Why call up Zimmer if we aren't in contention? Why rush him and burn service time? And if we are out of contention in May, clean house. Get someone in here who will do right for the long-term. Maybe someone who can cobble together a staff that can actually develop a ****ing hitter. I would retain Eiland, however.

I actually tried looking at how wide Hosmer's stance actually is and tried doing a full swing as if I were pulling a pitch. I'll tell you this. It is a pain in the ass clearing the hips with that kind of stance. I think that's what Karros meant when he said that. It's a nice stance for hitting line-drives to center and opposite field, but that's about it. He needs to close it to have any sort of home run power. There's next to no leverage.

As long as the Cardinals are contending, GMDM has nothing to worry about. David and Dan Glass are Cardinal fans, and won't be distracted to tinker with the Royals if the Cards keep them entertained.

If we have another May with less than 10 wins (which is totally possible) here's what I'd do:

1) Send Moose to AA Arkansas and leave him there all year. If you can't trade him in the off season, assign him back to AA Arkansas in 2015 and make him play his way to Omaha. Then we'll see what happens. He's had enough of a track record to show what he is: a less than .200 major league hitter who can't solve left handed pitching. For the rest of this year, just flat start Valencia at third. He's a better overall player, and won't be a black hole in the sixth spot.

2) If we're 10 games below .500 at the AS Break, trade Shields. Get the best value you can for him. He's not coming back anyway, so what's the point?

3) DFA Chen. He's done. Don't care, he's done.

4) If Cain can't stay healthy the rest of the year, trade him in the off season. He's never made it out of April healthy. Can't rely on him. He's the Brokie Croyle of the Kansas City Royals.

5) After the AS Break, consider trading Alex Gordon for prospects. He's on the downward arc of his career track. Send him to a winner so he can get to the playoffs at least once in his career. Do him a favor, get him out of this Hell.

6) Try to sign Salvie to an even longer term contract. Keep him in Hell for a long time.

7) If we're more than 10 games below .500 at the AS Break, fire Ned. Let Sveum serve out the rest of the year, then get a new skipper for 2015.

8) If Billay has less than 10 HRs by the AS Break, bench him, DH Maxwell the rest of the year.

9) Continue to start Duffy. Let him take his lumps.

10) After the AS Break, get Zimmer up here, Start him. Let him take his lumps too.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Currently, KC is last in MLB in team home runs, third from last in slugging pct, and fourth from last in on-base pct.

Why wait?

Something has to be done sooner rather than later. This whole weekend was bullshit.

Nightfyre 05-04-2014 08:04 PM

Billy: "I don't think it matters who's in first place on May 4th," Butler said. "I'll leave it at that."

Butler apparently doesn't think winning matters.

gblowfish 05-04-2014 08:04 PM

Moose has 14 hits and 20 Ks. Belly K's 2.5 times for every walk. Don't even want to think about how many times he's hit into an inning killing DP. Maxwell's average is only three points lower than Moose, and he's only played in 12 games. Gordon only has one homer. Hosmer has no homers. Infante seems to be only well rounded player on the team. Aoki can't hit on the road. It's a cluster ****.

tk13 05-04-2014 08:06 PM

The two wild card spots makes it less likely Shields gets traded, unless we completely fall apart. You just have to hang around .500 and then make a run.

Even now, we are 1.5 games out of a wild card spot.

Maxwell's productive month post trade seems to be diluting everyone's judgement about him. The dude has never been able to hit right handers with consistency and has never even posted as season as productive as Butler's 2013.

Those pining for Maxwell's mediocrity should allow that last sentence to sink in before calling on him to be a full time DH.

DISCLAIMER: I am not defending Billy or the Royals of their performance and I am not saying that they're going to magically flip a switch and win 90+ games.. merely explaining his comments. I am also not comparing the talent between the Royals and the teams mentioned below.

That's not what he said, and what he said isn't exactly wrong. Nowhere did he say that "winning doesn't matter."

Sure we would all love to be in first place, but as we have unfortunately found out over the past 3 days, Detroit is not finishing anywhere but first in this division. Our only hope of making the postseason this season is through the wild card.

Now back to Billy's comments, I am not trying to defend him or excuse him of his poor performance through the first month, but he has a point. May 4th, 2013, exactly one year ago today the Tampa Bay Rays were 13-16. As you probably know the Tampa Bay Rays finished the season with 92 wins and won the AL Wild Card.

Also on May 4th, 2013, the LA Dodgers also held a record of 13-16. The Dodgers finished off the year at 92 wins and were the NL West Champions.

Bottom line the team is obviously going to have to start performing one way or another. No offense, no postseason.. simple as that.

C3HIEF3S 05-04-2014 08:43 PM

I don't believe Maxwell is capable of becoming a full-time DH, but I also don't believe he is getting consistent-enough AB's to be productive off of the bench.

I am not saying they don't have a chance. I am merely pointing out his laissez-faire attitude. I want my team to have the desire to be better and the intestinal fortitude to be accountable. Billy just doesn't seem to give a rip, and really, it mirrors Ned.

Quote:

"We caught a team on fire," Butler said. "Everything they hit found holes, they hit a lot of balls hard. We'll catch 'em later in the year."

Butler was asked if the Royals, going into the Detroit series, had thought much about their opportunity to take over first place.

"I don't think it matters who's in first place on May 4th," Butler said. "I'll leave it at that."
Quote:

"Anytime you get swept, no matter who it is, it's disheartening. You don't like to do it," Yost said. "But, we were unfortunate enough to catch them real, real hot. Hopefully next time around, they're going to catch us hot and we'll see what happens."
All I see is excuses. How about manning up and being competitive?

KCCHIEFS27 05-04-2014 09:05 PM

Edmund Burke-"Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it." That quote from Billy is disgusting. This team, nor the fans, can afford this mentality that these games don't matter. Or, it's too early in the season to worry about our record. I say, no, it is not too early to be worrying about the same habits this team has repeatedly displayed throughout the last few years. A terrible early start to the season means disaster for this team. We have seen it before. This team is lackadaisical through the early stages then tries to turn it on and get's hot far too late. Hey Royals, try something different. Try winning early on. See how well that works. Because this ho-hum approach doesn't work, nor should it.

You know, this is something that me and my father in law were talking about at the game today. We have pretty decent front row seats behind home plate in the upper deck so we have a good idea of what's strikes and what isn't. It seemed like after the first inning Verlanders zone increased some on the outsideportion of the zone. At the same time, Varas' to us shrank in the same area. So we talked about hitting approaches from each team. Detroit could sit on anything outside because it wasn't being called and we surmised that the Royals had to change they're approach on the outside pitches because it was being called strikes for Verlander and they had to protect with swings. Could be wrong, just something that both him and I saw. He's had these seats for the last 10 years and we've had ours for the last 2.

Umpire not calling the game both ways... must be Ned's fault.

CoMoChief 05-05-2014 12:20 AM

Well a pitcher like Verlander is going to get those calls more times than not.

It's the Michael Jordan rule. If you're one of the best, the discretion usually rules in your favor.

Leads to a different conversation. After a called k for Verlander we both went ballistic yelling that there's no way that was a strike. Next inning (I think it was top of the 3rd) Vargas throws the same pitch on a 3-2 count and ump just stands there for the walk on Martinez if I recall correctly. Tiger fan behind us says, that that's why Verlander is Verlander and Vargas is Vargas. Then he proceed to rumble off stats for Verlander. I'm a purist for the most part, but it's absolutely frustrating when the same pitches from different pitchers are called differently.

DeepSouth 05-05-2014 06:18 AM

The Royals just played one of the best teams in baseball. There's a reason the Tigers have won the Central the last few years. It's disheartening to get swept but it happens.
The Royals now get to play seven games against two teams that have losing records. Plus, Billy will get to sit on the bench for the first three. Can the Royals pitchers bat into more double plays per game than Billy?
My feelings are, if the Royals are still playing 500 ball at the end of May, they have a chance to make the playoffs. If they'd have been playing 500 ball at the end of May last year, they'd have won the Central. The Royals were 7 - 7 against the Tigers after the All-Star-Break last year.

There were a few pitches like that but for the most part we were swinging at bad pitches. We just go up there and swing. And in Homser's case he goes up there and tries to knock the cover off the ball with every swing.

I made it to Sat and Sundays games. It was disappointing, frustrating and awful to watch. My biggest issue isn't that we got swept by the Tigers, it's that we looked so dysfunctional in this series. It's almost like we just mailed it in after Shields got pounded on Friday night. Awful performances all the way around - pitching and hitting.

Very important 7 game West Coast trip. Would love to go 5-2 and get back to above .500, but I envision something much worse, more like 2-5. Starts with a big game tonight. Need a money performance by Ace.

Nonsense. The guys at BB America had him 8th overall in a stacked 2011 ranking. I've posted the other names and its chock full of studs. Except....8 (Moose), 9 (Hos), 10 (Myers), 18 (mike Montgomery) and 19 (Lamb) have largely done jack shit for us. It's inexplicable

I going to disagree to an extent. Whether it's Ned or GMDM, someone is telling or otherwise allowing these players to take a shit approach to the game. Their offensive approach is nothing more than "go up to the plate, swing hard, swing often, hope for good things".

If you look at this last series I can't recall other than maybe 1 swing by Hunter where any of the Detroit batters were swinging like Hosmer does. Butler finally started hitting and what was the noticeable change? He quit swinging so ****ing hard and trying to pull everything.

We all know Ned wants to see more homeruns but whatever it is these guys are trying to do it ain't working.

Then you get to the sloppy play on defense and it just tells me these players are just being allowed to do whatever the **** they want. There is no leadership. There is no sense of urgency. We keep hearing this "it's only May" shit when last year, "May" is what kept them out of the playoffs.

Because he's trying to pull everything. He's completely forgotten how to hit to the opposite part of the field.

Where's Seitzer when you need him?

Remember Rex beating off to Alex "new approach" last year vs LH? "I asked him what his approach was in the past and he said 'I didn't have one'. But now he does, that comes with age and I'm an annoying piece of dung homer paid by Glass to peddle this propaganda"

Sure would be nice to have a hitting coach that could teach these guys how to hit and inspire them not to suck big camel wangs like they have been. Would also be nice if Ned where managing a team for someone else.

Que estas Duncan? That guy predicted 90+ wins and a playoff appearance. Looks like he's run for the hills and is in hiding.

Sure-Oz 05-06-2014 07:46 AM

SAUTO 05-06-2014 07:47 AM

I spent the weekend in Memphis at the music festival for a bachelor party and returned late last night. Not hiding. Busy.

I didn't see any of the weekend games and only caught the tail end of the game last night. Tuned in just about in time to see Gyorko take Holland deep.

I did think this team was capable of winning 91-92 games, because I expected at least a league average offense with the additions of Aoki and Infante. Those two have been about what I expected.

I did not expect Butler and Gordon to be WORSE than they were last year, even in this small a sample size. Sal Perez also has not produced as well, again in a small sample size.

Pair a league average offense with this starting pitching and defense, and you're talking about a team that's on track with what I expected.

There's time left, but they must turn it around quickly.

The stuff about this management group that leaked over the weekend, I have no comment about that other than to say Craig Brown perfectly encapsulated my thoughts on the matter.

Dayton Moore and co. seem to have not adjusted to the internet age and the fact that hardcore fans have access to so much more data and analysis than in the "good old days."

But that shouldn't surprise me. Moore and his people have not adjusted to the modern game, post-strike, in any arena. No way they're going to be on the ball about this.
