I mean shit, Cubs - I WANTED you to put us in a hole this year and you couldn't even do THAT right. |

He literally said that looking at last year mid 80 wins got you in the playoffs, so that's what they aimed for. Not winning the division, not becoming a legit WS contender while being the 4th largest market in the ****ing sport... mid 80 wins. So he trotted out virtually the same ****ing team as last season with the addition of a Japanese pitcher who's potential greatly outweighed the risk of the contract he would get. And what do you know, they ended with the same god damn record. He was just bummed it took 90 wins this year. |

Oh you sweet summer child. Our owner said that 6 years ago. BEFORE the playoffs expanded. We want to play meaningful baseball in September and 88 wins makes the playoffs... So yeah, you know 85 wins and sneaking in by a game was the target mark with that sweet, sweeet 3rd wild card spot. But he just didn't count on so many teams in the NL being bad enough that it still took 89 to make the post-season. Lemme tell ya - The fun has just begun. When ownership gets it in their heads that simply sneaking into the playoffs is all you need to do, it's just a JOY to watch them work. You're gonna like how this goes. Because you see, shortly before that sort of thing happens, you get "88 wins isn't good enough" but not long after you get post-game pressers where nothing changes and your owner says "83 wins is a winning season...I think its an exciting team to watch" Enjoy. |
Normally I love a good DJ rant but that last one is just depressing.

We're racing the Pirates for the basement. Cincy has WAY more talent that the Cardinals and a lot more room for growth. |

They have the arms (Paul Skenes, Jared Jones, Bubba Chandler, Mitch Keller) for a window to compete. Their position player group is underwhelming but I do like Bryan Reynolds and O'Neil Cruz. Overall, with more competent moves, they could make a run. Their GM Ben Cherington won the World Series with the 2013 Red Sox. But ownership seems to get in the way, too. They jipped Rowdy Tellez and Isiah Kiner-Falefa for incentative-based bonuses before they could reach them in September, letting all of MLBPA know they're cheap. During their 2013-15 window, ownership would never make the extra move to go above the $105 million threshold in payroll. |

I mean...no shit?
Contract was expired and he sure as hell didn't earn a new one. Even the Cardinals aren't that stupid, cheap or lazy. Now watch what they do with Dusty Blake. He IS under contract and near as I can tell brings nothing at all to the party. They'll keep him. Because it's the easier and cheaper thing to do. And they ARE that cheap, lazy and stupid. |
