Yeah, he absolutely would, but there's no way the UFC would do it even if Diaz never goes to Vegas. Since Cerrone did beat Henderson regardless of what you think about the judging, Cowboy has now won too many fights in a row for the UFC to just throw him away like that. He's now worth more money to Zuffa in 2015 to set up a #1 contender fight in his current weight class. He loses a couple fights, then he can go back to being the crazy non-contending mercenary again.

If the UFC hypothetically fed him to the spider 2 weight classes up with less than a week's notice, that seems to be a very stupid move to me. At this point he's won too many matches in a row, they are going to force him to stick with the plan until he loses. They can use him to headline a Fight Night or co-main a PPV later this year against Khabib.

alnorth 01-28-2015 06:24 PM

Dana White was on Jim Rome, and some great quotes came out of that.

Dana White on Nick Diaz's disappearing act: ‘I did it to myself’

Quote:

"First of all, we have a show called UFC Embedded, they showed up there Sunday to start filming him -- couldn't find him. We went through his management team and they set it up, they said ‘what we'll do is we'll set up a team dinner, you guys can film at the team dinner.'

"None of them showed up at the team dinner, then nobody answered their phones when the guys started calling. So then yesterday Nick was supposed to land in Las Vegas at 2:20. He missed his flight. His management team called and said, ‘book him another flight at 7:30.' Not only did he miss the first one, he missed the second flight. His bags made it to Vegas and he never did."

...

"The problem is this: it's too late," White said. "I already made the fight. We're sitting here on Wednesday. There's a lot of things he doesn't show up for, but he always shows up for the fights, so I'm counting on him showing up.

"I did it to myself again. I made a fight with Nick Diaz, a big main event fight. You know, when you get him in the office and you sit down, and he's like, ‘Well, you know, I feel like I haven't been paid right. Pay me right.' He's being paid right for this fight. It doesn't matter how much you pay him, he's not going to... I did it to myself, so I can't sit here and cry about Nick Diaz. It's Nick being Nick."

Shit, my bad. Forgot he was 155 for a moment. I'm not sure given Silva's injury, age, and he was declining before the injury if anyone is really being fed to him. He's like a box of chocolates right now.

I really don't think this is a bit. Sure, they are kinda harping on it now to drum up any kind of interest in the PPV, but I believe they expected him to be in Vegas this afternoon.

I'm thinking his agent/management read him the riot act when he missed the 2nd flight.

Its still a very interesting fight that I want to see. If Cat goes down, then Rousey has pretty much cleaned out the division, but man I was looking forward to Weidman and Belfort.

Jerm 01-30-2015 07:05 PM

Gastelum was TEN pounds over at the weigh ins and rumor is that the fight vs TWood tomorrow night is off.

What a clown....

alnorth 01-30-2015 07:12 PM

TEN DAMNED POUNDS?!?

Holy crap. Well that fight's off, and the card suffers a bit. I'm guessing Tate moves up into the PPV?

edit: and Lineker was over by 5 pounds.

edit2: Apparently the fight is actually still on after "extensive" negotiations and 30% fine that goes to Woodley.

Jerm 01-30-2015 07:17 PM

Nope the fight is going ahead....30% purse fine goes to TWood.

How the hell are they letting this go on?!?

ArrowheadHawk 01-30-2015 07:20 PM

I'm assuming that Woodley received assurances from Dana and the Fertittas that they would take care of him in the future if he lost. Woodley had a lot of leverage. He's got every right to decline the fight, and he knows the UFC badly wants it to continue.

alnorth 01-30-2015 10:38 PM

well, looks like I might watch a boxing match for the first time in 17 years.

Media reporting tonight that Mayweather-Pacquiao is pretty much a done deal.

alnorth 01-31-2015 01:16 PM

Apparently Gastelum was having a very rough cut. It was going to be close but he was on the way to making weight, but he collapsed Friday morning and had to go to the hospital where they rehydrated him. So, thats why he was 10 over. Gastelum's coach says he probably shouldn't be fighting, but its up to Gastelum and he wants to fight.

Dana White just announced that both Gastelum and Lineker will have to move up a division. Gastelum is going to be a middleweight from now on.

alnorth 01-31-2015 04:00 PM

The UFC tried to set up an interim middleweight title fight between Belfort and Machida for 184, but Belfort refused, saying he's been training to face a wrestler, and a southpaw karate fighter is too different with one month notice.

Reportedly Belfort and his coaches told the UFC that Romero, Souza, Rockhold, or Munoz would all be acceptable substitutes.

raybec 4 01-31-2015 05:21 PM

This is a bad look for Gastellum. He was never exactly shredded at 170, he will be a very small 185er

Yeah, it probably does make you sexist, in all honesty. Either that, or you are a super-casual MMA fan.

OK, I think we can all agree that a welterweight, a Jon Jones, or heavyweight title fight are all more compelling, but setting all that aside, Rousey vs Cat is very interesting, and I'd rather see that than tiny men. (flyweights)

Who cares if they have small boobs under a sports bra, Rousey's Judo throws are crazy-good.

alnorth 01-31-2015 10:46 PM

I think Gastelum won, but not sure. He's gonna get straight murdered in middleweight.

KC native 01-31-2015 10:54 PM

I thought Woodley won. It was a center 9f the ring control or clean strikes type of decision.

58-4ever 01-31-2015 11:07 PM

Someone should update me on Diaz / Silva

alnorth 01-31-2015 11:11 PM

Round one was bananas. Diaz is mad trash talking Silva. He actually laid on the ground and hopped back up to mock Silva.

alnorth 01-31-2015 11:16 PM

Silva won at least 1 of the first 2 rounds.

Its either 19-19 or 20-18 Silva

NewChief 01-31-2015 11:23 PM

Silva with 2 out of 3. He looks tentative though. He seems to be pausing and second guessing himself on some strikes that he should take, though. That's just my uninformed opinion.

NewChief 01-31-2015 11:36 PM

Silva looks like he just went into the ring for a workout/sparring session. Diaz is beat to shit.

NewChief 01-31-2015 11:42 PM

Nick Diaz was a douche after the fight. Jesus. He's saying "Let's go" but he wasn't bringing shit.

Rico Rodriguez says different. Boxing has more than it's fair share of examples to refute that as well.

He did a stint on some rehab reality show

BigCatDaddy 02-03-2015 08:51 AM

Common sense here goes a long way. Dude test positive for a substance in December that is not a performance enhancer, but actually effects the cardiovascular and muscular systems in a negative way if used daily. Kicks this awful disease 4 weeks prior to the biggest fight of his career while in the middle of a training camp then goes out and kicks DC's ass for 5 rounds. Is sent to rehab then given the boot 24 hours later.

Yeah, dude just likes to party a bit hard on occasion. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'm not emotionally invested in the guy either way, but I do enjoy watching him fight since he is damn good so I don't care if he's an addict or not. I'm just putting things in perspective here.

IMO Dana played it up a bit to garner some sympathy for him as a victim that is trying to over come his demons rather than saying dude when out had a few drinks and a few lines at the club.

Yep, if he's a real full-blown cocaine addict, then he's not going to win fights. Recreational cocaine use is possible, tons of people did it in the 70's and 80's.

Exactly. You can be an addict and maybe whip Fatty Fatterson and Dan's Pub and Grub, but not the best fighters on planet Earth. Alex Smith has a better shot of leading the league in passing yards than Jones being an "addict".

I think Silva's done regardless. The post-fight interview just screamed "I wanted to show I can win ONE more fight and not go out like Chuck Liddell." to me.

alnorth 02-03-2015 08:34 PM

Minor bit of controversy. Silva's test was an out of competition test from an independent lab on January 9th. Nevada and the UFC did not receive the results of the test until today. If they would have gotten it before UFC 183, Silva would not have been able to fight.

The cynical conclusion is obvious, but officially, no one knows why it took so long for the independent lab to notify Nevada and the UFC.
