Argylle was a shit show...boring and overly convoluted.
|
So I've been dog tired and needed to get work done in the office, so I put some stuff on that should have been mindless noise, so I put on some older movies.
I put on Mr and Mrs Smith, I tried the series because I liked this one so much. Yeah, it's cringey, and over the top, but I really friggin like it. It is excellent mindless fun. I also found Empire Records. I loved it when I was younger and haven't seen it in forever, probably 25 years. There was a lot of stuff going on for me. 1. HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BOY the 90's were a long time ago. 2. I remembered it being pretty campy and kinda dumb. And it is in some parts. On some level though, it was pretty deep (especially for the time) and has aged pretty well. The mental health part with Deb trying suicide, the drug stuff with Liv Tyler's character, Renee Zelweger's character using sex as a crutch. If it wasn't 30 years ago, it would probably be called woke. Some of it was campy and handled maybe not super great, but it was interesting to see those issues on screen. I don't remember much from that time addressing any of that. 3. Some of the performances were sneaky good. When Liv Tyler and Zelweger were screaming at each other was pretty good. That's a really tough scene to act and time right. Tyler wasn't very good in several scenes, but Zelweger was sneaky good in a lot of hers. I've notoriously not been the biggest fan of hers through the years, but she was really good in this one. Speaking of Zelweger, she actually sings pretty well in the last scene. Wasn't expecting that. She's way better than the dude that sings the song. 4. It was a pretty good nostalgia hit on some of those songs. If you ever liked it, it's not a bad trip down memory lane. |
I watched Stillwater on Amazon prime the other night. I totally expected it to be a ripoff of taken but it surprised me and I thought Matt Damon did pretty good playing a fish out of water Okie trying to get his daughter out of a French prison. I liked it.

This looks fantastic... I love the voice of Archer. Although it would suck to be the lead in a movie where everyone gets to hear your talk but it isn't you.

Ricky Stanicky on Amazon. Not gonna blow your socks off. Its just a goofy comedy but def worth a watch. Some really funny parts and its free.
Zach Efron, John Cena, some other ppl u might know in it. |
Watched a movie called Poor Things yesterday. Trailer was really strange, and Emma Stone gets naked through the entire movie. But it was just way too weird and stupid. If you would try to explain the plot to someone, they'd think you were crazy. Other than Emma Stone being all slutty nekkid, it was a total turd.

Nice popcorn flick. Me and my brother will likely skip out on work at lunch, go get an excellent burger somewhere, and catch the early showing week of release. |

I'm also apparently ignorant when it comes to the vast Titans/Kaiju character pool. |
American Fiction was the saddest funny movie I may have ever seen.

I was skeptical, but Radical was pretty fantastic. For those that can do arthouse and subtitles, anyway.

Not sure how much it matches up with the old show but I am still in. |
Did a search and nothing came up. Just watched "Big George Forman" on Netflix and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Back in the day, boxing was a big deal and these guys were constantly in the news. I paid little attention to Forman then, but did buy his grill. Ali was the noise maker. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/18wj_2tIdG4?si=8G-f3cVHzqJSlVFf" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe> |

Another sequel 20-30 years too late.
Coming 2 America, Dumb and Dumber To. I’m probably forgetting others. Has this ever worked? |
Fury Road, Blade Runner, Toy Story 3...that's all I've got. Maybe Bad Boys.

Seems like movies outside of the comedy genre fare a little better, but I can’t think of any comedies like this that were successful after such a long time. |

How bad does Sandler need money? I think he was the top paid actor last year already
|
Road House on Prime was alright.
Some of the CGI scenes look really bad, however. |
Watched the Beekeeper this weekend. Hilariously overdone "badass" movie. Highly recommend if you want to laugh at a testosterone flick.
|
The Beekeeper went a bit too far for me. Too ridiculous. Some pretty good fight scenes. But the plot and the writing felt like a shitty Steven Seagal movie.
|
Fall Guy looks good. I’ll definitely watch it and not only because of Gosling

If so, and penis envy mushrooms don't intimidate you, grab some 'cause this is your movie. I'm a huge Godzilla fan and I don't know if I like the 2nd half of this movie or not. I can't decide if it went full good Nick Cage or full bad Nick Cage in the last 1/3rd. Seriously. I see what they were trying to do but I don't think they stuck the landing. The first 2/3rds is like an homage to 80's kid/teen movies and saturday cartoons but the last 1/3rd is just Stephen King and too much cocaine. WAY too much cocaine... |

Did a search and nothing came up for a terrific movie, "Mending the Line" on Netflix. Perry Mayfield from "in he Dark" and Brian Cox from "Succession" do a great job IMO.

Then the last 1/3rd or so became Kung Fury. I think the meme-tastic orgy of nonsense will make the internet label it try-hard and it'll backfire. Who knows though - this is clearly aimed at the 14 and under age group - not the 35+ age group that grew up on Godzilla. |
Watched Anatomy of a Fall. French film. Courtroom drama with replays of family interaction. It was nominated for several oscars. I'm surprised the young boy wasn't nominated or something. He was very good.
Outside of that, it wasn't that exciting. More of a "film" than a hollywood hit. I thought the lead actress was strong too. |
Most certainly late to the party, but Iron Claw was incredible.

I watched Bob Marley: One Love the other night. I thought it was well done. But admittedly, it was a real struggle to figure out WTF they were saying most of the time. I turned on subtitles, but that didn't really help much either. The subtitles were the same Jamaican slang they were speaking, so you'd end up with subtitles like "Ja Mon, I and I fi gon down ta store." :spock: But the story was cool, and it was well done other than the difficulty understanding the dialect.

I watched Anna (2019 on Netflix). It's decent enough. At some level it tries to be Wick which it fails at, but it's a pretty decent spy flick nonetheless. It does some Nolan-esque ****ing with the timeline, but after the initial shock wears off, it works pretty well.
I didn't see a bunch of the turns and the end was a pretty fun little ride. It's not life changing, but it's a good watch. |
Finally got to watch "Late Night with the Devil". I've been a bit of a fan of David Dastmalchian since his break in The Dark Knight, and he really nails the 70's talk show host with probably the best piece of acting I've seen this year. It's like The Network meets The Exorcist. For those who were around in the 70s, I think you will get a big kick out of this.

Anybody down for this? Doesn't look too cheeseball, Eckhart brings an air of depth and class, action looks good, and I LOVE Olga Kurylenko. I'd watch her balance her checkbook if it was on TV.. |
The Beekeeper.
Watched this the other night. The story seemed pretty silly and there were action scenes even more unrealistic seeming than usual. It was a Statham film, I felt like I had a good idea of what to expect going in and still felt this way. Wouldn't recommend edit: Josh Hutcherson is very punchable and plays his role well |

Went and watched the new Mad Max Furiosa today and it also wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Lots of car chases, torture, and explosions. If Waterworld, Taken, and Pulp Fiction had a threesome and produced a kid, it would be called Mad Max Furiosa. |
