Would you rather a team like the Royals be consistently competitive over a number of years, competing (and making) the playoffs, for a time? Or have one magical season (say, this year) like the Rockies had a few years back that resulted in a Championship? (Yes, I realize the Rockies lost the World Series that year) What say the masses of Royals fans??? |

But, as you stated, the cost would be a little prohibitive. |

Royals WIN.

Screw that Wild Card noise. We're coming at Detroit, and we're coming hard.
We're in the toughest part of our schedule, they're in the easiest. And yet we're hanging with them game for game. We have young players that should improve. They are old. Verlander is Billy's little bitch, and Gordon's grand slam is still in the air. |

If we settled for, say the 2nd wild card, we could end up flying to the Bronx, lose the wild card game 5-4, and we're out without having a single game of playoff baseball at the K. |

Detroit is very good. I don't think they're quite as good as that run differential suggests. |
I had forgotten they played 4 against the Stros. I was thinking 3 games. That makes the run differential even less impressive . . . .
|
Talk about giving up aspirations of the division title is premature, at best.
|
I would be curious to know what the difference was between the run differential of the Tigers versus the Royals, prior to the Astros series???
I realize Detroit was probably higher, but how much higher at THAT point versus now? |
Quote:
I expect to lose ground this week, but we still have our Astros games in the future. If we stay within 3 games by the time Sunday is over, we'll be fine. If we're within 2 games, I'll be very happy. If, somehow, we're actually in 1st place after Sunday, then Detroit will have some ground to make up, but thats unlikely. |
Quote:
They were +23 in 26 games before that series. The Royals were +17 in their first 26 games this season. |
Ceding the division to Detroit now would be like ceding an election to the Republicans after hearing that the polls in Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, and Kentucky have closed.
Just wait until the schedule evens out. |

Once you start staring at the ump and yelling at him, your fate is in his hands, but I don't understand the 3rd base ump ever ejecting someone in that situation. If the home plate ump is fine with it, then he should be fine with it. |

people pay $ to see Bryce Harper.
I would have been seriously pissed if I were at that game and that was the reason he was tossed. It looked like a horseshit call as well. |

OK, fine I guess it is his call then. In an interview after the game, the third base ump said Harper threw his hands up while holding the bat over his head in a big show, and the ump told him to knock it off. The umpire then said Harper slammed his bat on the ground, the umpire warned him, then Harper spiked his helmet, and only then did he eject him. If it actually happened that way, then screw that guy, he can't do that. I would have tossed Harper too. However, its not really clear that it went down that way. I can't see video from the computer I'm at, maybe someone else can describe it. I'm reading that he may have just lightly tossed his bat and helmet towards the dugout, since he was the third out, as if asking the batboy or a coach or someone to take it. |
I saw it live on MLB channel when it happened. Harper checked his swing, he shouldn't have been called out. But he over-reacted like a big diva. That's what got him punted.

A month into the season and time to look at what Myers-Odorizzi-Montgomery are doing in Tampa's AAA farm club (Durham NC). Myers is in a 5-34 slump with 15 strikeouts. He's struck out a whopping 37 times in 105 at-bats with 3 home runs and 5 doubles. This is 2x the rate Hosmer & Moustakas struck out at Omaha. Read one analysis (not sure if fan or scout) who said he's looking less and less like Dale Murphy and more and more like....wait for it.....JEFF FRANCOEUR:
http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx...14&position=OF -On the other hand, Jake Odorizzi is off to a fantastic start 3-0 2.65ERA. He leads that league in K with 39 already to only 13 walks. He started yesterday and helped throw a combined no-hitter. http://www.mlbprospectportal.com/201...-odorizzi.html -Mike Montgomery threw 3 innings, allowed 8 baserunners, got hurt and has been out since. Probably no reason to discuss this guy any longer. -Patrick Leonard is in A-ball. He is hitting .135 in 96 at-bats so far with 0 home runs. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx...39&position=3B |
Quick question.
I'm planning on taking my son down to Crapaheim for the Royals/Angels game on Monday the 13th. It looks like it will be Mendoza pitching. Am I right? Of course there could be rain between now and then. |

I don't think Francoeur makes a ton of sense (because Myers takes more pitches and walks more than Frenacoeur ever did) as a comparison. The one I like is a RH Jay Bruce, though Myers' K rate is even higher as a minor league guy than Bruce's ever was. |
Billy driving in runs.

I think Harper was ejected when he spiked his helmet and the ump got a good look at his hair!

No one likes Harper's attitude and his swing means his back will bust harder than the dude at the end of They Live

Here's some positive news:
Yordano Ventura's last two starts at AA: 11 IP | 20 K | 5 BB (higher than you'd like to see) | 3 H | 0 R | 0 ER For the year (six starts): 29 1/3 IP | 43 K | 11 BB | 19 H | 7 R | 6 ER Works out to an ERA under 2, a K:9 of 13.2, a WHIP of 1.02, and a K:BB of 3.91:1. Awesome. It would appear his mastery of AA is nearly complete. Next step for him will either be elevating him to Omaha, unless they want him to refine his off-speed pitches some more. I could see him left at Omaha a ittle while longer and told to pitch backwards more often. Either way, he could be a nice weapon to call up in September and use out of the bullpen. |
When will Dayton get in the faces of Hosmer and Moose and tell them their perforamnce is unacceptable and not tolerated at the MLB level? Doesn't the management have a duty to kick guys in the ass when they perform this badly?
Moose is down to .198 with a .276 slug %. Hosmer has a .326 slug %. These two are the biggest wastes of space. Dudes have 1,000 AB at this level. P Yovani Gallardo has 2 homers in 16 AB. Yeah: a freaking pitcher for Milwaukee has more homers this year than Punch & Judy do COMBINED. |
Quote:
Both are showing signs of life, if you do something other than scout box score totals. Moustakas, for example, has raised his BA 50 points in the past week and raised his OPS 140 points. The level of at-bats he's having has raised significantly. In that week, he's hitting .320 with a .480 SLG and a .414 OBP. And that includes the 0-4 yesterday (when he batted three times against Chris Sale and once against Matt Thornton, incredibly tough assignments). Hosmer has been stinging the ball and hitting into a lot of bad luck lately. His approach at the plate has been strong, with good walk rates, and he's been putting good swings on balls he should drive (like the first at-bat against Sale... that ball would have been out of many parks, especially in June/July/August). Your obsession with being right on this matter severely clouds your judgment. |

Facts hurt, don't they? You know what doesn't hurt? When someone who chronically overreacts gets proven wrong and tries to lash out with insults to make himself feel better. You're still on the "banish Moustakas" bandwagon, even though he has started to turn things around (if you take a look at split stats and recent trends). Being "right" about needing to yell at Moustakas and banish him to Omaha to "show him it's serious" is more important to you than what is actually happening and can be tracked statistically. Maybe you should sit a few plays out, and not overreact for a while. |
The nice thing about baseball is there usually (not so much this year so far) a game the next day.
It helps when you drop games like yesterday. |

Anyway back to reality. By my calcs Moose has to hit .361 the rest of the way to finish at .300. Obv wont happen but if he hits .300 from here out he can finish at .250. (That's how buried he already is) |

I don't know what numbers you are using to calculate this (obviously flawed), but if he ends up with the same number of ABs for the season as last year (563) and he hits .300 the rest of the way, he'll end up at .283. At a more conservative 500 ABs, he'll finish at .281. I'm not saying he's going to hit .300 the rest of the season, only pointing out that you don't know what the **** you are talking about. |
