Assuming 2018 is the beginning of the Mahomes era-- there is a strong chance that the starting OL (or 4/5ths of it) will be playing their 3rd straight season together. Their strength is pass blocking too, which is a plus.

The skill positions are largely in tact too long term.

Chiefs QB Alex Smith will collect a $2M reporting bonus for showing up to training camp today, by far the largest such bonus in the NFL.

Maybe players (maybe some do?) should have a bonus clause to show up for "voluntary ota" and they wouldn't miss out on the "voluntary practice" ?

Isn't that what the "workout bonus" is? Not sure, just curious as well.

It's a pretty good job if you can get it.

Cool, that means football is nigh, but **** me if training camp isn't a ****ing tease.

I'm still around, but I'm a lot busier nowadays.

I'm going to camp for a couple days next week, though...so I'll have some thoughts posted when I get there.

training camp is fun to hear and read about for about 5 days. after that, I'm ready for it and pre-season to be over with.

The thing is, I don't think Jah Reid saves us much cap in 2017. He does in 2018, however.

I stated just yesterday that Reid should be cut and replaced by a guy like Witzmann.

Hopefully Veach makes a habit of extending guys early, ala Peters/Morse/Jones etc.

According to OTC, Reid saves about $2.1M this year. We can roll that over to next year though, so it still helps long term.

Ahh I figured OTC would have already accounted for that. In that case, it's a pretty easy call to release him if they trust Witzmann.

According to Terez Paylor, Witzmann split first team reps at left guard with Fulton at OTAs. Perhaps he is competing for that job as well? Maybe Reid isn't gone just yet.

How long is Ehringer out for?

It's possible for players to emerge from the 3-4 year practice squad-and-cut cycle and turn into starter-quality players. Ron Parker is a clear example on our own team of just that.

I'm... still not going to hold my breath on Witzmann, though. It's nice that he's been with the team already as an inactive player every week, but when you've traveled that much and been tossed around that much, it's rare for guys to just find not only that 2nd-life gear that occurs when everything clicks for them, but also to find the OPPORTUNITY to demonstrate it.

And yeah, he's splitting first team reps now. Great for him. We've seen that before with Eric Kush and Rishaw Johnson.

OL just seems to be one of those positions where just because it's MORE common to find diamonds-in-the-rough for that position group over others, it doesn't mean that every guy who comes along as an undrafted free agent and has plus size/strength/whatever attributes will be your next starting OG.

I don't disagree. Wiztmann was a small school guy (South Dakata State), so the learning curve is a little steeper.

Eric Kush started for the Bears last year. I realize that they weren't a good team but he is a legit NFL player.

Clearly, the Chiefs invested in Morse so there wasn't room for Kush.

Can he play tackle as well? I'm not sure the reason for Reid sticking around, he doesn't seem that gold

I know passing over Rodgers is one of the biggest misses in team history, but man DJ is an all timer.

He's one of my favorite Chiefs ever.
