Yeah, there were definitely a few plot holes/things left unexplained like that... but you're right, it was well worth the price of admission |
I can't believe several of you hated Hereditary - I never get nightmares from watching movies - that movie freaked me TF out! I had the worse nightmare I've ever had after watching that!

I will touch cautiously on Hereditary w/o spoilers ohiobronco2
They used binaural beats and use IRL demonic historical names, additionally it'll scare you in a way that The Shining may have. It was so brilliant it still haunts me, I'm not sure I want to re-watch - for not other reason than the way it made me feel. |

Not sure if its already been mentioned but I'm loving pretty much everything so far from Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson (directors.) Small indie directors who can take very little and do a lot with it.
Resolution, Spring, and The Endless are all very good horror/suspense flicks. Also they all apparently relate in a loose way (and not a lame way like Cloverfield.) I highly recommend watching Resolution first and if you like that watch the other two in that order. It seems like the budget on each film got progressively better and so did each film... <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6-5uBCIA94c" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ur8UgpvRPXU" frameborder="0" allow="autoplay; encrypted-media" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

I think that the strongest aspect of the movie is how it blends the supernatural with the plausible and mundane. It's very current in the matters of gaslighting, miscommunication, and past resentments hindering current healing. I'm not going to be too concerned about spoilers, but I will be as vague as is tenable. So for those still seeking a pristine experience, this is for viewers who have seen it, not a recommendation for the uninitiated. Clearly, dark, otherworldly and determined forces are amassed against this family. But for a significant chunk of the movie it remains firmly in the shadows and on the periphery. This allows the narrative to stew in the poor communication within a family and the destruction it can cause even in the absence of malevolent forces. We are much more shook living for a moment inside the mindset of a kid responsible for his sister's death than we are unsettled by the fireworks at the end. We are most confused and discombobulated trying to do the calculus of the father trying to make sense of seeming nonsense, even as it grows more and more dangerous and destructive all around him, than we are straight shook by the bump scares and shadows. Not every family will be sacrificed to the ascension of a dark lord. But every family has secrets and strife and resentments bourne of shame and trauma. This makes it unsettlingly relatable as a family drama just as much as it is unsettlingly unrealistic as a supernatural tale. One thing I did like from a stylistic/atmospheric sense, in stark opposition to traditional jump scares, a lot of the horror in this movie is the view slowly realizing the gravity of what is happening. So many horrors lurk in nooks and crannies and corners unremarked until your senses register them. Related to that, the director makes ample use of suspense by visual through strict control of the camera blocking and movement. |

I watched Deadbeat at Dawn last night. Definitely more exploitation than horror, but if you're into cheesy, low budget, 80s gang/karate era flicks, it's pretty entertaining. It starts a little slow but the last 1/3 is like a vastly lower budget, more laughable, gorier John Wick.
|
If you love novels by Stephen King, I can recommend new "It".

What's about Pet Sematary?
|
Ever since I heard about Ex Machina a couple of years ago I've been wanting to see it, it's a 2014 release. I've got all the premium channels on Directv and it's never played. I've was just flipping thru Netflix and under new additions there it was, couldn't believe.
I finally got to see it and it didn't disappoint. I'm sure everybody has heard about it by now. It's robots and AI (artificial intelligence). It keeps you guessing the whole way through about how it's going to turn out, it has a twist ending. Highly recommend this film if you're into sci-fi. https://m.media-amazon.com/images/M/...82,268_AL_.jpg |
Finally watched Hereditary last night and thought it was great. Toni Collette played about as good of role in a horror movie as I've seen. I wavered between wanting to do her like Kareem Hunt or Peter North throughout the entire movie. The camera work was fantastic as well. Really well done movie.

Rented "Mandy" with Nic Cage last night, went in expecting something far out and got it... but it wasnt quite what I was expecting
The basic story sounded excellent, a genuine satanic cult kills a northwest loggers girlfriend and he goes on a revenge killing spree It delivers on the tripping balls aspect that reviews promised, but could have been so much better IMO... was hoping (reviews seemed to promise this) for a deep dive into the supernatural that exists around serious cults, but it ended up being more of a late 70s - early 80s camp and gore, grindhouse kind of thing with animated elements similar to Heavy Metal and Natural Born Killers Wouldnt say I felt cheated, it was absolutely a beautiful visual nightmare... but I was hoping for much more of a supernatural aspect to it, something that took the world of demon conjuring and the powers of real witchcraft to a new level |
I recommend 'The Bird Box' on netflix. It's a weird mix of A Quiet Place, The Mist, and The Happening among others. Good cast too

Watch Bird Box, get woke
https://www.theroot.com/netflixs-bir...ont-1831345159 EDIT: As for the movie itself, IMO it's a negligible wisp of a basic cable thing. Not bad per se, just shoestring [particularly given the cast] and a little rote. It's also a bit of a Rorschach test, as evidenced by the piffle above. The 'horror'
Spoiler!
So people are primed to imprint upon it whatever suits their current obsession. A lot of it is more tension than horror, and some of it is downright laughter inducing. I don't want to be too mean about it, because it's not aggressively horrible, but I don't think it was time well spent. |
Finally got around to seeing "hereditary" last night.
Blown away - thought the directing, pacing, cinematography (and acting) were all top-notch. legitimate scares....somewhat unpredictable....and several WTF moments. I know some didnt like the pacing, but I thought it was very polished....intense would probably be the best way to describe it. Got the similar dread feeling that I got watching movies like the exorcist or the shining. Definitely spooked me and it stays with you after. |
Watched "The Monster" last night (currently streaming on Netflix). I put it on thinking this would be either:
1. Something to fall asleep to or 2. An awesome indie monster movie. It was neither, but it was a riveting watch. The acting was top notch, the context was very real-world oriented. I thought it was very well made. BUT...it is NOT a horror movie. It's barely a monster movie even though there is a physical monster that gets plenty of screen time. Judging by the trailer, Hollywood tried to sell this as another monster movie, and that's a goddamn shame because it's not. The movie was more drama than horror. The movie was much more about the tumultuous relationship between a young mother (who struggles with alcoholism) and her young daughter. The monster component was certainly there, but more side story than main. I thought the character development and the relationship between mother and daughter was executed to perfection. If you ever struggled with an alcoholic parent you may find that this movie hits too close to home. If you're looking for a traditional horror movie this aint it. This movie has more depth and less gore/jump scares. If you want a great drama with some heart breaking moments and a dash of horror/monster on the side then give this a shot. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ly11BJP8Heg" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

I recommend Belzebuth on Shudder (might be on netflix as well). Brutal from start to finish.

This is an old thread however I haven't seen anyone mention a sort of remake of the 1958 classic of The Fly.
The 1986 The Fly is still one of my favorite movies. I watched it again the other day and it still holds up pretty well. Having to do everything with practical effects lends a sort of realism that can't be matched with CGI. There aren't any scare you out of your seat moments however the last 20 minutes has enough blood and gore to make up for it. I watched a few youtube videos of the deleted scenes; personally, I think they should have kept the fusion and trash can scenes in the movie. |

Antrum: The Deadliest Film Ever Made
Starts like a faux documentary about a 70s horror film that caused tragic deaths to viewers afterwards and was pulled from theaters. Then they show the purported movie. Its pretty fun and has a really nice giallo vibe that's both visual and aural. There's one crazy scene that's super disturbing. All in all its an entertaining retro horror flick. Nothing mind blowing horror wise or even scary, but rather more visually disturbing. Its available on Prime |

Watch Constantine movie 👌
|
"Constantine" is more an action film than a real horror. Better watch Nightmare on Elm Street or say Scream.
|
Talking about horrors with some philosophical sense I would recommend Saw (the 1st 2 films).
|
Started The Last Drive-in With Joe Bob Briggs last night on Shudder. They roll out a horror classic each week including intermissions with Joe Bob giving info on directors/actors and the movie itself. Pretty cool. Reminds me a bit of USA Up All Night that I grew up watching.
Anyway, the first film was Tourist Trap from '79. Kind of a pre-80s slasher pioneer. Has hot body butterface Tonya Roberts in it who some may recognize. Not a great movie by any means, but it was cool to see the foundation of a lot of slasher movie tricks that made the rounds throughout the 80s. So far enjoying the Shudder app. |
Blood Vessel on Shudder is pretty good for what it is. Some clear "The Thing" influences as well as some questionable costume work but some good character dynamics and dialogue. I enjoyed it.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Anyone seen Hereditary? Holy shit, what a great flick.
It’s a slow burn, but creepy as hell. |
I watched The Dark and Wicked or whatever based on someone in this thread's recommendation. It was pretty creepy. It gave me the same type of vibe I got when I watched the Paranormal Activity flicks. It was super tense during night scenes and I couldn't wait til morning for some relief.

Watched Blood Vessel yesterday. It was post Thanksgiving meal so I nodded off a bit in the middle but it was an enjoyable flick. I mostly appreciated the depiction of vampires as ancient creatures from hell as opposed to snooty fashionistas. The movie made me want to revisit Dead Snow.
Also watched 30 Miles From Nowhere which was meh. Old college friends come back to Wisconsin for a friends funeral and shenanigans ensue. It had potential with some attempts at witty dialogue but ultimately fell flat due to a story that never really made sense and was hard to follow. Easy pass if on the fence. |
Oddly enough, I also watched The Thing (2011) which is a prequel to the 1983 version. The end of this one is literally Lars chasing after the Thing-dog to the other base.
It was enjoyable enough. |
I don't know if it would be considered a horror movie but i think it can fit the bill but The Warriors is going be on MOREMAX at 10:50

An American Werewolf in London (1981)
|
The Beyond (1981)
|
Watched Castle Freak last night which I recommend. Adaption of Lovecraft's The Outsider that was filmed in an actual Italian castle.
Jonathan Fuller's role as the freak is superb and there's a couple really disturbing scenes throughout.

Watched "hell house" last week, then got hooked and watched the two sequels.
Pretty good "found footage" style horror film about a group of 20-somethings creating a haunted house in an old hotel. Some legitimate creepiness to it, for sure. Enjoyed all three actually. |

The Queen of Black Magic (2020)
Thought this was pretty decent if you're into Asian or more specifically Indonesian horror flicks. Its well filmed and acted. The computer generated violence scenes are clean and superb. My only knock is its a little slow to develop and a bit boring in the beginning and middle as the story comes together. Still there was more to like than dislike with this one. |
Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream are the 2 classic horror movies that come to mind when you think about this kind of movies.

Anyway, it’s a slow burn, creepy, anxiety inducing, well filmed and delivered horror. No tits that I recall, more mentally disturbing kills than stalk and slash gore. Going off recollection here but feel it had A Winters Bone disturbing kind of feel with some evil spirit ghost play. I enjoyed it. EDIT: You should get Shudder |
Yeah, you did post about that one. I watched it on your recommendation.
It was pretty creepy overall. I wasn't upset that I spent a couple hours watching it. |

Was flipping the channels and caught BrightBurn. Not very scary and very predictable. How did DC not sue them as it's a direct ripoff of SuperMan; right down to the small town in Kansas.
|
So... this was a creepy surprise. Kind of a slow start, but wow by the end I was really impressed. Pretty well done.
