To prep for the draft, your Chiefs picks are:
#18 (1st round) #49 (2nd round) #98 (3rd compensatory - can't trade out) #118 (4th round) #172 (5th compensatory - can't trade out) #173 (5th compensatory - can't trade out) #217 (6th compensatory - can't trade out) #233 (7th round) PLUS Your choice of #154 (5th round) OR Guard Ben Grubbs PLUS Your choice of #76 (3rd round) OR #80 (3rd round) plus #193 (6th round) |
Just want to go on record that my 7th round pick will be La'el Collins.

Okay, after a day of thought, here's my draft:
1st round (#18) - CB Marcus Peters I was really tempted to go with Shane Ray here, but I found a non-drug-addicted substitute for Ray further down. The only other consideration here was C Cameron Erving, but since I needed both CB and C, I went with the higher-skill position. 2nd round (#49) - OLB Nate Orchard I like anyone who puts up 18 sacks his senior year, and I could use an OLB upgrade. This was a little bit of a luxury pick, but not much. I also considered Mitch Morse (desperate at C), T Jake Fisher, and OLB Randy Gregory, and to a lesser extent C Hroniss Grasu and DE Owamagbe Odhigizuwa. But Orchard was my guy. 3rd round (#80). CB Steve Nelson. First off, I declined the move-up offer to #76, so I keep my #193 pick and pick at #80. This was a really, really hard pick. Nelson was a bit of a luxury since I'd already drafted Peters, but I like the pick and was really thin at CB. However, I looked really hard at TE Tyler Kroft, OT Chaz Green, DT Carl Davis, G Daryl Williams, and a little bit at ILB Paul Dawson. This was a really hard pick. 3rd round (#98) - OT TJ Clemmings Pretty easy pick here. Really didn't consider anybody else, because I'm desperate at OT. I've invested a lot of picks there and didn't want to give up another high pick, so Clemmings is my desperate gamble there this year. 4th round (#118 - Traded) - Okay, I'm using my trade down here. The #118 pick is worth 58 points, and at a 35% discount that comes to 37.7 points. I'm trading down with the Vikings for their #146 pick (33 points), their #228 pick (2 points), and their #232 pick (2 points). The 2 point figures are because the draft chart only goes to #224, so I just used the value of the #224 pick. (Traded - #146 pick) - QB Brett Hundley My philosophy is to keep taking QBs every year, and Hundley seemed like the best value. It was hard because I'm desperate for a C and strongly considered C Shaq Mason, and I also wanted DE Marcus Hardison. But getting Hundley also let me trade down. 5th round (#154) - I am accepting the trade for G Ben Grubbs. 5th round (#172) - FS Derron Smith. I need help at FS and keep trying to get it in the lower picks. Let's try again. I strongly considered OT Tyrus Thompson here, as well as CB Charles Gaines and our own TE James O'Shaugnessy. 5th round (#173) - DT Michael Bennett Seemed like a great value pick here. I can use him at my 3-4 DE position. Really no other options here, because I was targeting him. 6th round (#193) - C Andy Gallik I really need a starting center, but had too many other holes to fill. So Andy, you're going to be starting for me this year. Let's hope you play well. No other choices here because I'd targeted him as a value pick. 6th round (#217) - TE Ben Koyack I need a backup TE and he seemed like a good value. Lots of options here, but I had lots of 7th round picks, so keep reading. I also considered TE Gerald Christian. 7th round (#228, acquired in trade down) - FS Gerod Holliman. I need a starting FS desperately, but had too many other holes. Hopefully Gerod or Derron can hold it down or one of the strong safeties on my roster can move back 7th round (#232, acquired in trade down) - OT Corey Robinson A long shot, but I liked him and my OT position is a mess right now. He'll have a chance to compete. 7th round (#233) - CB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu. I figure I can stash him on my roster and hope his knee heels. I probably should use one of these picks on La'el Collins, but I didn't. You know, just in case. I liked a lot of the late prospects. |
My current post-draft roster is below. I'll pick up some more guys as the Chiefs sign training camp guys and veteran free agents.
Rookies are shown in green. QB Russell Wilson (Seahawks) Geno Smith (Jets) Brett Hundley (#4/146 - Packers) Terrelle Pryor Tyler Bray HB Jamaal Charles C.J. Spiller. (Bills) Denard Robinson (Jaguars) FB/H-Back Trey Millard, FB (49ers). WR Jeremy Maclin Dwayne Bowe Kendall Wright (Titans) Donte Moncrief (Colts). Hmm, I'm not sure where along the line I cut Hussain Abdullah, but I'll just assume that I did.

1st Round (#18) - DE Shane Ray (Broncos)
Almost took Marcus Peters, but pass rushers available at #18 are more scarce than good corners. 2nd Round (#49) - TE Maxx Williams (Ravens) I wanted a pass receiving threat of some kind. Considered Lockett but ultimately landed here. 3rd Round (#76) - CB P.J. Williams (Saints) Hated seeing Lockett off the board when the Chiefs picked here. This CB was rated high in my paper draft mag, so now he's on my team. 3rd Round (#98) - OT T.J. Clemmings (Vikings) I'm short on OTs since I didn't accept the Fisher pick a few years ago. I considered G Tre Jackson here, but the fact that OT was a "need" sealed it. 4th Round (#118) - C Max Garcia (Broncos) Another need pick. With this, Clemmings, and Grubbs I feel pretty good about having addressed OL. 5th Round (#154) - I am accepting the trade for G Ben Grubbs. 5th Round (#172) - OLB D.J. Alexander Okay, losing interest at this point, so whatever. 5th Round (#173) - TE James Shaughnessy 6th Round (#217) - DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches 7th Round (#233) - OT La'el Collins It is utter, full-bore insanity that this guy wasn't drafted. I'll take a possible Pro Bowl OT for free with a garbage pick that would have otherwise been almost assuredly wasted on camp fodder. If I had been working in an NFL war room on Saturday I would have gotten myself fired over this one. They'd have dragged me out kicking and screaming. |
So, my updated roster...

I was really tempted to go with Shane Ray, and was feeling really bad about it. Then I found Orchard and liked him a lot. We'll have to see if Orchard or Ray ends up better.

Actually most of my cuts were no-brainers. I'll just have to add back a few Albert Wilson/Frankie Hammond types.

So am I correct that we are all screwed by not having known about West?

I was sure that CJ Spiller was going to do well for me. He hasn't been an outright bust, but I would've liked more production from a first-round pick. |
How did my team do this year? Let's post a "Year in Review" summary.
Rookies are shown in green. QB Russell Wilson (Seahawks) Geno Smith (Jets) Brett Hundley (#4/146 - Packers) I'm strong at QB, though my depth could be better. It's possible that Hundley may be my #2 QB next year. Draft needs: depth. HB Jamaal Charles Denard Robinson (Jaguars) C.J. Spiller. (Bills) This should've been a position of strength, but Jamaal got hurt. Robinson and Spiller were okay in spot duty. Draft needs: need to think about a HBoTF given Jamaal's situation. FB/H-Back (None) Pretty much using a TE at this position given the modern NFL. Draft needs: none, really. WR Jeremy Maclin Kendall Wright (Titans) Dwayne Bowe Albert Wilson Donte Moncrief (Colts). Strong here. Wright got hurt a lot, so Moncrief moved up to my #2 spot. Great depth, even if Bowe was a bust. Draft needs: None. TE Travis Kelce (Chiefs) Anthony Fasano Ben Koyack (#6/217 - Jaguars) No complaints here at the top two. Koyack got no action at all, though. Draft needs: A TE2 to eventually replace Fasano. OT Menelik Watson (Raiders) Morgan Moses, OT (Redskins) TJ Clemmings (#3/98 - Vikings) Ryan Harris, RT Corey Robinson (#7/232 - Lions) Cyrus Kouandjio, OT (Bills) I turned a weakness into a strength here, or at least adequacy. Watson was out for the year in preseason and I had no established starters, but my second year guy Moses started all 16 games, as did rookie TJ Clemmings and journeyman Ryan Harris. Kouandjio was at least active and got a couple of starts, while rookie Robinson got no action. They're all right tackles so I still need to upgrade, but I at least have depth now. Moses may be the only guy returning to a starter position unless Watson can finally do the job. Draft needs: Starting left tackle. G Alex Boone (49ers) Ben Grubbs (Acquired via trade for the #5/154 pick) Disaster here. All my great depth disappeared last offseason. Boone played only 13 games and Grubbs only 7, so I would've been moving tackles inside to fill the gap. Draft needs: Starting left guard and depth. C Andy Gallik (#6/193 - Titans) I knew I was in trouble here going into the season with only a late-round rookie, but Gallik surprised me, getting 8 starts. This was kind of a win even though not a strength. However, he only started due to an injury so may be a backup again next year. Draft needs: Starting center. K Cairo Santos, K Best kicker in the league. Draft needs: none. P Dustin Colquitt Best punter in the league. Draft needs: none. LS James Winchester Kind of shaky this year relative to expectations. Draft needs: none. Whoever the Chiefs end up with will be on my roster. FS Reshad Jones (Dolphins) Jordan Poyer (Eagles) Derron Smith (#5/172 - Bengals) Jones remains a high performer for me, and Poyer actually got playing time and a couple of starts as my patience pays off. Smith saw only special teams action, so we'll see. Draft needs: none. SS Tyvon Branch Baccari Rambo (Redskins) While neither was a full-year starter, both guys saw a lot of action this year. It's not a strength, but I was finally able to say that this position wasn't an overt weakness. Draft needs: Full-time starter, but it's not a high priority. CB Sean Smith Marcus Peters (#1/18 - Chiefs) Jamell Fleming Steve Nelson (#3/80 - Chiefs) Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (#7/233 - Browns) Man, am I glad that I drafted Peters. My depth isn't great, but my starters are solid. I hope that Fleming and Nelson develop, and knew that Ekpre was a long-term hold since he started training camp on IR. Draft needs: You can always use another good CB, but the need is mostly depth. OLB Tamba Hali AJ Klein (Panthers) Nate Orchard (#2/49 - Browns) Trevor Reilly (Jets) Justin March Hali continues to hold up this unit, though Orchard came on as a strong starter and Klein is a strong backup. Reilly got special teams action and March was an IR guy. Draft need: I really need a #1 pass rusher to replace Hali at some point. ILB Derrick Johnson Rey Maualuga (Bengals) Josh Mauga Zach Brown (Titans) DJ was great, of course, and Maualuga barely beat out Mauga for the starter job. Brown always seems to hang on and produce. Great depth here. Draft need: none. DE Star Lotulelei (Panthers) Mike DeVito Ropati Pitoitua Alex Carrington (Bills) Nick Williams Star isn't the dominator I was hoping for, but he holds the position down along with DeVito. The other guys are all depth. Draft need: Could use a DEoTF here. NT Brandon Williams (Ravens) Daniel McCullers (Steelers) Michael Bennett (#5/173 - Jaguars) Brandon Williams seized this spot and was a strong point on my D this year. McCullers is gigantic depth at this point. Bennett is depth that I hope will develop. Draft need: depth. Overall grades: Offense: Strong at the skill positions, though Wilson ran for his life behind a weak and inexperienced line and Jamaal's injury hurt the running game. Grade: B. Special Teams: Followed the Chiefs. Grade: A. Defense: I'm finally building some good talent in the backfield, but my LB corps is aging and my line investments are not paying off well. I can't generate a pass rush at all other than Hali. It's a serviceable defense that improved over last year, but it's probably only average. Grade: C. |
Draft needs going into 2016
High priority: Starting LG Starting C Pass-rushing OLB Moderate priority: Eventual starting HB Starting DE (again!) Starting LT (again!) Starting SS QB depth Low priority: Starting FB CB depth Developmental ILB Nose tackle depth #3 TE Non-priority: WR, K, P, LS, FS |
QB
Alex Smith Brock Osweiler (Broncos) Aaron Murray Geno Smith (Jets) An uninspiring group. Thankfully I swallowed my pride several years ago and accepted the Alex Smith trade I didn't like or I'd be royally screwed. RB Jamaal Charles Anthony Sherman Yep, probably need to draft an RB. WR Jeremy Maclin Tavon Austin (Rams) Rishard Matthews (Dolphins) De'Anthony Thomas Frankie Hammond, Jr. Albert Wilson I think I'm doing a tad better than the Chiefs here, but with all the WRs I've drafted I hoped to be doing better. TE Travis Kelce Maxx Williams (Ravens) James Shaughnessy Don't know how or why I missed the Demetrius Harris train, but I did. OT T.J. Clemmings (Vikings) Donald Stephenson La’el Collins (Cowboys) Meh G David DeCastro (Steelers) Ben Grubbs Laurent Duvernay-Tardiff Holding my own here. C Max Garcia (Broncos) Need some help here. K Cairo Santos P Dustin Colquitt S Eric Berry George Iloka (Bengals) Hussain Abdullah Kelcie McCray (Seahawks) Chiefs are doing a bit better than me. CB P.J. Williams (Saints) Phillip Gaines Sean Smith Jordan Poyer (Browns) Ugh. OLB Tamba Hali Justin Houston Shane Ray (Broncos) D.J. Alexander Dee Ford Shane, I'm gonna need more. ILB Derrick Johnson Vontaze Burflict (Bengals) Josh Mauga I was so proud, watching that Bengals/Steelers game. DE Allen Bailey Mike DeVito NT Cam Thomas (Steelers) Alameda Ta'amu (Cardinals) Rakeem Nunez-Roches Man I spent heavy here during the Pioli years. Total backfire. |

So wazu, I'm guessing that your draft priorities will be HB, OT, and NT, and maybe CB?
We both got lucky with Clemmings at OT, but at the same time it sounds like he didn't exactly solidify himself into the position. And it sure is hard to find defensive ends, isn't it? I keep whiffing at that position. I don't know how many you've drafted, but I've spent some capital at DE and OLB and can't seem to find starters, other than moving Lotulelei out there. |
Just for fun, I went back and looked at all of my drafts since 2009. Here they are:
2009 Draft Round 1 - 3rd Pick - Mark Sanchez - QB - USC (went to Jets) Round 2 - 34th Pick - Rey Maualuga - ILB - USC (went to Bengals) Round 3 - 67th Pick - Derrick Williams - WR - Penn State (went to Lions) Round 4 - 102nd Pick - D.J. Moore - CB - Vanderbilt (went to Bears) Round 5 - 139th Pick - Duke Robinson - G - Oklahoma (went to Panthers) Round 5 - 175th Pick - Myron Pryor - DT - Kentucky (went to Patriots) Round 7 - 212th Pick - Zack Follett - OLB - California (went to Lions) Round 7 - 237th Pick - No pick - Rejected Trade Round 7 - 256th Pick - Alex Boone - OT - Ohio State (not drafted, signed by 49ers) Grade: C-. Maualuga and Boone are both starters to this day, and I got a few good years out of Sanchez and Moore. I probably shouldn't have cut Sanchez. 2010 Draft Round 1 - 5th Pick - RB C.J. Spiller. (Bills) Round 2 - 36th Pick - QB Jimmy Clausen (Panthers) Round 3 - 68th Pick - DE Alex Carrington (Bills). Round 4 - 102nd Pick - OT Bruce Campbell (Raiders) Round 5 - 136th Pick - FS Kendrick Lewis (Chiefs) Round 5 - 142nd Pick - SS Reshad Jones (Dolphins) Round 6 - 173rd Pick - WR Dezmon Brisco (Bengals) Round 7 - 212th Pick - LB Dekoda Watson (Buccaneers) Grade: B-. Jones was a great steal, and Spiller and Carrington are both backups with the team. Watson played for me for five years. 2011 Draft Round 1 - 26th pick DE Da'Quan Bowers (Buccaneers) Round 2 - 55th pick C Rodney Hudson (Chiefs) Round 3 - 70th pick WR Leonard Hankerson (Redskins) Round 4 - 112th pick WR Greg Salas (Rams) Round 4 - 118th pick K Alex Henery (Eagles) Round 5 - 135th pick SS Shiloh Keo (Texans) Round 5 - 140th pick OT Jason Pinkston (Browns) Round 5 - 158th pick OLB Chris Carter (Steelers) Round 6 - 199th pick OLB Bruce Miller (49ers) Round 7 - 223rd pick G Lee Ziemba (Panthers) Round 7 - 228th pick DT Lawrence Guy (Packers) Grade: F. Hudson started for me until he left, and Henery and Pinkston started for a couple of years, while Hankerson was a good backup for a while. I gave up on Guy too early and gave up on Bowers too late. Nobody in this draft remains on the roster. 2012 Draft Round 1 - 20th pick WR Kendall Wright (Titans) Round 2 - 52nd pick Zach Brown (Titans) Round 3 - 75th pick QB Russell Wilson (Seahawks) Round 4 - 125th pick OLB Ronnell Lewis (Lions) Round 5 - 164th pick DE Jonathan Massaquoi (Falcons) Round 6 - 192nd pick SS Charles Mitchell (Falcons) Round 7 - 224th pick CB Alphonso Dennard (Patriots) Round 7 - 238th pick WR Junior Hemingway (Chiefs) Grade: A. I got my quarterback in the third round and Wright is a starter. Dennard had a couple of good years and Brown is still on the roster. 2013 Draft Round 1 - 13th Pick - Star Lotulelei, DT (Panthers) Round 2 - 34th Pick - Geno Smith, QB (Jets) Round 2 - 39th Pick - Menelik Watson, OT (Raiders) Round 3 - 63rd Pick - Travis Kelce, TE (Chiefs) Round 3 - 72nd Pick - Brandon Williams, DT (Ravens) Round 3 - 96th Pick - Tyler Wilson, QB (Raiders) Round 4 - 99th Pick - Denard Robinson, RB/KR (Jaguars) Round 5 - 134th Pick - Jesse Williams, DT (Seahawks) Round 5 - 141st Pick - A.J. Klein, ILB (Panthers) Round 6 - 170th Pick - Bacarri Rambo, FS (Redskins) Round 6 - 204th Pick - Jordan Poyer, CB (Eagles) Grade: A. Kelse, Williams, and Lotulelei are all strong starters. Smith, Watson, Robinson, Klein, Rambo, and Poyer are all still on the roster. 2014 Draft Round 2 - 44th Pick - Cyrus Kouandjio, OT (Bills) Round 2 - 56th Pick - Morgan Moses, OT (Redskins) Round 3 - 87th Pick - Donte Moncrief, WR (Colts) Round 4 - 124th Pick - David Yankey, G (Vikings). Round 5 - 153rd Pick - Ed Reynolds, FS (Eagles) Round 5 - 163rd Pick - Ronald Powell, OLB (Saints). Round 6 - 200th Pick - Daniel McCullers, NT (Steelers). Round 7 - 221st Pick - Trevor Reilly, OLB (Jets). Round 7 - 238th Pick - Trey Millard, FB (49ers). Grade: C-. Moses is a starter on the rise and Moncrief is a very strong backup. Kouandjio has struggled. McCullers and Reilly are still on my roster. 2015 Draft Round 1 - 18th Pick - CB Marcus Peters (Chiefs) Round 2 - 49th Pick - OLB Nate Orchard (Browns) Round 3 - 80th Pick. CB Steve Nelson (Chiefs) Round 4 - 98th Pick - OT TJ Clemmings (Vikings) (Traded Round 5 - 146th pick) - QB Brett Hundley (Packers) Round 5 - 154th Pick - I am accepting the trade for G Ben Grubbs. Round 5 - 172nd Pick - FS Derron Smith (Bengals) Round 5 - 173rd Pick - DT Michael Bennett (Jaguars) Round 6 - 193rd Pick - C Andy Gallik (Titans) Round 6 - 217th Pick - TE Ben Koyack (Jaguars) Round 7 - 228th Pick, acquired in trade down - FS Gerod Holliman (Steelers) Round 7 - 232nd Pick, acquired in trade down - OT Corey Robinson (Lions) Round 7 - 233rd Pick - CB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (Browns) Grade: A. It's early, but Peters is a big winner and Orchard is looking good. Clemmings and Gallik started as rookies, albeit due to injuries, and Bennett is showing promise. |

I'd love to get in on this as well, looks fun. Can't believe I've never read this thread...

We did a few special things to rosters when we started this several years ago, but at this point I'll just wave my hands at them. Start monitoring the thread as draft day approaches, and I'll post up the available picks and any trades to accept or reject. Then in training camp you'll finalize a 53-man roster and go from there. I'm glad you're interested. The game starts slow because your roster doesn't diverge quickly, but after several years it's really cool to see how the team changes. |
I may have to try this, but I'm worried that I'd pull a Rainman and make my team demonstrably worse than Scott Pioli did.
I mean, congrats on the Russell Wilson thing and all, but Hankerson and Wright instead of Houston and Poe....that's not so good. |

Bowers is probably my biggest regret. I shuffled my draft around to get him, thinking he would be a cheap star and that didn't work out at all. CJ Spiller is a bummer, too. I thought he would blow the place up. He's still around and playing, but just as a bit player. Feel free to join in. It's fun to look back once you get a few years under your belt. |

I'm surprised by how few 'pre-draft' trade downs I've seen going backwards in the draft. Seems like most of you are content simply eating the discount and moving down. |
So do we just start with the Chiefs roster as of the draft? How do we handle FAs?
|

You'll get any free agents who arrive for the Chiefs. |

In real life, I hate trading down. But in this game it's worth it sometimes even if you have to give the discount. At least, that's the case in my opinion. |
Yeah I'm still bummed about missing the draft year of Russell Wilson he would of been my pick in the third round I loved him in that draft. Got to busy that year to participate and was forced to take the Chiefs draft. Oh well no use in crying now I have to hope a QB I like falls probably . Thought geno was gonna be a lot better than he turned out.
|
So for now what's the roster size? Is it 90 like during the normal NFL offseason? We just have to get down to 53 before the start of the regular season.

Dang it, we're losing Sean Smith, too. That's going to hurt. I've got some gaping holes to fill.

Okay, your draft picks are:
1-28 (28th pick) 2-28 (59th pick) 4-28 (126th pick) 5-25 (162nd pick) 5-28 (165th pick) - If you have Kelcie McCray on your roster, you can accept this trade and get this pick or reject it and keep McCray. If you're a new player, you can have this pick. 6-28 (203rd pick) 7-28 (249th pick) If you're new, here are the rules for new teams: 1. You'll start out with all of the Chiefs players on their roster EXCEPT the ones that they draft in 2016. 2. You'll draft your own players with the Chiefs' picks. You can take the Chiefs players if you want, but there's no need to do so. It's an honor system, but you should post your draft as soon as possible after the NFL draft. If you do not post a draft before training camp starts, you'll be assigned the Chiefs' actual draft. The most fair process is that you'll post your draft within a week of the actual NFL draft. As an aside, I like to discuss who I was considering with each pick so I can go back later and kick or congratulate myself. 3. You can trade up or down before or after the draft, but see the rules. If you move before the draft, you can just use the famous Jimmy Johnson draft chart. If you move up or down after the draft, you'll have to pay a big penalty as described in the opening post. We do this because after the draft you'll have perfect information about the picks needed to draft your favorite prospect, so it would be easy to game the system. If you want to trade up or trade down, post it and I'll give you an example and some calculations. 4. At the end of training camp, you'll cut your roster to 53 players. There is no injured reserve and no practice squad. You get only 53 players. Again, it's an honor system, but the general rule is to build your roster in a similar matter to an NFL team, so don't keep 8 quarterbacks and 1 offensive lineman. 5. At the end of the season, we review our teams and chat about what we did right or wrong, and where our strengths and weaknesses like. We don't do any competitions or anything at this point. It's just for discussion. |
So here's the story. You'll start out with these picks:
1-28 (28th pick) 2-28 (59th pick) 4-28 (126th pick) 5-25 (162nd pick) 5-28 (165th pick) - If you have Kelcie McCray on your roster, you can accept this trade and get this pick or reject it and keep McCray. If you're a new player, you can have this pick. 6-28 (203rd pick) 7-28 (249th pick) The Chiefs made two trade downs. If you accept the first one (49ers) and reject the second one (Buccaneers), you get the following picks. 2-6 (37th pick) 2-28 (59th pick) 4-7 (105th pick) 4-28 (126th pick) 5-25 (162nd pick) 5-28 (165th pick) - If you have Kelcie McCray on your roster, you can accept this trade and get this pick or reject it and keep McCray. If you're a new player, you can have this pick. 6-3 (178th pick) 6-28 (203rd pick) If you reject the first one (49ers) and accept the second one (Buccaneers), you get the following picks: 1-28 (28th pick) 3-11 (74th pick) 4-8 (106th pick) 4-28 (126th pick) 5-25 (162nd pick) 5-28 (165th pick) - If you have Kelcie McCray on your roster, you can accept this trade and get this pick or reject it and keep McCray. If you're a new player, you can have this pick. 6-28 (203rd pick) 7-28 (249th pick) If you accept both trades, you get: 2-6 (37th pick) 3-11 (74th pick) 4-7 (105th pick) 4-8 (106th pick) 4-28 (126th pick) 5-25 (162nd pick) 5-28 (165th pick) - If you have Kelcie McCray on your roster, you can accept this trade and get this pick or reject it and keep McCray. If you're a new player, you can have this pick. 6-3 (178th pick) 6-28 (203rd pick) Of course, you can do your own trade up and trade down scenarios too, subject to the rules that require a discount. Let me know if you're interested and I can calculate your trading points. |
Okay, we have some complicated trade decisions this year. Here's the Duluth scenario.
First, we don't have Kelcie McCray on the roster so we can't trade him. Therefore, we start out with the following picks: 1-28 (28th pick) 2-28 (59th pick) 4-28 (126th pick) 5-25 (162nd pick) 6-28 (203rd pick) 7-28 (249th pick) We will reject the first Chiefs trade down scenario with the 49ers, and we will accept the second one with the Buccaneers (trading our 59th pick for their 74th and 106th picks). This puts us with the following picks: 1-28 (28th pick) 3-11 (74th pick) 4-8 (106th pick) 4-28 (126th pick) 5-25 (162nd pick) 6-28 (203rd pick) 7-28 (249th pick) We will now initiate a trade down with the Bears, as follows: We give up our 1-28 (28th pick) valued at 660 points x .65 = 429 points. In return, we get their 2-25 (56th pick), 4-15 (113th pick), and 6-10 (185th pick). Those picks are valued at 340+68+17.4 points = 425.4 points. That puts our picks as follows: 2-25 (56th pick) 3-11 (74th pick) 4-8 (106th pick) 4-15 (113th pick) 4-28 (126th pick) 5-25 (162nd pick) 6-10 (185th pick) 6-28 (203rd pick) 7-28 (249th pick) We will now make a trade up with the Bengals, as follows: We give up our 5-25 (162nd pick) and 6-28 (203rd pick). These are valued at 26.6*.85 points and 10.2*.85 points for a total of 31.27 points. In return, we will receive their 5-24 (161st pick) and 7-24 (245th pick). These are valued at 27 and 2 points for a total of 29 points. This now puts us with the following picks: 2-25 (56th pick) 3-11 (74th pick) 4-8 (106th pick) 4-15 (113th pick) 4-28 (126th pick) 5-24 (161st pick) 6-10 (185th pick) 7-24 (245th pick) 7-28 (249th pick) These trades follow all the rules because: - I'm initiating no more than one trade up. - I'm initiating no more than one trade down (other than a Chiefs trade that I'm accepting) - When trading down, I'm discounting my draft points by 35 percent and gaining no more than two additional picks and not gaining draft points. - When trading up, I'm discounting my draft points by 15 percent and gaining no more than two additional picks and not gaining draft points. So those are my draft choices now. In the next post I'll detail my draft. |

I'll create a team.
Sacramento Sad Sacks. |
DJ and I like a couple of the same guys. Barring a last-minute change I'll also be drafting Billings and Westerman.
|
Per my earlier post, I have the following picks:
2-25 (56th pick) 3-11 (74th pick) 4-8 (106th pick) 4-15 (113th pick) 4-28 (126th pick) 5-24 (161st pick) 6-10 (185th pick) 7-24 (245th pick) 7-28 (249th pick) Here are my picks: 2-25 (56th pick) - G Cody Whitehair (Bears) I don't know how my interior line collapsed so badly last year, but I need help. I debated not trading down and taking either Chris Jones or Robert Nkemdiche on the DL, or CB Xavien Howard or DE Noah Spence. It came down to Jones or Whitehair, and Whitehair seems like a safe pick in a big area of need. 3-11 (74th pick) - CB Kendall Fuller (Redskins) This pick came down to Fuller or Shilique Calhoun. I need a DE badly, but I'm in a 3-4 and wasn't sure that Calhoun would fit without a big talent shuffle. I briefly considered DTs Adolphus Washington and Jason Hargrave, but really need a starting CB and decided that I could go DL later in the draft. Fuller may get a chance early. 4-8 (106th pick) - SS Miles Killebrew (Lions) This is a bit of a luxury pick. I kind of need a SS, but it wasn't vital at this point. However, I liked Killebrew enough that I decided to spend a pick on him. I really liked Pharoh Cooper as well, but have no need at WR. I also considered DT Hassan Ridgeway. 4-15 (113th pick) - NT Andrew Billings (Bengals) I hope he works out, because I'm probably giving him a starting job as a 3-4 DE. He was too much potential value to pass up. Again, I considered Pharoh Cooper and Hassan Ridgeway. 4-28 (126th pick) - C Evan Boehm (Cardinals) I very much wanted RB Jordan Howard here, and considered G Christian Westerman, but in the end I need a center. I was also enamored with CB Zack Sanchez and DE Matt Judon, but went with need. 5-24 (161st pick) - G Christian Westerman (Bengals) I strongly considered OLB Jatavis Brown and WR Rashard Higgins, but I liked Westerman enough to trade up one spot to get him. I figure between him and Whitehair, I can get a good starter to complement Alex Boone at G, and maybe good depth, too. 6-10 (185th pick) - CB Harlan Miller (Cardinals) It came down to Harlan versus G Vadal Alexander, but I'd already drafted two guards. I need corner depth. 7-24 (245th pick) - ILB Scooby Wright (Browns) I don't need an ILB at all, but couldn't pass on Scooby Wright here. He's got a chance to be a low-cost starter in the long run. I didn't really debate anyone else here. 7-28 (249th pick) - CB Kalan Reed (Titans) We were late in the draft here and I kept hearing that he's a sleeper. So I took him. I didn't really consider anyone else. I came into the draft with starting holes at LG, DE, and CB, and needed upgrades at C, LT, and SS. I hope that I made good progress toward filling those needs. |
Man, we really do like a lot of the same guys.
Fuller was a finalist at 3, I had Boehm picked at 126 until the last minute. I almost took 49ers trade down specifically to get Killebrew but I didn't love the options it left me at 37. Jatavis Brown and Vadal Alexander were both guys I thought hard about in the later rounds and would've taken Alexander as well had I made the 49ers trade and moved up to the 6th. I had Reed as my last pick (was just going to parrot my comment for Thomas) but then decided that I'd switch it up a bit and see if I couldn't find a UDFA that I liked. Looks like the only guys you took that weren't in the final 3 of a pick for me were Harlan Miller, Rashard Higgins and Matt Judon (who I must confess I know absolutely nothing about). I didn't really consider Cooper either but only because I thought Billings was a no-brainer there, otherwise he'd have been on the list. |
I guess I need to name my team, eh?
Gonna go international here - The Mexico City Herrings |
If we accept both trades.....does that mean that we aren't able to complete another trade up or down?
|
And the link for the trade value chart isn't showing anything. What are we supposed to use?
|

Just recall the rules that: Only one trade each way as noted. You cannot acquire more than two extra picks in a trade. In a tradedown you must discount your points by 35 percent (multiply by 0.65) and in a tradeup you must discount your points by 15 percent (multiply by 0.85). |

Yeah, I probably should've done the trade-up thing; I didn't really notice that he went right before our pick at 5-25 (and I knew that Davis went at 5-26 who I really liked and thought we needed as DAT insurance).
That would've allowed me to take Willie Henry at 126 and Westerman at 161. Costs me a couple of WR projects but we have a fair amount of WR depth that I could probably live with. Oh well; poor form to piggyback on someone else's blueprint. |

Pestilence, FYI you can also grab the Bengals' 245th pick in return on your trade. It's only worth 2 points, so you can grab another late guy if you want. |

We're all weirdly in sync. Are we great talent evaluators, or are we victims of media bias in grading players?

Ok I had kelcie McCray but I accepted the trade to seattle. I'm also gonna accept the bucs trade down so here are my picks
1-28 (28th): Myles Jack ILB/OLB UCLA 3-11 (74th): Kivaree Russel CB Notre Dame 4-8 (106th): Eric Muarry CB/S Minnesota 4-28 (126th): Demarcus Robinson WR Florida 5-25 (162nd): Kevin Hogan QB Stanford 5-28 (165th): Kyle Murphy OT Stanford 6-28 (203rd): Mike Thomas WR Southern Miss 7-28 (249th: Vernon Adams QB Oregon |

Clearly rebelling against the Andrew Billings and Christian Westerman bandwagon. We'll see if that helps you or hurts you in the long run. |
Do we get the UDFA's that the Chiefs signed? Or is that a no because they're still considered part of the draft?
|
Quote:
Beginning in Year 2, the rule is that you get anyone that wasn't on the Chiefs roster the year before and who didn't come from the draft. So for example the existing owners will get Mitchell Schwartz and Rod Streater and all of the camp fodder guys. I'll produce that list once training camp starts, and everyone will add them to their training camp rosters. |
Quote:
Okay, I'll make the trade up with the Bengals, giving up 162 and 203 for 161 and 245. I'm also going to make a trade down with the Vikings giving up 106 (82*.65 = 53.3) for 121 and 244 (52+1 = 53). Still taking Billings at 121, it just gives me another crack at a UDFA that I like. 1-28 (28th pick) -- Myles Jack, LB - USC; taking him here in the first to get the 5th year option and redshirt him. Long-term replacement for DJ. 3-11 (74th pick) -- KeiVarae Russell, CB - ND is a good pick here. I ran a trade-up scenario for Bullard but the .85 penalty was just too steep. So I'll be sticking with Dorsey's pick here. I also thought about the higher upside play in Kendall Fuller but in the end, I'm pretty impressed with this kid so I'm standing pat. 4-23 (121st pick) -- Andrew Billings, NT - Baylor; this kid is !@#$ing STRONG. Can't play end like Jones but can probably play the nose even better. Give Poe a breather with him or put him alongside him in Nickel sets and this is a tough line to run on period. 4-28 (126th pick) -- Willie Henry, DT - Michigan; just a nice value play and if Poe really is lost to FA, Henry alongside Billings can team up with Howard and provide a nice bit of push and rotational strength. 5-24 (161nd pick) -- Christian Westerman, G - ASU; best interior line prospect on the board here and better than Ehringer. 5-28 (165th pick) -- DJ White, CB - Georgia Tech; Thought very strongly about going with Jatavis Brown here but ultimately I just don't know how I'd use him in this system. Maybe as a hybrid safety in a 4-2-5 setup but I dunno. He's a 4-3 player that isn't a great fit in a 3-4, IMO. White's a nice little get this late. 6-28 (203rd pick) -- Mike Thomas, WR - Southern Miss; small school kid with elite measurables. Probably nothin', maybe somethin'. Could possibly return kicks. 7-23 (244th pick) -- Jack Allen, C - Michigan State; I don't understand Allen going undrafted at all. I don't think Graham Glasgow is any better bet to be good than he is and Glasgow went in the third. Allen's a smart player and by all accounts a great dude. I'm not sure he can make the team but I'm willing to find out. 7-24 (245th pick) --Avery Young, OT - Auburn; I see absolutely nothing that makes Ehringer better than Young. In fact, I think Young has a better shot at sticking at T than Ehringer and has more upside at G. Allen and Young probably have a battle royale to see who sticks (if either) and it's probably overkill, but I just both of these guys should've been drafted. 7-28 (249th pick) -- Tyvis Powell, FS - Ohio State; signed by Seattle and they do okay identifying safety talent. Tall, fast kid who probably can't be coached into a Sean Smith type but the physical ability is there. Should be a nice backup safety though; more of a Ron Parker style safety than a Daniel Sorenson. |
Threw a little more variety in on this one; I don't think I saw Henry, Allen, Young or Powell mentioned. I thought about Jonathan Jones out of Auburn with one of my 7ths as well as Jeremy Cash at SS or Jake Coker at QB. Jones was just too small (though he can play in the slot somewhere, IMO), Cash too slow (pure box safety; don't care for those) and Coker simply doesn't have the production and given the microscope GMs put big program QBs under, plenty of eyes have been on him and passed.
I almost took Drew Kaser instead of White and Jones instead of Young; frankly I probably should but I don't like the T depth situation on this team at all so I grabbed Young even though I'm not sure he can actually stick there. And I just like White. If we incorporated a salary cap into this thing, I'd have done it. Colquitt's just way too damn expensive. I came off striker because I forgot that I get UDFAs the Chiefs sign and I like Terrance Smith from FSU. I'll probably try to find a way to hold onto him, making Striker a surefire cut. So having used my trade up and my trade down, I will call this one my draft and put my original in spoiler tags so as not to cause confusion. Pest - I also encourage you to take the Billings trade down and pick up that extra 7th to try to snag another of the handful of UDFAs that you can essentially get for free (may I recommend a highly decorated former Big 10 center with a wide open path to playing time in New Orleans....). |
I almost took Jack Allen. I may very well take that trade down like DJ has so generously pointed out.
|
After both my trade up and trade down.....here is my updated draft.
1-28 (28th) - Myles Jack, ILB, UCLA - I could have accepted the 49er trade but it made it too expensive to try and trade back up for Jack. I'll just stay at 28 and draft him. Put him next to DJ until DJ retires.....and then move him to DJ's vacant spot. 3-11 (74th) - KeiVarae Russell, CB, Notre Dame - No explanation necessary. Starts immediately opposite Peters. Gaines is my NB. 4-23 (121st) - Andrew Billings, NT, Baylor - I'm not passing up this beast. If for some reason we lose Poe....he can fill in at NT. I'd love to move Poe to DE....but we'll see. 4-28 (126th) - K.J. Dillon, S, West Virginia - I don't trust any of the safeties behind Berry and Parker. 5-24 (161st) - Christian Westerman, OG, Arizona State - I need competition at the OG spots. There was no way that I wasn't going to trade up one spot to take this kid. 5-28 (165th) - Kyle Murphy, OT, Stanford - My new swing tackle. 7-23 (244th pick) -- Jack Allen, C, Michigan State 7-24 (245th) - Keyarris Garrett, WR, Tulsa 7-28 (249th) - Kalan Reed, CB, Southern Miss. - Insurance in case Nelson turns out to be shit. Plus it allows me to get rid of Cooper. |
Before I do my trades, are we going to argue over 0.3 points?
Basically, my pick discounted at 65% yields 344.5 and the 3 picks in return net 344.8. 65% is already an incredibly stupid number, just wondering if we have to come in exact or under... Edit, nevermind (kinda), I added wrong and it comes to 343.8. In any event, would still like to know if that small amount matters. |
Alrighty... Did more thinking and here's what I've decided on...
To start out with, I'm going to accept both of the Chiefs trades. I'm then going to initiate a trade up with Cleveland to move from 105 to 99 and involves the following picks: Chiefs Receive 4-1 (99th pick) = 104 4-31 (129th pick) = 43 7-29 (250th pick) = 2 Total = 149 Browns Receive 4-7 (105th pick) = 84*85% = 71.4 4-8 (106th pick) = 82*85% = 69.7 6-28 (203rd pick) = 10.2*85% = 8.7 Total = 149.8 Draft 2-6 (37th pick) - Tyler Boyd, WR, Pittsburgh (Bengals, 55) I felt like the Chiefs needed a guy that could come in and be a #2 receiver right away rather than taking a 4th defensive lineman. Boyd also has return ability. 3-11 (74th pick) - KeiVarae Russell, CB, Notre Dame (Chiefs, 74) I love the Chiefs' original pick here, Russell could come in and start right away either outside or in the slot. 4-1 (99th pick) - Joshua Perry, ILB, Ohio State (Chargers, 102) I think Perry was damn underrated in the draft and was infuriated when KC didn't move up to snag him. This guy can do everything at a starter's level. 4-28 (126th pick) - Connor McGovern, OG, Missouri (Broncos, 144) Another guy that slid too far in the real draft, he's got potential to be stud. KC needs competition for a starting guard spot this year and McGovern has the strength to do it. 4-31 (129th pick) - Matt Judon, DE/OLB, Grand Valley State (Ravens, 146) I'm not sure if Dee Ford is actually going to make it yet or not and the Chiefs also have Justin Houston set to miss significant time. The backups don't inspire confidence. I considered Spence for a while at 37. Judon has Houston-like measurables and great production at his level. 5-25 (162nd pick) - Rashard Higgins, WR, Colorado State (Browns, 172) Higgins is the most underrated receiver in the draft and has starter potential. I double-down on potential at receiver. 5-28 (165th pick) - Fahn Cooper, OT/OG, Ole Miss (49ers, 174) I felt like KC should have double-dipped on the O-line. They need guys to push for starting guard spots and a backup swing tackle. Cooper fits the bill. 6-3 (178th pick) - D.J. White, CB, Georgia Tech (Chiefs, 178) Another pick of KC's that I loved is White. Physical for his size, sticky in man, and decent ball skills. 7-29 (250th pick) - Kalan Reed, CB, Southern Miss (Titans, 253) Can't believe Reed dropped to the end of the draft. I had Reed pegged as a 2nd to 3rd round talent. I'll take him here and, like the Chiefs, go for the hat trick on DBs. |
Tyler Boyd doesn't play for ND.
|
Rain man my teams QB situation is still screwed but I'm gonna have one hell of a D.
Those are the Chiefs picks I like. I like Vernon Adams and feel he is worth a stash on my roster. Myles Jack will be amazing in this D. Not a fan of billings or Westerman and I'm fine with Poe and Howard for now. Plus on the Westerman subject I have the luxury of hitting on three OGs in last two drafts Gabe Jackson, Ali Marpet, and L'ael Collins. |
So was Donald Stephenson cut or do we just lose him
