Okay, after a day of thought, here's my draft:
1st round (#18) - CB Marcus Peters I was really tempted to go with Shane Ray here, but I found a non-drug-addicted substitute for Ray further down. The only other consideration here was C Cameron Erving, but since I needed both CB and C, I went with the higher-skill position. 2nd round (#49) - OLB Nate Orchard I like anyone who puts up 18 sacks his senior year, and I could use an OLB upgrade. This was a little bit of a luxury pick, but not much. I also considered Mitch Morse (desperate at C), T Jake Fisher, and OLB Randy Gregory, and to a lesser extent C Hroniss Grasu and DE Owamagbe Odhigizuwa. But Orchard was my guy. 3rd round (#80). CB Steve Nelson. First off, I declined the move-up offer to #76, so I keep my #193 pick and pick at #80. This was a really, really hard pick. Nelson was a bit of a luxury since I'd already drafted Peters, but I like the pick and was really thin at CB. However, I looked really hard at TE Tyler Kroft, OT Chaz Green, DT Carl Davis, G Daryl Williams, and a little bit at ILB Paul Dawson. This was a really hard pick. 3rd round (#98) - OT TJ Clemmings Pretty easy pick here. Really didn't consider anybody else, because I'm desperate at OT. I've invested a lot of picks there and didn't want to give up another high pick, so Clemmings is my desperate gamble there this year. 4th round (#118 - Traded) - Okay, I'm using my trade down here. The #118 pick is worth 58 points, and at a 35% discount that comes to 37.7 points. I'm trading down with the Vikings for their #146 pick (33 points), their #228 pick (2 points), and their #232 pick (2 points). The 2 point figures are because the draft chart only goes to #224, so I just used the value of the #224 pick. (Traded - #146 pick) - QB Brett Hundley My philosophy is to keep taking QBs every year, and Hundley seemed like the best value. It was hard because I'm desperate for a C and strongly considered C Shaq Mason, and I also wanted DE Marcus Hardison. But getting Hundley also let me trade down. 5th round (#154) - I am accepting the trade for G Ben Grubbs. 5th round (#172) - FS Derron Smith. I need help at FS and keep trying to get it in the lower picks. Let's try again. I strongly considered OT Tyrus Thompson here, as well as CB Charles Gaines and our own TE James O'Shaugnessy. 5th round (#173) - DT Michael Bennett Seemed like a great value pick here. I can use him at my 3-4 DE position. Really no other options here, because I was targeting him. 6th round (#193) - C Andy Gallik I really need a starting center, but had too many other holes to fill. So Andy, you're going to be starting for me this year. Let's hope you play well. No other choices here because I'd targeted him as a value pick. 6th round (#217) - TE Ben Koyack I need a backup TE and he seemed like a good value. Lots of options here, but I had lots of 7th round picks, so keep reading. I also considered TE Gerald Christian. 7th round (#228, acquired in trade down) - FS Gerod Holliman. I need a starting FS desperately, but had too many other holes. Hopefully Gerod or Derron can hold it down or one of the strong safeties on my roster can move back 7th round (#232, acquired in trade down) - OT Corey Robinson A long shot, but I liked him and my OT position is a mess right now. He'll have a chance to compete. 7th round (#233) - CB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu. I figure I can stash him on my roster and hope his knee heels. I probably should use one of these picks on La'el Collins, but I didn't. You know, just in case. I liked a lot of the late prospects. |

Considered Lockett but ultimately landed here. 3rd Round (#76) - CB P.J. Williams (Saints) Hated seeing Lockett off the board when the Chiefs picked here. This CB was rated high in my paper draft mag, so now he's on my team. 3rd Round (#98) - OT T.J. Clemmings (Vikings) I'm short on OTs since I didn't accept the Fisher pick a few years ago. I considered G Tre Jackson here, but the fact that OT was a "need" sealed it. 4th Round (#118) - C Max Garcia (Broncos) Another need pick. With this, Clemmings, and Grubbs I feel pretty good about having addressed OL. 5th Round (#154) - I am accepting the trade for G Ben Grubbs. 5th Round (#172) - OLB D.J. It's possible that Hundley may be my #2 QB next year. Draft needs: depth. HB Jamaal Charles Denard Robinson (Jaguars) C.J. Spiller. (Bills) This should've been a position of strength, but Jamaal got hurt. Robinson and Spiller were okay in spot duty. Draft needs: need to think about a HBoTF given Jamaal's situation. FB/H-Back (None) Pretty much using a TE at this position given the modern NFL. Draft needs: none, really. WR Jeremy Maclin Kendall Wright (Titans) Dwayne Bowe Albert Wilson Donte Moncrief (Colts). Strong here. Wright got hurt a lot, so Moncrief moved up to my #2 spot. Great depth, even if Bowe was a bust. Draft needs: None. TE Travis Kelce (Chiefs) Anthony Fasano Ben Koyack (#6/217 - Jaguars) No complaints here at the top two. Koyack got no action at all, though. Draft needs: A TE2 to eventually replace Fasano. OT Menelik Watson (Raiders) Morgan Moses, OT (Redskins) TJ Clemmings (#3/98 - Vikings) Ryan Harris, RT Corey Robinson (#7/232 - Lions) Cyrus Kouandjio, OT (Bills) I turned a weakness into a strength here, or at least adequacy. Watson was out for the year in preseason and I had no established starters, but my second year guy Moses started all 16 games, as did rookie TJ Clemmings and journeyman Ryan Harris. Kouandjio was at least active and got a couple of starts, while rookie Robinson got no action. They're all right tackles so I still need to upgrade, but I at least have depth now. Moses may be the only guy returning to a starter position unless Watson can finally do the job. Draft needs: Starting left tackle. G Alex Boone (49ers) Ben Grubbs (Acquired via trade for the #5/154 pick) Disaster here. All my great depth disappeared last offseason. Boone played only 13 games and Grubbs only 7, so I would've been moving tackles inside to fill the gap. Draft needs: Starting left guard and depth. C Andy Gallik (#6/193 - Titans) I knew I was in trouble here going into the season with only a late-round rookie, but Gallik surprised me, getting 8 starts. This was kind of a win even though not a strength. However, he only started due to an injury so may be a backup again next year. Draft needs: Starting center. K Cairo Santos, K Best kicker in the league. Draft needs: none. P Dustin Colquitt Best punter in the league. Draft needs: none. LS James Winchester Kind of shaky this year relative to expectations. Draft needs: none. Whoever the Chiefs end up with will be on my roster. FS Reshad Jones (Dolphins) Jordan Poyer (Eagles) Derron Smith (#5/172 - Bengals) Jones remains a high performer for me, and Poyer actually got playing time and a couple of starts as my patience pays off. Smith saw only special teams action, so we'll see. Draft needs: none. SS Tyvon Branch Baccari Rambo (Redskins) While neither was a full-year starter, both guys saw a lot of action this year. It's not a strength, but I was finally able to say that this position wasn't an overt weakness. Draft needs: Full-time starter, but it's not a high priority. CB Sean Smith Marcus Peters (#1/18 - Chiefs) Jamell Fleming Steve Nelson (#3/80 - Chiefs) Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (#7/233 - Browns) Man, am I glad that I drafted Peters. My depth isn't great, but my starters are solid. I hope that Fleming and Nelson develop, and knew that Ekpre was a long-term hold since he started training camp on IR. Draft needs: You can always use another good CB, but the need is mostly depth. OLB Tamba Hali AJ Klein (Panthers) Nate Orchard (#2/49 - Browns) Trevor Reilly (Jets) Justin March Hali continues to hold up this unit, though Orchard came on as a strong starter and Klein is a strong backup. Reilly got special teams action and March was an IR guy. Draft need: I really need a #1 pass rusher to replace Hali at some point. ILB Derrick Johnson Rey Maualuga (Bengals) Josh Mauga Zach Brown (Titans) DJ was great, of course, and Maualuga barely beat out Mauga for the starter job. Brown always seems to hang on and produce. Great depth here. Draft need: none. DE Star Lotulelei (Panthers) Mike DeVito Ropati Pitoitua Alex Carrington (Bills) Nick Williams Star isn't the dominator I was hoping for, but he holds the position down along with DeVito. The other guys are all depth. Draft need: Could use a DEoTF here. NT Brandon Williams (Ravens) Daniel McCullers (Steelers) Michael Bennett (#5/173 - Jaguars) Brandon Williams seized this spot and was a strong point on my D this year. McCullers is gigantic depth at this point. Bennett is depth that I hope will develop. Draft need: depth. Overall grades: Offense: Strong at the skill positions, though Wilson ran for his life behind a weak and inexperienced line and Jamaal's injury hurt the running game. Grade: B. Special Teams: Followed the Chiefs. Grade: A. Defense: I'm finally building some good talent in the backfield, but my LB corps is aging and my line investments are not paying off well. I can't generate a pass rush at all other than Hali. It's a serviceable defense that improved over last year, but it's probably only average. Grade: C. |

We both got lucky with Clemmings at OT, but at the same time it sounds like he didn't exactly solidify himself into the position. And it sure is hard to find defensive ends, isn't it? I keep whiffing at that position. I don't know how many you've drafted, but I've spent some capital at DE and OLB and can't seem to find starters, other than moving Lotulelei out there. |

Yeah I'm still bummed about missing the draft year of Russell Wilson he would of been my pick in the third round I loved him in that draft. Got to busy that year to participate and was forced to take the Chiefs draft. Oh well no use in crying now I have to hope a QB I like falls probably . Thought geno was gonna be a lot better than he turned out.

I debated not trading down and taking either Chris Jones or Robert Nkemdiche on the DL, or CB Xavien Howard or DE Noah Spence. It came down to Jones or Whitehair, and Whitehair seems like a safe pick in a big area of need. 3-11 (74th pick) - CB Kendall Fuller (Redskins) This pick came down to Fuller or Shilique Calhoun. I need a DE badly, but I'm in a 3-4 and wasn't sure that Calhoun would fit without a big talent shuffle. I briefly considered DTs Adolphus Washington and Jason Hargrave, but really need a starting CB and decided that I could go DL later in the draft. Fuller may get a chance early. 4-8 (106th pick) - SS Miles Killebrew (Lions) This is a bit of a luxury pick. I kind of need a SS, but it wasn't vital at this point. However, I liked Killebrew enough that I decided to spend a pick on him. I really liked Pharoh Cooper as well, but have no need at WR. I also considered DT Hassan Ridgeway. 4-15 (113th pick) - NT Andrew Billings (Bengals) I hope he works out, because I'm probably giving him a starting job as a 3-4 DE. He was too much potential value to pass up. Again, I considered Pharoh Cooper and Hassan Ridgeway. 4-28 (126th pick) - C Evan Boehm (Cardinals) I very much wanted RB Jordan Howard here, and considered G Christian Westerman, but in the end I need a center. I was also enamored with CB Zack Sanchez and DE Matt Judon, but went with need. 5-24 (161st pick) - G Christian Westerman (Bengals) I strongly considered OLB Jatavis Brown and WR Rashard Higgins, but I liked Westerman enough to trade up one spot to get him. I figure between him and Whitehair, I can get a good starter to complement Alex Boone at G, and maybe good depth, too. 6-10 (185th pick) - CB Harlan Miller (Cardinals) It came down to Harlan versus G Vadal Alexander, but I'd already drafted two guards. I need corner depth. 7-24 (245th pick) - ILB Scooby Wright (Browns) I don't need an ILB at all, but couldn't pass on Scooby Wright here. He's got a chance to be a low-cost starter in the long run. I didn't really debate anyone else here. 7-28 (249th pick) - CB Kalan Reed (Titans) We were late in the draft here and I kept hearing that he's a sleeper. So I took him. I didn't really consider anyone else. I came into the draft with starting holes at LG, DE, and CB, and needed upgrades at C, LT, and SS. I hope that I made good progress toward filling those needs. |

Fuller was a finalist at 3, I had Boehm picked at 126 until the last minute. I almost took 49ers trade down specifically to get Killebrew but I didn't love the options it left me at 37. Jatavis Brown and Vadal Alexander were both guys I thought hard about in the later rounds and would've taken Alexander as well had I made the 49ers trade and moved up to the 6th. I had Reed as my last pick (was just going to parrot my comment for Thomas) but then decided that I'd switch it up a bit and see if I couldn't find a UDFA that I liked. Looks like the only guys you took that weren't in the final 3 of a pick for me were Harlan Miller, Rashard Higgins and Matt Judon (who I must confess I know absolutely nothing about). I didn't really consider Cooper either but only because I thought Billings was a no-brainer there, otherwise he'd have been on the list. |

Give Poe a breather with him or put him alongside him in Nickel sets and this is a tough line to run on period. 4-28 (126th pick) -- Willie Henry, DT - Michigan; just a nice value play and if Poe really is lost to FA, Henry alongside Billings can team up with Howard and provide a nice bit of push and rotational strength. 5-24 (161nd pick) -- Christian Westerman, G - ASU; best interior line prospect on the board here and better than Ehringer. 5-28 (165th pick) -- DJ White, CB - Georgia Tech; Thought very strongly about going with Jatavis Brown here but ultimately I just don't know how I'd use him in this system. Maybe as a hybrid safety in a 4-2-5 setup but I dunno. He's a 4-3 player that isn't a great fit in a 3-4, IMO. White's a nice little get this late. 6-28 (203rd pick) -- Mike Thomas, WR - Southern Miss; small school kid with elite measurables. Probably nothin', maybe somethin'. Could possibly return kicks. 7-23 (244th pick) -- Jack Allen, C - Michigan State; I don't understand Allen going undrafted at all. I don't think Graham Glasgow is any better bet to be good than he is and Glasgow went in the third. Allen's a smart player and by all accounts a great dude. I'm not sure he can make the team but I'm willing to find out. 7-24 (245th pick) --Avery Young, OT - Auburn; I see absolutely nothing that makes Ehringer better than Young. In fact, I think Young has a better shot at sticking at T than Ehringer and has more upside at G. Allen and Young probably have a battle royale to see who sticks (if either) and it's probably overkill, but I just both of these guys should've been drafted. 7-28 (249th pick) -- Tyvis Powell, FS - Ohio State; signed by Seattle and they do okay identifying safety talent. Tall, fast kid who probably can't be coached into a Sean Smith type but the physical ability is there. Should be a nice backup safety though; more of a Ron Parker style safety than a Daniel Sorenson. |
Threw a little more variety in on this one; I don't think I saw Henry, Allen, Young or Powell mentioned. I thought about Jonathan Jones out of Auburn with one of my 7ths as well as Jeremy Cash at SS or Jake Coker at QB. Jones was just too small (though he can play in the slot somewhere, IMO), Cash too slow (pure box safety; don't care for those) and Coker simply doesn't have the production and given the microscope GMs put big program QBs under, plenty of eyes have been on him and passed.
I almost took Drew Kaser instead of White and Jones instead of Young; frankly I probably should but I don't like the T depth situation on this team at all so I grabbed Young even though I'm not sure he can actually stick there. And I just like White. If we incorporated a salary cap into this thing, I'd have done it. Colquitt's just way too damn expensive. I came off striker because I forgot that I get UDFAs the Chiefs sign and I like Terrance Smith from FSU. I'll probably try to find a way to hold onto him, making Striker a surefire cut. So having used my trade up and my trade down, I will call this one my draft and put my original in spoiler tags so as not to cause confusion. Pest - I also encourage you to take the Billings trade down and pick up that extra 7th to try to snag another of the handful of UDFAs that you can essentially get for free (may I recommend a highly decorated former Big 10 center with a wide open path to playing time in New Orleans....). |

There was no way that I wasn't going to trade up one spot to take this kid. 5-28 (165th) - Kyle Murphy, OT, Stanford - My new swing tackle. 7-23 (244th pick) -- Jack Allen, C, Michigan State 7-24 (245th) - Keyarris Garrett, WR, Tulsa 7-28 (249th) - Kalan Reed, CB, Southern Miss. - Insurance in case Nelson turns out to be shit. Plus it allows me to get rid of Cooper. |
Before I do my trades, are we going to argue over 0.3 points?
Basically, my pick discounted at 65% yields 344.5 and the 3 picks in return net 344.8. 65% is already an incredibly stupid number, just wondering if we have to come in exact or under... Edit, nevermind (kinda), I added wrong and it comes to 343.8. In any event, would still like to know if that small amount matters. |
Alrighty... Did more thinking and here's what I've decided on...
To start out with, I'm going to accept both of the Chiefs trades. I'm then going to initiate a trade up with Cleveland to move from 105 to 99 and involves the following picks: Chiefs Receive 4-1 (99th pick) = 104 4-31 (129th pick) = 43 7-29 (250th pick) = 2 Total = 149 Browns Receive 4-7 (105th pick) = 84*85% = 71.4 4-8 (106th pick) = 82*85% = 69.7 6-28 (203rd pick) = 10.2*85% = 8.7 Total = 149.8 Draft 2-6 (37th pick) - Tyler Boyd, WR, Pittsburgh (Bengals, 55) I felt like the Chiefs needed a guy that could come in and be a #2 receiver right away rather than taking a 4th defensive lineman. Boyd also has return ability. 3-11 (74th pick) - KeiVarae Russell, CB, Notre Dame (Chiefs, 74) I love the Chiefs' original pick here, Russell could come in and start right away either outside or in the slot. 4-1 (99th pick) - Joshua Perry, ILB, Ohio State (Chargers, 102) I think Perry was damn underrated in the draft and was infuriated when KC didn't move up to snag him. This guy can do everything at a starter's level. 4-28 (126th pick) - Connor McGovern, OG, Missouri (Broncos, 144) Another guy that slid too far in the real draft, he's got potential to be stud. KC needs competition for a starting guard spot this year and McGovern has the strength to do it. 4-31 (129th pick) - Matt Judon, DE/OLB, Grand Valley State (Ravens, 146) I'm not sure if Dee Ford is actually going to make it yet or not and the Chiefs also have Justin Houston set to miss significant time. The backups don't inspire confidence. I considered Spence for a while at 37. Judon has Houston-like measurables and great production at his level. 5-25 (162nd pick) - Rashard Higgins, WR, Colorado State (Browns, 172) Higgins is the most underrated receiver in the draft and has starter potential. I double-down on potential at receiver. 5-28 (165th pick) - Fahn Cooper, OT/OG, Ole Miss (49ers, 174) I felt like KC should have double-dipped on the O-line. They need guys to push for starting guard spots and a backup swing tackle. Cooper fits the bill. 6-3 (178th pick) - D.J. White, CB, Georgia Tech (Chiefs, 178) Another pick of KC's that I loved is White. Physical for his size, sticky in man, and decent ball skills. 7-29 (250th pick) - Kalan Reed, CB, Southern Miss (Titans, 253) Can't believe Reed dropped to the end of the draft. I had Reed pegged as a 2nd to 3rd round talent. I'll take him here and, like the Chiefs, go for the hat trick on DBs. |

Rain man my teams QB situation is still screwed but I'm gonna have one hell of a D.
Those are the Chiefs picks I like. I like Vernon Adams and feel he is worth a stash on my roster. Myles Jack will be amazing in this D. Not a fan of billings or Westerman and I'm fine with Poe and Howard for now. Plus on the Westerman subject I have the luxury of hitting on three OGs in last two drafts Gabe Jackson, Ali Marpet, and L'ael Collins. |
