They look like they are by far the best team. But they also did last year and didn’t win in the end.

Yep, the long & short of a 1 loss season. Just don't make it the last game. Last year that UCLA game took a lot out of them, they figured they would walk over Baylor. They didn't expect Baylor to play so physical with them.

Same thing this year, pressure D and play physical with them. But I'm not sure if that will do it this year.

McCormack would have to act like a non-pussy and get those bigs in foul trouble, but he can't even do that against D2 bigs. I get so sick of seeing him take fade-away shots in the paint against 6'7" guys.

The season-long front-runner rarely seems to win it all.

UK in 2011-2012 is about as close as we normally get. 2018 Nova too, but that year was more competitive at the top. It’s just hard for teams to stay so locked in game in and game out.

Oddly enough, it’s KU that looks like it has the soft-ish schedule and not Gonzaga for once. We don’t play a ranked team until the end of January.

No guarantees, but I suspect KU ends up playing Alabama this week.

BWillie 11-24-2021 11:48 AM

As expected, Gonzaga rolls UCLA who is just an overrated team. Good, but not elite team. So funny we place 500% more stock in a single elimination tournament last year than their 10 regular season losses they had.

BWillie 11-24-2021 11:50 AM

I'm going to be in Orlando at the ESPN Events Invitational. It's only a 5,000 seat arena, so any seat should be a good seat even though we paid for lower bowl first come first serve seats.

Alabama is the only team that worries me from that group as they just chuck threes all game and we have been susceptible to losing to teams like that. Should be alot of fun though. Will be interesting to see how they look with Jalen Wilson back - and who loses their minutes.

I don’t think 2018 Nova was a season-long frontrunner. I’m pretty sure Duke and a few others were at the top early on and even late in the year.

KU will likely play Alabama in a few days.

Well...they also returned all their starters including a projected top of the lottery pick. That makes a lot of difference, college kids get better.

It will almost certainly be Clemence sadly.

Watching Charlie "clank" Moore right now playing for Miami FL vs Dayton. He still sucks

Reerun_KC 11-25-2021 01:52 PM

This team is gonna be good. Really good by years end. Not Gonzaga good. But damn close.

I think they still don’t have an answer for a skilled big, but there aren’t too many of those around.

He actually played ball in high school in KC. Blue Valley Northwest.

Same school as Clay Custer and Ben Richardson who played for Chicago Loyola.

These are the same issues with the same players that we saw last year. It's a concern, yeah.

Reerun_KC 11-26-2021 02:12 PM

Getting blown out now. They have just crushed Kansas this half.

KC_Connection 11-26-2021 02:12 PM

No heart, no intensity. Dayton just wants it more.

KC_Connection 11-26-2021 02:16 PM

Worth pointing out right now that Dayton has lost to UMass Lowell, Lipscomb, and Austin Peay this year. They're not good at all.

No, I'm saying there's no defending this effort level.

ROYC75 11-26-2021 02:21 PM

Up 10 the start to half I'm thinking we losing okay, a bump in the road now it's got a point now we don't know how to put a game away.

KC_Connection 11-26-2021 02:21 PM

McCormack is the softest 6'10, 260 pound guy I've ever seen. Like can he grab a rebound at all? A loose ball?

There's no point in defending it, just like there's no point in overreacting to it.

Who is overreacting? I said it's a red flag (which it is, these are the same issues that plagued them last year). I didn't say they were doomed.

KC_Connection 11-26-2021 02:33 PM

Good for them, Dayton deserved that a hell of a lot more. They came to play in the 2nd half and KU just wilted under the pressure. Didn't defend at all, didn't rebound. Same old stuff with this group.

Should easily end up being KU's worst loss of the season.

There were some errors, but the real issue was that KU's main guys just got outplayed. Self can't get this particular group to play as hard as they need to. It just doesn't seem to be in them.

I'm more worried about the rebounding myself. They got outrebounded by 11 by Dayton. Those extra possessions were the difference.

It's not good when Christian Braun is your team's best player on the glass (McCormack had 1 defensive rebound).

MarkDavis'Haircut 11-26-2021 02:50 PM

Just saw the final shot.

Fitting ending for a game at Disney. Their scriptwriters couldn't have come up with a crazier ending.

Would be good to recruit a big who can defend and rebound again at some point too. Been a long 2 years since Udoka.

KC_Connection 11-26-2021 03:00 PM

Another problem for this team is going to be that Remy Martin is completely useless defensively. Opposing teams have and will continue to target him when they need a basket (it's why Self pulled him out of the game for the last possession, which the team defended quite well). When he gets beat repeatedly off the dribble, we need a big who is able to help at the rim. McCormack is passable at that, but his feet and his reactions aren't where they need to be to cover up that issue.

Also, if Martin is going to play big minutes (which he still should), we need to be taking advantage of his offensive ability particularly in end of game isolation situations. So basically the opposite of passing the ball to McCormack on the block and hoping he makes the right decision.

ROYC75 11-26-2021 03:09 PM

Get yourself ready to watch us get beat by Alabama now!

That was KU's worst loss by KenPom rating since February 2013 and the famous game against TCU (Dayton was 112 today versus TCU's 265 that day).

If that TCU game is the one I'm thinking of, I turned that shit off at halftime, it was so freakin' bad.... it's not like TCU played well, as they shot just a hair under 40% and like 57% FT, but KU somehow not only played worse, but significantly worse.
