Gone are the days of paying for past contract sins for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Right now, the Chiefs rank near the top of the NFL in effective salary cap space, with $14,755,982 available per Over The Cap.

One of the reasons that their cap space is in such a good spot is because they’re not paying out a ton of dead money to players who are no longer on the team. For instance, Kansas City stopped paying for the contract handed out to Eric Berry just last season.

The Chiefs actually rank seventh in the NFL with just over $7.9 million in dead cap space according to Over The Cap.

Only six NFL teams have less dead cap owed than Kansas City. They’re paying dead money on just four contracts right now, though, that number could increase as we get closer to the season.

Here’s a breakdown of those four players and how much dead cap they account for with numbers courtesy of Over The Cap:

Anthony Hitchens: $4,223,750
Laurent Duvernay-Tardif: $2,000,000
Tyreek Hill: $1,450,000
Cornell Powell: $180,114

Would you pay Lamar 44m/year?

**** no. I’d trade him and let someone else throw their money away.

Interesting that of all the people drafted last year only Powell carries a dead cap hit.

We cut Powell? I thought he was still on the roster?

Rainbarrel 05-20-2022 07:07 PM

Powell is on the playing squad(double dipping?). He may be part of a special teams makeover. Several oldtimers moved on

I'd trade him for 2 #1's, a second, and a third the next year and call it a day. That would be my asking price.

He didn't make the 53 last year, so was cut. He was then re-signed to the practice squad.

I guess I didn't realize part of his rookie salary went to dead cap under that scenario. Learn something new everyday!

Because rookie contracts get a signing bonus and that’s immediately dead money once the check is written.

Makes sense. I guess I just figured since he was still with the Chiefs that somehow that part would be skirted.

Welp

Would love to have full understanding of Veach's thought processes on our D-Line situation.

My guess is Robert Quinn or Carlos Dunlap.
