Good defense by K-State to create 2 more points before the buzzer.

insane finish. Rebels successfully trapped and forced a turnover, missed an easy shot, K-state rebounds and runs the other way for a layup with a second left.

UNLV is shooting a little better, but mostly similar to KSU. similar in fouls and free-throws, no big turnover difference.

The difference is that K-State is on fire tonight from 3-point range.

He does that 2-4 times a game. It's his shot. He's better shooting from a sprint than from being set.

To be fair, UNLV has been leaving Pullen and Clemente open on many of those. Why they came out in a zone against guards like this was surprising.

kstater 12-12-2009 07:41 PM

Watch this lead come back down. Cats don't suit well running clock.

Dude, Jake's been turning it the frack on this year. I'm really excited that he's finally looking like the player we've wanted him to be since he stepped on campus. He's the undisputed leader of the team [despite Denis being the senior] and is looking like its best player as well.

Sutton looks like he's getting it going as well (then again, he's my boy, so maybe I'm a little biased). Anyone else think that after hitting that open jumper that he'll start hitting them on a more regular basis? Cause if he can become even a decent threat on the offensive end, LOOK OUT, this team is gunna be sick!

Man, I'm excited about this team. They look completely different from the team I bitched at against Ole Miss and the team we were all freaking out about after FHSU. This is the kind of team I envisioned when we hired Frank, and I'm glad they're coming around.

EMAW.

WilliamTheIrish 12-13-2009 06:59 AM

I guess the three point shooting came back to the norm. After going virtually 0-fer the year it looked like Mike Evans and Chuckie Williams out there.

FT's were also an incredible turnaroud from the last 4 games.

Great game.

alnorth 12-13-2009 01:57 PM

Wow, don't look now but the computers absolutely love K-State. Remember those years when KSU would have a halfway-decent W/L record but got shut out because of the RPI? Yeah. That wont happen this year.

Even if they lose a few more games in the conference than their fans might want, their extremely tough non-conference schedule gives them extra margin of error that they just didn't have in previous seasons.

RPI Rankings:
1. Duke (8-1) - Strength of Schedule #1
2. Kansas State (8-1) - SoS #4
...
5. Texas (8-0) - SoS #44
18. Texas A&M (7-2) - SoS #16
21. Kansas (9-0) - SoS #129
26. Texas Tech (9-0) - SoS #146
31. Oklahoma State (7-1) - SoS #101
71. Baylor (6-1) - SoS #198
142. Oklahoma (7-3) - SoS #241
148. Iowa State (7-3) - SoS #235
151. Nebraska (7-2) - SoS #322
161. Missouri (6-3) - SoS #251
239. Colorado (4-4) - SoS #275

Couple notes: KU's SoS will improve, they have all their most difficult non-con games in late December and early January this year.

The Big 12 conference RPI is spectacular this year at a solid #3. They might not catch the Big East, but they could pass the ACC if they continue to win in December. This should easily be a 5-bid season, perhaps even 6.

Saulbadguy 12-13-2009 02:10 PM

I think if we can beat Alabama, an 8-8 record in the Big XII would have us at a 8 or 9 seed. We'd still need a signature win in the Big XII, but with KU, UT and A&M visiting Manhattan I think we can get one of those.

Saulbadguy 12-14-2009 09:57 AM

Jacob Pullen Big XII POTW. EMAW.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jacob Pullen, Kansas State, G, Jr., 6-6, 209, San Antonio, Texas/Patterson School [N.C.]
Pullen averaged 22.0 points as Kansas State extended its win streak to six games with victories over Xavier (71-56) and at No. 18/17 UNLV (95-80). The junior guard connected on 48.1 percent (13-of-27) of his shots, including 9-of-17 (.529) from 3-point range. He started the week by scoring 14 of his team-high 16 points in the second half against the Musketeers in 24 minutes of action. Pullen then followed with 28 points versus the nationally-ranked Rebels, including a career-best 7-of-10 from beyond the arc. The seven 3-pointers tied for the fourth-most in school history. Pullen also had seven rebounds, four assists and two steals in his two outings, while connecting on 9-of-14 from the free throw line.

They got his information wrong, though. He isn't 6-6, he isn't 209 lbs and he isn't from San Antonio, Texas and did not play prep ball at the Patterson School.

mikeyis4dcats. 12-14-2009 10:14 AM

That's good news to offset the disappointing news that Brandon Banks was charged with battery and possession over the weekend.

Not sure who would admit they got beaten by a midget, but whatever. Will probably hurt whatever small chances he had of getting picked up in the NFL for return duties.

#22 in the coaches poll. Kinda rare and weird to have a 5-spot spread in the polls. This usually only happens when you have a situation like this where a team quietly notches some really impressive victories. Usually the sportswriters have been following along and the coaches havent really heard of them yet because they are a bit busy with their day jobs.

Saulbadguy 12-14-2009 12:48 PM

Highest we've been ranked since 1988.

Seth Davis and Gary Parrish both were talking about KSU before the UNLV win - many had them ranked in their own polls so i'd think that is pretty accurate.

I don't know, WTI. Not counting the FHSU game, I think they've been solid. The scary part to me, is that they are doing this without their star recruits providing much bang. The other surprise is Martavious Irving. Kid has been an excellent addition for someone that really wasn't supposed to be much in year 1. Great defender, and VERY solid from 3pt land.

Lot's to be excited about.

WilliamTheIrish 12-14-2009 09:25 PM

Defensively, I agree. Ferocious D. Swatting shots from everywhere. Until that out-of-this-world performance by the guards Saturday night the O had been pretty pedestrian.

We'll see what happens in the next two weeks.

Martin breezes on in Manhattan, even without the Beas
Dec. 15, 2009

Presented by Epson

Kansas State offered Frank Martin the job.

He accepted the offer.

He was excited.

But then the columnists starting writing columns, and the radio hosts started hosting radio shows, and Martin was stunned by the reaction. Both locally and nationally, the consensus was that Martin was only replacing Bob Huggins because he was capable of holding together a recruiting class highlighted by Michael Beasley.

And guess what? There was probably some truth to that. If KSU didn't have a heralded recruiting class set to enroll, it's possible Martin wouldn't have been promoted. But if that's what it took for this son of Cuban immigrants to get a break in life, well, it was a break Frank Martin probably deserved, a break long overdue, and he wasn't about to turn it down.

So he was excited.

But why weren't others excited for him?

"Everyone else gets their first opportunity, and people root for them," Martin said by phone late Monday. "But when I got my first opportunity, all people said was that I wasn't deserving of it, that I was going to be a failure, that I was an ex-criminal. One person even wrote that hiring me was a disgrace to college basketball."

A disgrace to college basketball?

Now that's saying something.

"Did I read all that stuff? Yes," Martin said. "And did all that stuff bother me? Yes. I'm a human being. It bothered me. But I didn't let it impact how I did my job. The only thing I worried about was doing my job to the best of my abilities for the people who believed in me, that being my bosses and the players and assistants who chose to stay and work for us. That's all I worried about, doing my job so that we could all move forward in life."

I called Martin on Monday night and had this conversation. I figured it was a good time to revisit the story of the man few believed would last at Kansas State much longer than Beasley, because earlier in the day Martin's Wildcats -- with a 9-1 record featuring wins over Dayton, Washington State, Xavier and UNLV -- went from unranked to No. 17 in the AP poll. It's KSU's highest ranking in more than two decades. And the best part is that Michael Beasley has nothing to do with it.

Beasley is a second-year pro for the Miami Heat.

He was a one-and-done phenom at KSU.

Now he's long gone.

As are Bill Walker, Clent Stewart and Blake Young. In total, four of the top five scorers from Martin's first Kansas State team (Beasley, Walker, Steward and Young) that advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament have moved on. The only real holdovers are Jacob Pullen and Dominique Sutton, meaning Martin was successful in 2007-08 with one roster, and now he's winning in 2009-10 with a totally different roster.

So Martin is no longer living off Beasley.

Or Huggins.

This is his program, and he has proved to be more than just a guy who could ride Beasley to a bunch of wins. He did that, sure. But with associate head coach Dalonte Hill working beside him, Martin simultaneously put a foundation in place, enrolled a couple of talented transfers (Denis Clemente and Curtis Kelly), signed another McDonald's All-American (Wally Judge), and now he's in great shape.

Barring a collapse, Martin will take these Wildcats to the NCAA tournament this season, and then nearly every relevant player will return next season, which means it's reasonable -- at the risk of getting ahead of ourselves -- to suggest that Martin is on track to win at least 20 games in each of his first four seasons and that Martin is on track to make the NCAA tournament in three of his first four seasons.

So hiring Frank Martin wasn't a disgrace to college basketball.

Turns out, it was a blessing to Kansas State.

"First-year coaches and even guys who have won a lot of games, they usually get a pass when they have young teams," Martin said, point being that he did not. "We had seven freshmen on my team that first year, and nine of the 13 scholarship players were first-year guys. And we beat the best team in the country [Kansas] that year. We finished third in the league. We beat Southern Cal [in the first round of the NCAA tournament]. But nothing we did was quite good enough for people outside of who we are.

"But for us -- my bosses, our players, our staff -- we understood how much we grew and how hard we worked. So we appreciated what we were doing. And at the same time, we were trying to build the program for the long run, not just for that one year."

So far, so good.

And far better than most anticipated.

He has an iron-clad rule that whichever team in a conference has the highest RPI, he will assume that team wins the conference tournament. It is more relevant for one-bid leagues where you have no idea who is going to win yet but if your going to do bracketology, you have to pick SOMEONE in each league to win the conference tourny to account for 1-bid leagues.

Of course if that actually happened in the Big XII, both KU and Texas probably wouldnt be 1-seeds, so he just uses that "this team wins their conference" rule just to determine who gets in, not seedings.
