I think what happened was that Joanna destroyed grapplers who were defenseless against an elite striker. Especially Penne, who got bloodied up.

Valerie is a competent striker, she's not in Joanna's league, but she has good enough striking defense to keep her face from getting ****ed up too bad.

I imagine next time they put Joanna against someone who is a grappler who cant take her down, she'll tear her apart.

Rousey never tried to seriously grapple, ever. She had plenty of chances to resort to her hip toss into a submission, but a lot of people have criticized her for not being a complete fighter. She wanted to prove she was a complete fighter, but she is not.
