I'm saying it isn't a death sentence and if the Chiefs gave him this contract you can bet your ass he is passing a medical. I just don't understand the doom and gloom. I live in LA so I've actually watched Sammy play and he's a huge talent that has been hampered by an injury that takes time to heal. Just assuming the Chiefs are throwing 10m a year at him and he won't ever play is ignoring the facts.

Amendola to the Dolphins in the works.

Hope so

It’s a mild concern, sure. But the tape last year still shows a guy who is highly explosive and gets open against great corners.

What doom and gloom? Most are ecstatic. I feel like i should be more excited than i am. I don't trust Watkins. But i understand why people are high on his potential.

If you're talking about that GIF series that OTWP posted, imma have to disagree. Some of those plays he was open, sure. Some of those plays though he was well covered. A step on the CB in a vertical route isn't exactly burning a guy like the comments in that GIF series suggested.

BlackOp 03-13-2018 01:04 PM

The plus side is KC has the scratch... and the room to move some of that money to next year.

3 year deal... so no dead cap. He's expensive but not a financial albatross...like the Houston contract.

KC needs to spend NOW while Mahomes is cheap..

This and some reactions around the web and radio about overpaying.

Here's what we've learned this offseason so far: you won’t get high picks for trading secondary players and you’ll pay out the ass for QBs and WR. Welcome to the NFL / Arena League

That is kinda NFL open though, unless you’re Tyreek Hill. You get a step and a half on a corner, especially the guys that he was going against, and that’s a win.

One thing you can’t argue is that Goff did a terrible job of getting him the ball on said plays.

Well sugar tits, I'll answer this question for ya.

It's because that Defense IS rebuilding. Over the next several seasons that D will continue to be rebuilt through the draft. While that occurs, the Chiefs will lean on their offense, whom they just spent the past 5 seasons building through the draft while their Defense carried the team until it aged.

OnTheWarpath15 03-13-2018 01:10 PM

After watching Alex Smith for 4 years, I understand why the fan base struggles with the idea of what constitutes an open WR.

Eh. Maybe in theory. But on a lot of those GIF's you're asking Goff to deliver an absolute perfect pass on time. Not even Mahomes is going to do that everytime.

My point being, his film of "blowing coverages wide open" is a bit of an overstatement.

I'm not freaking out but 30m guaranteed with 2 foot surgeries is something to be concerned about. That's all.

OnTheWarpath15 03-13-2018 01:14 PM

Interesting that people are on Watkins' ass for having an "injury history" when he's only missed half of an NFL season.

I can think of some Chiefs players that the fan base adores who have missed a LOT more.

Pretty hypocritical.

bigjosh 03-13-2018 01:14 PM

The foot injury thing is stupid.

E. Sanders had the same type of issues and has been phenomenal. Watkins has a better skillset then Sanders does as well, by a lot.

ToxSocks 03-13-2018 01:15 PM

https://twitter.com/brickwallblitz/s...443692547?s=21

Well lets talk about each GIF, starting with the first.

The very first GIF Watkins gets a step early, but the DB is stride for stride with him at the top of the route. The ball may be slightly underthrown but that's nitpicking. It's a catchable ball put over the top of his shoulder that he should've come down with. The tight coverage is what caused the incompletion more so than the throw.

Since most of the anti-Watkins crowd seems to be the disgruntled fringe of the Alex Smith Apologists they should consider this fact when discussing Watkins' supposed "injury history"... their Dear Leader Alex Smith only played in a full 16 game season once due to various injuries before being traded to KC.

ToxSocks 03-13-2018 01:17 PM

https://twitter.com/brickwallblitz/s...443692547?s=21

Lets look at the 2nd GIF.

He clearly beats the defenders, the ball is placed damn near perfectly. Goff led Watkins and it looks like the ball hit Watkins right in the hands.

Exactly.

Not hard to figure out.

Unless you studied under Melissa Glick (true story) and all you want is some defensive muscle over here...

ToxSocks 03-13-2018 01:19 PM

3rd Gif, looks like that's all Goff. Goff threw to an area, Watkins wasn't there.

ToxSocks 03-13-2018 01:21 PM

5th and 6th GIFs are impressive.

That over the shoulder catch in the 6th GIF in traffic is a damn fine catch.

The ball was thrown way too far inside - Watkins had to adjust his route, and try and catch the ball over his inside shoulder while he was moving toward the outside. Goff may have been trying to avoid the outside safety, but it wasn't a well placed ball.

I just remembered a kFc game a couple years back when Watkins was with the Bills, he was killing kFc at the half, he had like 120 yards receiving. Then finished the day with like 130 yards receiving and the Bills lost.

I expect a lot of games like that from your $30 Mill Dwayne Bowe.

Do you think before you post?

Did he have Kelce and Hill lined up next to him...with Hunt in the backfield?

Mahomes to Wilson torched your defense for 150...what happens when these four all play next year?

Man, I’m no Stephen A. fan but he’s not wrong at all. This offensive unit is just bananas on paper.

And people seriously overblow our defensive deficiencies. A lot of teams would LOVE to have Houston, EB, Jones, Ragland, Fuller, Hitchens... and you know we aren’t done adding there.

This team’s Super Bowl window is wide open. Buckle up. 3 years of prime opportunities.

saphojunkie 03-13-2018 03:04 PM

They should change the logo to be a flaming arrowhead.

Man, if you're a safety and you see Tyreek Hill in single coverage, Sammy Watkins on the other side, Travis Kelce with a linebacker on him, and Kareem Hunt in the backfield with Sherman in front of him WHAT DO YOU DO.

suzzer99 03-13-2018 03:07 PM

I look forward to Watkins having a great season then getting a concussion 5 minutes into our playoff game.

saphojunkie 03-13-2018 03:12 PM

I also love that Watkins is 12, same as Albert Wilson walking out the door. Will be weird to see that number play so differently.

OnTheWarpath15 03-13-2018 03:17 PM

Just got home and found out that Albert is getting $8M a year from Miami and Richardson is getting $10 from Washington.

Makes the Watkins contract look even better.

The Rams could probably do pretty good against that. The matchups of Peter's and Talib on Hill and Watkins would be pretty even. They could conceivably cover man to man without safety help on some plays. Aaron Donald crashing the middle would also make things tough. But they weren't that good against the run last year and I don't think that they have anyone that can contain Kelce. The safeties would probably play middle of the field in that scenario, helping to contain Kelce and Hunt, while Talib and Peters cover long enough to allow Donald's pressure to force an incompletion.

You have more connections there than I do, but I don't think it was an issue of not being worried about getting him back - but that they knew they were going to be outbid.

And in all fairness, he may not have WANTED to stay in LA.

The safeties would probably play middle of the field in that scenario, helping to contain Kelce and Hunt, while Talib and Peters cover long enough to allow Donald's pressure to force an incompletion.

I think I found future quotes of Peters after our Mexico City game

“He’s fast as hell," Peters said.

You have more connections there than I do, but I don't think it was an issue of not being worried about getting him back - but that they knew they were going to be outbid.

And in all fairness, he may not have WANTED to stay in LA.

they offered less than 8 per year. thats what he was worth to them

I look forward to Watkins having a great season then getting a concussion 5 minutes into our playoff game.

Sad but true, lol.

Considering how that offense operates, I can understand that.

They're never going to pay a WR elite money as long as Gurley is on the roster, IMO.

It wasn't anything to do with his onfield play every Sunday...but everything to do with his attitude from Mon-Sat off-field...and people were just sick of him

Seems like he's got about 3 years per team before wearing out his welcome.

If it's this and *more* stuff we don't know about then I'm ok with it. The stuff we know about is very likely just the tip of the iceberg.

But if any part of losing one of the best corners in football at league minimum is because Clark demanded that the flag sitter go - then I'm super-pissed.

Fly him to KC on a west-bound flight.

Since he came into the NFL in 2014, Watkins is fourth in yards per reception (15.9) among players with 100 or more catches in that span. Only DeSean Jackson (17.6), Tyrell Williams (16.5) and T.Y. Hilton (16.3) are ahead of him in that category.

Among those four players, Watkins has the most touchdowns with 25 in 52 games. Hilton is second with 22 touchdowns in 63 games.

According to Pro Football Focus, Watkins has dropped only eight passes over the last three seasons. It said that Watkins didn't drop any passes on 39 catchable targets during the regular season in 2017.

Watkins had 39 receptions last season, which ranked fourth on the Rams behind running back Todd Gurley and receivers Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods. However, Watkins' eight touchdown catches were the most on the team.
