Question for the pizza delivery veterans. What's a reasonable tip?

I generally tip about ten percent. I figure that they're making their money already as opposed to waitresses who get that weird sub-minimum wage stuff. So I can't see tipping the same as I'd get in a restaurant where I'm getting water refills and butter and stuff. But I don't know if I'm clueless. It always causes me stress because I don't know.

Back when I did it in the late 80s, a buck was cool, anything more than that was great. Or at the very least round up to the next dollar and don't make me dig up change for you.

Nowadays I usually go $2-3 depending on the size of the order.

Four bucks is a happy medium, unless they're delivering 24 pizzas for a party, then you want to throw fifteen or twenty, at least, well I would, anyway.

I am a notorious heavy tipper(cab drivers fight over who gets to take my drunk ass places!) but I'd say 10-15% should be kosher.. but I'd set a $3 minimum. I usually tip 20% + whatever the extra change is to make it a whole number amount.

Okay, it sounds like I'm in the right range, then. I usually go $2.50 or $3. I feel better knowing that I'm likely out of the spit zone.

I generally didn't pay attention to how much of a tip someone gave me. My griping would just make me unhappy, it wouldn't help me get another dime. I just tried to be as courteous as possible, and didn't think about the arithmetic. I found my pizza delivering life was much less stressful that way.

Hmmmm.....that doesn't sound any different from every person on the planet. It's personal choice.

I worked for a delivery service that had a much larger area than most pizza places have. We got paid $3 a delivery. Used our own vehicles and paid for our own gas. On a busy night, I would probably get 15 deliveries. But most nights it was closer to 10. Without tips, the job was not worth the mileage you were putting on your car.

Back then, $3 was and average tip. Anything over $5 was a good tip.

Granted that was almost 15 years ago and gas wasn't $3.50 a gallon.

Now I'm thinking about maybe looking around here, seeing if some place is hiring part-time drivers. Maybe pick up a shift or three a week. Couldn't hurt.

Most exciting pizza delivery story?

I was doing the closing shift. It was around 12:30 at night and the last delivery of my shift to the Ambassador Motel (yes, it's just as sketchy as the name implies)

I walk through the dark hallways expecting a vagabond to pop out of nowhere, rape me, and steal all the cash in my wallet. But I make it safely to the room. The door is already open. Inside there's a guy with his head between his knees and beer bottles all over the ****ing place. The guy is TRASHED.

He has the cash in his hand and attempts to make conversation with me but I can't understand him. Suddenly he slaps himself and works up the effort to say, "I've got an extra $20 for you if you give me a ride to the liquor store down the street." I say I can't do that as politely as I can. He puts up a fuss about it, but eventually leaves me alone and lets me leave.

I go over to my car, toss the bag in the back seat, and am about to get going when out of NOWHERE, like, a goddamned ninja the guy opens the passenger door and forces himself into my car. At this point I'm ****ing freaked out that he has a weapon. He says, "I NEED a ride to the liquor store. Here's the $20. Just get me there. And give me a ride back, I'm too drunk to find my way."

Out of sheer fear, I agree and take the $20. Along the way the guy is talking to me about how some of his friends screwed him over and messed up his car, ****ed his wife, etc. but I'm not really listening. I'm thinking about bolting as soon as I get to the store, but then I realize if I do, the guy could possibly try walking back by himself in the winter, be found dead, and the investigation could come back to, "He had just ordered pizza... delivery guy?"

So I wait for him to get back, pissed as ****. I'm ****ing sick to my stomach that I was a wuss and didn't throw him out of the car, call the authorities, etc. He gets back with his damn alcohol and keeps yammering. I'm still driving pissed. Thankfully it's only two city blocks.

At the end of the drive the guy is actually really nice. Doesn't apologize for forcibly entering my car (he had probably forgotten) but says stuff like, "You're the best delivery driver I ever had." As he's getting out, he says, "Oh, by the way, I forgot. I promised you $20," not realizing that he had already paid me the $20.

But I wasn't about to turn it down. In fact, I pushed it. "Actually, sir, I think it was $40 you promised."

He looked at me for a second and said, "Oh, yes. Sorry. I'm really drunk. Here's another $20. Good night."

$60 on one delivery. Almost worth being scared ****ing shitless. At least it makes a really ****ing great story I can tell people.

you are a good story teller

Enough to buy a gallon of gas is usually enough to keep me happy. So right now, anything less than $4 is pretty annoying. Of course, the mileage driven is taken into account as well. If I drive 4 miles round-trip and get $3 I'm not going to be mad, but if I drive 12 and get the same amount, I'm about to murder someone. So keep that in mind next time..

You'd tip your server 20% when you go out. And for what? To take your order and bring you your drinks? That's bullshit. Granted they get paid like $4 an hour; but most delivery drivers are only going to get paid minimum wage so it's maybe $3 more per hour AND THEY'RE SPENDING MONEY TO PROVIDE THE SERVICE FOR YOU. All servers 'spend' is a little sweat and some elbow grease MAYBE. The gas, oil changes and wear and tear make you really ****ing pissed when the guy hands you $2 with a smile and says "have a great day". Go **** yourself, pal. If you're not going to sweeten the deal and make it worthwhile, get off your lazy ass and get the pizza yourself.
