My review of The Invisible Man (2020):
It sucked. https://i.imgur.com/NjfqRM6.gif Also watched: Waking Ned Devine (1998) Coto de caza (1983) Morderspiel (1961) |
Watched Nightcrawler (2014) the other night.
Gyllenhal was amazing. Gained a new 'spect for him as an actor. Wasn't satisfied with the ending, though with 30mins or so left in the movie, i already had a strong impression that the ending wasn't going to give the gratification i was hoping for. Well written, great story. Superbly acted. Ending was rather abrupt. |

Totally different type of movie, but I thought he was really good in Prisoners with Hugh Jackman as well. |

Oh, I'm seeing that.

For those that haven't seen the Cage film called Mandy (it came out a few years ago) I HIGHLY recommend checking it out. I watched it high as hell and was taken back by it. An intense nightmarish acid trip into hell. Cage was ****ing awesome in it. |

LMAO the IMDb plot summary for pig:
A truffle hunter who lives alone in the Oregonian wilderness must return to his past in Portland in search of his beloved foraging pig after she is kidnapped. |

What a ****ing trip. I'm half sad that every movie isn't this good, and half scared to death that there are minds out there that can even imagine making something like this. Overall, I'm glad I waited and stayed away from buzz. It was an experience to watch with no preconceptions. I hate to think if I watched it after reading a bunch of reviews and recaps. One thing I'll have to say without spoiling anything [because it's a performance point, not a plotpoint], but Jake's blinking will haunt me for the rest of my days. A weird takeaway from such a film, all things considered, but it was searing. |
12 Monkeys for the first time last night. Mind bending.
I then watched it again because something wasn't lining up for me to close the full circle. It was the message Railly left on the number Cole was given. Must have been taking a bong hit at that time. |
Quote:
Check out 'Memento' if you haven't already. That's a real mind bender. |
Has anyone watched Batman The Long Halloween part 1 yet?
|
Halloween (2018)
This is a very tired franchise. What they should have done: 1) Set the movie in the early 80s. Halloween night isn't the same in 2018 as it was in 1982. 2) Ditch all the Laurie Strode stuff. Enough already. 3) Focus on atmosphere, suspense, and creative kills. There were 50 million slasher flicks in the 80s but only a handful were memorable. The ones that were (usually) emphasized those three things. Edit: I did like the face/flashlight gag. |
Quote:
Anyways getting back to the masterfully done 12 Monkeys, its . definitely "mind bending" for sure & so well done all around. The director (Terry Gilliam) wasn't messing around here. |
If you like 12 Monkeys you might be interested in La Jetée (1962).
Los cronocrímenes (2007) is also a very good mind twisting time travel story. |

Watched "The Devil Below" on Netflix.
****ing GARBAGE. Super low budget, bad acting, plot holes, makes no goddamn sense. The little bit of CGI they had looked like claymation....don't waste your time. Doesn't even serve as a decent B movie. If you see the trailer and think, "hey, monster movie, i'll give it a go", nope. It doesn't even serve as a halfway decent monster movie. It failed on every level. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/LWLwzYXbFdo" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
I also saw the new Fast and Furious Movie.
Well....it's a Fast and Furious movie...more akin to the latest versions, not the originals. That movie franchise stopped being about the cars after Tokyo Drift. Almost every car in these movies is commercial, like Transformers, rather than custom, like in the original FF. The action sequences are ridiculous and over the top, completely unbelievable. If you've seen the last couple of films you know what i mean. I mean FFS, Ludacris and Tyreese ride a Pontiac Fiero into outer space....that says it all. With that said, it's still good, goofy action fun. Car chases are always kick ass no matter what...because cars. The movie, i thought, was a bit more story driven that most FF movies. They did some good flash-back stuff with Dom's dad and filled in those blanks there, which i thought was good and rather unexpected. If you're a FF fan, i can't see a reason why you wouldn't enjoy this. If you're the type who can't shut off their brain and has to criticize every action sequence as non-believable.....well then you should probably skip this. |
Quiet Place 2 was actually really good! Recommend! :thumb:

Luca was really cute. Pixar just does such a great job.

Got a Movie Thread/Series Thread tie-in.
Watched Lincoln as an Independence Day relaxation, was 2/3 through the movie before it struck me who was playing Lincoln's Secy Nicolay. https://assets.mycast.io/actor_image...jpg?1609968282 https://media.vanityfair.com/photos/...emy-Strong.jpg |
I’m not up to speed on my current Hollywood actors category—- who played Secretary Nicolay?

Starting here; https://chiefsplanet.com/BB/showpost...postcount=1187 Kind of a larger than life, meme-able character that's almost bigger than TV, along the lines of Tony Soprano or Walter White [not that he's 'the same' as them, character-wise, . . . just a different high profile archetype], captures the zeitgeist of a certain type of person in a time and place. |
Thanks. Never heard of him.

Caught Synchronic with Anthony Mackie on Netflix. Decent, trippy idea of a movie. If you're bored and looking for something new to watch, check it out (and is there a movie that Mackie HASN'T been in lately??). I actually wanted this movie to be longer to further explore the premise of what was going on. It felt like it could have been much better with another 20-30 minutes to me.
Also saw Tomorrow War on Prime. I loved the premise, and I also loved seeing Yvonne Strahovski (dammit girl), but it just felt like it didn't live up to what it could have/should have been. I'm a Chris Pratt fan, but it felt like he was purely going through the motions for a paycheck in this one. This is a movie that may have been better suited as a series. And just an opinion here - through the age of Covid I'm glad for platforms like Netflix and Prime to have put out the content they have in movies and series to make up for the lack of theater entertainment, but man is there a dropoff in quality between the two. Again I'm grateful to have it, but do I ever miss the blockbuster and true Hollywood product you get in the theater. If Netflix and the rest are going to continue down this path and this really is the future we're looking at, hopefully the quality continues to improve (and I realize that means costs will go up, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there). |

I watched the first two installments of those Fear Street movies on Netflix.
The first was better than the second, IMO, but overall they're decent. Worth a watch. Kind of a strange middle ground between PG-13 and Rated R so think Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark- not true horror. The third and final should be out soon so I will definitely catch that one too. |
Oh, and I also finally caught The Green Book. I liked it well enough. I thought Viggo was great as was Mahershala.

The Tomorrow War was cringe worthy bad. Seriously one of the worst sci fi film/laughably stupid time travel movie I've seen in quite some time.
I was aware that the directors of the Lego movie did this I knew it wasn't going to be gritty. A lot of the humor fell so flat and Pratt was okay (he did all he could and is usually good in most stuff) but damn the surrounding cast??! Holy shit they were bad. 4/10 |
Host
whoa this was actually pretty ****ing good! Found footage type films are usually are very hit or miss (usually lame) but damn this one was very well executed. The jump scares were well placed and effective, the acting was pretty good by some young unknown actresses. Also loved the sense of dread in this little film from start to finish . I highly recommend it! |
Cosmic Sin on Netflix.
Just.......don't. |

So i watched the new Space Jam....
**** the haters, i was entertained. I thought it was a good KIDS movie. My son and my niece (14 & 11) both enjoyed it. The way they wove all of WB's properties into the movie was pretty cool, i thought. Having King Kong, The Night King (GoT), The Gremlins etc as part of the crowd was a "cute" addition. |

Why isn't there a Dune thread?
Also I read Dune in 7th grade and if anyone told me my classmate would one day play Piter... https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E61EUOAW...jpg&name=large |

Critics have been slamming the overuse of WB owned characters in nearly every review but I don't see that as a problem, at all. Who else are they supposed to have in the crowd when they're literally inside of the Warner Brothers server? |
I caught the new Nicolas Cage film called Pig in theaters the other day and thought it was great & very moving/touching.
Living alone in the Oregon wilderness, a truffle hunter returns to Portland to find the person who stole his beloved pig. If you're going into this expecting a John Wick type of revenge action film...you will be in for a world of disappointment haha . It is more of a character study and Cage is excellent in this. Very restrained / subdued performance from Cage ( you could see the pain/suffering in his eyes & voice/mannerisms ) . Just a really good film all around. If you dig Cage films or indie films, check this film out! |

Has anyone given Boss Level on Hulu a go yet? It's a bloody as hell Groundhog Day. I thoroughly enjoyed it, maybe because I was not expecting anything from it. Great shoot 'em up time waster.

Just got done watching Jungle Cruise. We both really liked it. They were clearly going for a Pirates of the Caribbean feel and I think they did a good job at that. If you liked those movies, even just the first one, you will probably like Jungle Cruise. Maybe the most surprising thing was the recurring use of Nothing Else Matters for the music but it’s a great song and seemed to fit in well but I’m not exactly a movie music expert.
|
I watched The Hunt last night. It was a decent enough mindless action/comedy. Plus Betty Gilpin is stacked.
|
My Wife and I went to see The Green Knight (Tomatometer 90%) instead of Jungle Cruise (Tomatometer 63%). We walked out of it about half way thru because it was so boring. From now on we will always go by the audience score. Jungle Cruise Audience Score 93% The Green Knight Audience Score 54%. :banghead:

F9 is by far the worst movie I've ever seen relative to it's budget
|
I watched Gunpowder Milkshake. It's worth the time. It's super stylized in the vein of 300 and Sin City.
The bad: If you don't like stylized stuff it won't work. It's hit or miss for me but this worked. If you don't like girlpower shit don't bother. This is done well enough that I'm fine with it. it didn't take me out of it. There is a lot of "No way a girl can hit a dude hard enough to do that damage" stuff, but it's stylized enough that it's already not taking itself too seriously. The Good: The action sequences, especially when they go hog and choreograph it to music is really well done. Karen Gillan is really good. Disclaimer: I think she's super underrated so that may cloud my perception here but her and Lena Heady especially are really, really good. It does a lot of the same stuff movies like Sucker Punch do, but for whatever reason worked for me in this one. It sets out to do something, it isn't just CGI action porn. It's long, but I wanted more when it was over. It's worth the time IMO. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/yxuAroBqt2c" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe> |
Looks like they could have called it Joan Wick. :D
|
Quote:
It doesn't take itself as serious as Wick does. And the action is far more unrealistic, although, I can say in no uncertain terms that I do not want Michelle Yeoh beating my ****ing ass with a log chain. ROFL Maybe more along the lines of Joan Wick goes Frank Miller? IDK Joan Wick is funnier. We'll go with that. |

I watched the new Suicide Squad this weekend. I thought it was fun. I didn't bother over analyzing it much, didn't put much thought into it. The shark made me laugh.
|
Catch-up time. Movies from this year that I've seen:
Loved It: The Dig (with Ralph Fiennes) and The Suicide Squad, two very different movies Good: Black Widow and Thunder Force Meh: Without Remorse. Awful: Wonder Woman 1984. That's all the new releases I've seen. I'm most looking forward to Only Murders in the Building (Steve Martin/Martin Short), Ghostbusters Afterlife, The War Below (WWI sapper war drama), and Pig with Nicolas Cage. |
No idea what it's all going to be about, but it looks joyous and gorgeous

Don't Breathe 2 not as good as the first one but it was still really entertaining and featured a lot of great kills mixed in with some twists & turns that I didn't see coming. Stephen Lang is such an underrated American actor and looks great for being nearly 70 years old.
