He takes truly terrible pursuit angles and tends to just go in a direction rather than reading the play unfolding and reacting. When his angle is correct he can be a fierce and fearless hitter. Doesn't have natural instincts and can be caught out of position too easily. Has average speed sideline to sideline despite his awesome 40 of 4.46. He's not strong at the POA, gets pushed around easily. Drawn out of position easily on play fakes. Closing speed is great and can be very disruptive when shooting a gap blitzing. His problem is there's too much guessing going on and not enough football IQ to understand where to be after the snap. I'd rather have Akeem Davis Gaither, who actually understands assignments and can make consistent plays. Great athlete. Not a great football player. |
•1st round - No. 32 overall
CB •2nd round - No. 63 (from San Francisco) LB •3rd round - No. 96 OL •4th round - No. 138 DL •5th round - No. 177 RB |
So much of the ILB spot is about instincts. I dunno that you can really teach that.

I watched Gay against Louisville. Yeah, he looks like a special teams guy at the NFL level because he can't play linebacker. There was one snap where he looked really good and shot through and took someone down. But the rest of the plays made me think that was an accident as he was constantly taking bad angles. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/y_0N9nY6tDA" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
At the same time...

I dunno. Angles and instincts at LB are similar to accuracy issues for a QB. I don't know how much of that can really be "taught".
I'm assuming he woudln't be the pick at 32 and more likely a 2nd rounder? Or are we talking about him at 32? |

What we need is an eraser...a guy that can diagnose the run and pass and has range..covering up mistakes and erasing them. That's what we need. Look at Devin Bush last year. That's what a linebacker looks like. |
