Hochevar and Davies are the best examples, but they are far from the only ones. Jeff Francoeur last season is another great example. Luke Hochevar passes the eye test with flying colors. If you watch him throw, you can see what SHOULD be there. But that's a good thing... it's the Royals' only hope of moving him, that someone buys into the eye test at this point. |

He's 25, is an extreme contact/luck pitcher, and has never shown any signs of being a strikeout pitcher at all. His already-atrocious K rate is likely to drop as he gets older, too - just like every other pitcher as he ages. I realize his FIP number looks slightly better (4.26 vs. 4.55 ERA), but the guy has enough experience now to believe he's someone who underperforms his metrics, just like Hochevar. |
He has a cool.baseball name.

Former Royal Ryan Freel committed suicide today.
http://deadspin.com/5970824/report-f...cide-at-age-36 Former utility player Ryan Freel, who broke into the majors with Toronto in 2001 and played the majority of his eight-year career with the Cincinnati Reds, committed suicide today. First Coast News in Jacksonville has the first report: First Coast News sports director Dan Hicken has learned that Ryan Freel, a Jacksonville native and former Major League Baseball has died at the age of 36. The cause of death is suicide. Freel played baseball at Sandalwood and Englewood High School. He played for five different MLB teams from 2001-2009. He is most known for his six-year tenure with the Cincinnati Reds. His career batting average was .268 he stole 143 bases in his career. Jeez , if he could survive playing for the Royals, you'd think he'd survive everything else

The Royals have signed Endy Chavez to a minor league contract. He was somewhat OK in 2011 (helped by a high babip) and atrocious in 2012 (but he had a hilariously-low babip)
He's probably about what we could expect Frenchy to do, except a lot cheaper. Along with Xavier Nady and Willy Taveras (both also signed minor league contracts) we now have an entire grab-bag of awful-to-underwhelming outfielders in Omaha. |
We got new BP hats. Yesssss.

Has to be said: And the O'ssification of the Royals continues...
Wow, ossification is actually a real word...my spellchecker didn't ask me "WTF is this shit?". Anyway. I'll always root for Tejada; hope he has a decent year left in him (and maybe some B12 left in him too) but Endy Chavez was absolutely useless last year. You know that army of faceless JAGs who seemingly were touched by Jebus and inexplicably produced for the 2012 O's? Yeah, Endy was evidently bent over tending to an ailment and the touch missed. He's one of those veterans who are good for OF depth though. |
Other reporters saying its a minor league deal.

Tejada is a pretty bad signing, even for utility infield. We should be able to find someone better than that.
Tejada did not play a single game in the majors in 2012, and it wasn't because he was hurt. edit: its a bad signing if he's getting a major league contract |

Apparently the reason why Tejada was signed was because he's doing well in winter ball. Maybe he's here to push Getz in spring training.

WTF Dayton? Migel Tejada? |
Tejada's old ass at 2B?? Can't be worse than who we have, right?

He plays softball tournaments routinely on weekends here in So-Cal. I've played in a few tournaments where he and his brother play on the same team. Needless to say, both beat the crap out of the ball (his brother hits farther in softball, by the way). So, yeah, maybe that qualifies him to replace Frenchy! |

A month after trading hurlers Jake Odorizzi and Mike Montgomery to the Rays as part of the deal that brought James Shields and Wade Davis to Kansas City, the Royals added some pitching depth on Thursday, signing right-hander Blaine Boyer to a Minor League contract for 2013.
Boyer, 31, was drafted by Atlanta in the third round of the 2000 Draft and went 9-14 with a 4.81 ERA in his 233 appearances with the Braves, Cardinals, D-backs and Mets during the 2005-09 seasons. The groundball specialist has allowed just 17 homers in 234 innings pitched. The Royals plan to announce the club's Major League camp non-roster invitees at a later date. Looked around at about 80 or so HOF ballots, if thats a representative sample, its depressing. I have to agree with Rany, the best possible outcome might be no one elected this year.
It doesn't look like Bagwell's getting in this year, the only one who might is Jack Morris, and he does not deserve it. |
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Red Sox, Rays, Nationals and Royals were all in attendance to watch Javier Vazquez in his Puerto Rican Winter League debut on Friday.
By all accounts, Vazquez looked very sharp during the outing. He pitched six shutout innings, allowing just three singles and no walks while racking up four strikeouts. His velocity sat consistently at 93 mph, touching as high as 95, and he maintained good command of the strike zone. Interest in the veteran right-hander should heat up after this terrific showing. THIS WOULD EXCITE ME GREATLY. Don't think we have the money though. |
Javier Vazquez!

Vazquez would be an excellent one-year signing. Just an excellent pick-up.
Shields Guthrie Santana Vazquez Davis That would be an excellent rotation upgrade. I mean... I was beating the drum to bring in three new guys for the rotation this offseason. If they compeletely make-over the rotation... wow. |
Def would love to get him on a one year deal

I bet it'll take 1 year, $10M for Vazquez.
MAYBE they could get him for $5M with incentives. |
I've always been a big Vazquez fan (so long as he's not pitching in NY). If he's got something left, I'd love to have him.

welp. The Royals got better, but according to at least one of the computers, they did not improve enough. The ZiPS projection is not fully out yet, but since the Royals "went all in", they released a sneak preview of KC.
Our rotation was upgraded by about 2 wins. Hopefully some of our hitters will bounce back a lot more than expected, and Frenchy will have a WAR on the correct side of zero. Billy Butler is projected to be our most valuable hitter, and James Shields is projected to be our most valuable pitcher. Quote:

instant fun poll: the Royals went all-in.
What two cards are we holding? To make it simple, assume we went all-in pre-flop, we bet first, with 5 players at the table. I'll say Queen-King suited. |
Ace Jack. Seems fitting.
