And yes, The Royals and the Chiefs are bigger than the Big 12-4+very little tournament.

And as always, the state of Missouri thanks you for dropping your hard earned cash here.

The Big 12 thanks you for dropping 700m on a new playground just for us. Kemper was not suitable for this event and your taxpayers agree.

According to the city, the Big 12 tourney produces 10-15m in benefit. At 8% sales tax rates, that's about 1m per year in tax revenues to the City. The district costs about 20m per year per the link below. So we do kick in 5% of the cost. Every little bit helps.

The Mickey D roster (24 players) has 4 SEC recruits and 2 Big 12 recruits, with one still undecided and considering a couple Big 12 programs. Of the 6 signees, all are going to Kentucky or Kansas.

Bowser 04-03-2014 12:39 PM

Not nearly as hysterical as thinking Sprint for built for the Big Nameyournumber.

True, but Florida and Texas are so chock full of talent that they can pick and choose from the crops of their states. I'm assuming here with basketball since it's that way with football and baseball.

I'm sure Kansas City had MU in mind as well as nice support for the KU Basketball machine when Sprint Center was built. When the university turned their back on Kansas City the focus of the sports business in Kansas City shifted to the Kansas side.

It's been nothing but success ever since. Championships only reside on one side of the state line.

Avoid playing the only good teams all year in the SEC and then get raped for 600 yards rushing on national tv.

Any thoughts on where UMass ends up? I'm not sure how much they've put into their football program since announcing their move up, but surely they'd have to consider going back to FCS, or dropping the program altogether. I guess the Sun Belt still has a spot open for a football-only, but that seems like a negative relationship for both sides.

Pasta Little Brioni 04-04-2014 08:32 AM

UMass made a decision to protect their basketball. The MAC isn't terrible, but the A-10 had one of its best seasons ever and their administration bet that everyone would stick around/the Big East wouldn't try to raid them. I'm sure they would have preferred the status quo, but when the MAC pressed the issue, they had to back out.

The MAC has this weird obsession with expanding east. Every time they've tried (UCF, Temple, UMass), it's gone sour pretty rapidly. Maybe they should try to raid the Valley - Illinois State, NDSU, Northern Iowa and yes, Missouri State would all be solid candidates.

I want to say there is no way that 40% of the St. Louis area is pro-Illini, but I don't have much experience with the Metro-East. I did notice a significant presence of "other", though - various Big Ten, SEC and local/regional schools (SIU, SEMO, etc.). We may have our hoops games on channel 46 up there, but MO State doesn't have much of an on-the-ground presence - only about 15,000 alumni live there. I'm surprised we even got a TV package.

I'd guess around a third of them are. It seems like they're larger because they cluster around campus, but MSU still has a significant commuter group. I'd eyeball the student percentages as 1/3 from the 417 zip code, 1/3 from the St. Louis area, 1/6 from Kansas City and the rest from elsewhere in Missouri or other states.

That being said, we just finished Showcase weekend and there were Illinois license plates everywhere. I am now in fear that Chicagoland has discovered Springfield. God help us all.

Prison Bitch 04-07-2014 01:11 PM

Looks like realignment has had zero of the predicted impact on basketball powerhouses. Funny stuff from SI a few months ago:

POSTED OCTOBER 29, 2013
Evaluating hoops’ winners and losers of conference realignment
ANALYSIS
BY RUSH THE COURT

Losers
Connecticut and Cincinnati: These Big East castaways were desperately hoping for an invitation to another league such as the ACC. Instead, they have been relegated to the lesser American along with the likes of UCF, Houston and SMU. Quite a status change from where they used to be, wouldn’t you say? It’s not the end of the world but it’s certainly a net negative for these two schools, especially the three-time national champion Huskies. Connecticut may very well be the biggest loser in all of conference realignment. This is a program that has experienced tremendous success as a founding member of the original Big East and was left hanging out to dry as the dominoes fell all around it.

I've heard it's both. There aren't too many Illinoisans as of now, and most of them are from Belleville, Alton, and other towns by St. Louis. What was different about the last few days was the volume of Chicago-related clothing (especially Bears stuff) and license plates with frames listing dealerships in Mundelein, Arlington Heights, and other Chicago suburbs. They were on and near campus, at the nearby hotels, etc. It was like we had turned into Mizzou for 72 hours.

Yes. I lived there for 5 years.

I'm sure there were more t-shirt fans there this year due to the success of the basketball team in recent years. There are a lot of Mizzou/SLU hybrids that like both teams.

After the team returns to mediocrity starting with the 2014-15 season, I'm sure it will fall back off until SLU's next "good for 2 years this decade" window.

After KU's lack of attendance during the Big 12-4+2 tourney, you have no room to talk. After all, KU gave your second favorite team, ISU, a free home game during the tourney.

And we won't even mention KU attendance at Arrowhead...that would just be too embarrassing.

This is good news to hear other fans go to the Big 12, since that proves KU doesn't have an unfair advantage at Sprint Center. Hopefully more folks like you start thinking this way so the tourney stays local, and so that KU gets the credit they deserve for all their success rather than saying it's "unfair."

That picture sucks. Any context as to what I am looking at?

If anything is going to doom the SEC Network, it's probably this picture. And, no, I don't have any idea what it is depicting.

This is another giant ZING! from Bambi. I don't know how you do it, man? And I especially don't know how you find this to be at all relevant your point about a sports network. The SEC just played in both the CFB and CBB national championship games. They both lost, but I would say it's a GOOD thing for a conference to be represented in the top game, no????

For those wondering what this vague, and totally irrelevant picture is depicting:

It is supposedly a picture of a dorm room at Louisville where one of the students has a UK flag that can be seen hanging on his/her wall. Burn!!!

UCONN sweeps the basketball titles. Realignment was supposed to ruin them. I remember when the Como-Sexuals left for the SEC many of them said: "KU basketball is going to die now when they're forced into the Mountain West, Mo Valley, etc etc"

Just another in their hilarious line of stupidity that emanates from that reerun fan base.

I hear that Oklahoma is moving their campus to Washington State so they can join the Pac-12.

I personally love a 10 team league. The attention you get is magnified by everyone.

I couldn't even name you all the teams in the BIG or SEC. Let alone who cares about any of those teams who have never been to the BCS or Final Four.

You can't really think UCONN didn't suffer a bit of a loss in realignment - when they went from being in a top 3 hoops conference to being in the AAC - can you? That league was fine this year but loses Louisville soon.

They're in a less prestigious league that is on less firm ground. Memphis, UCONN and Cincinnati is not a TERRIBLE threesome to hold up your league, but it isn't tremendous, either.

Also, pretty much all of UCONN's key contributors were juniors or seniors recruited when UCONN was part of the Big East. They haven't recruited as well over the past few years and don't have an overwhelming amount of talent coming in this year. You think maybe being in the AAC instead of the BEAST with Syracuse and St. John's and Georgetown, et al, is maybe hampering Ollie's recruiting efforts? Just a tad?

Will be interesting to see how they progress without Napier et al. Omar Calhoun is the one guy on the roster who was pretty highly regarded, but he hasn't done much yet.

I love college football. It's a great exhibition that showcases future NFL talent.
