always thought of himself more as a rapper than a football player. That’s why the NFL is “retiring” him (not vice versa).

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚: Kadarius Toney went on IG live and said that he is retiring from the NFL and wants to be considered a rapper instead of a football player.<br><br>Yung Joka is now the name he prefers to be called. <a href="https://t.co/Dxq4RSl82S">pic.twitter.com/Dxq4RSl82S</a></p>&mdash; Dov Kleiman (@NFL_DovKleiman) <a href="https://twitter.com/NFL_DovKleiman/status/1912980135260697045?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">April 17, 2025</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

He'll only want to be a rapper, until he has to work hard at it. Then he'll move on to something else which requires little effort. Losers do that.
