After watching the deal about their "Alcohol" department (evidently they're one of the most ass-kissed reseller n the planet and get the red-carpet treatment like none-other around the globe when they go shopping!!), I decided to give their $15 bottle a try. Not the best stuff ever, but it's as good as most other spiced rums. No, it's NOT Kraken, but nothing is. But it can hold it's own with the likes of the Captain and Sailor Jerry...

I got the Vitamix months ago... As for the PC mix, nope, Diet Coke and a bag of limes... That's the way this Sailor Rolls.

I sense a touch of coconut in the Kirkland rum, but nothing like you see in coconut rums, so it's unique, but I like it.

Then again, at $15, I'm sure my wallet was helping my taste buds!

Kirkland Signature Vodka = Grey Goose

Kirkland Light Beer = Natural Light

Yes....I love Natty Light too. Sometimes you have to go back from where you can from.

What kind of sweet vermouth do you use? Once I went the way of old fashioneds, it's hard to go back to Manhattans.

Just did an old fashioned with Weller 12 and some orange bitters; those things are easy like Sunday morning.

BigOlChiefsfan 05-23-2015 10:27 PM

This is a "no name" sweet vermouth - Tribuno, which may well be a Gallo brand. I buy the smallest bottle I can find (then buy 2) I find sweet vermouth often goes flat on me before I use it up if I buy a 750 of it. I don't use much, but I usually do add a couple of different types of bitters - tonite was Peychauds and Angostura. And let's keep that Weller 12 to ourselves. They're putting too much good bourbon in fancy bottles and doubling the price - Weller 12 may be hard to keep under our hat.

Going to be pool time in a few hours. Not sure on what drink I'll make. I'll let any of you decide.

Paloma
Margarita
Montana Mule
Dirty Lemonade
Michelada

Please note that I will be outside and using plastic cups so nothing breaks if I drop it. Penguinz will obviously not vote for Montana Mule if I can't use copper then.

Grabbed it because I will drink pretty much any Boulevard product I can get out here. Head retention was practically nil. Very fizzy. I'm wondering if it hadn't sat on the shelf too long. (Although it was in a walk in when I bought it for what that's worth. And it's not skunky at all)

Good tasting Pilsner. Not exceptional, but very good.

None at all in Philly. I don't think even Monk's Cafe got any bottles, and I can go there and get a Fou Foune right now (albeit for $60).

You may want to consider some Rye whiskey instead of bourbon. Very "summery". :)

Ive never tried Rye's...I started to get really serious about scotches this last fall/winter.

You have a few brands I should try?

phisherman 06-20-2015 08:50 PM

Bulleit Rye is very good for the price. It will run you around $30 for a 750 ml. Rittenhouse Rye is also a very nice starter Rye and will run you around $25. It's bottled in bond, putting its ABV at exactly 50%, whereas Bulleit is around 45-47% ABV.

I like bourbon a lot but it's a very sweet spirit and I have found that Rye whiskey really hits the spot as its spicy nature makes it much easier to drink than bourbon, especially when drinking neat.

I know of Bulliet...I shall have to try that. I've 'graduated' to drinking my bourbon/scotch neat, so that's good to know. I have found that they run me really hot, so that's why I avoid them in the summer. But, I'll give the rye a shot.

Have two it at a bar at lunch. The first should be on the rocks, and the second in Coke or Diet Coke. I like it either way, but Kraken can be sipped unlike many Rums.

I won't expand on my night but it's been a decade and I can still can't shake the smell and taste of that rum. I remember it like it was yesterday. On the rocks would not be a good starting point.
