Watched Nightcrawler (2014) the other night.

Gyllenhal was amazing. Gained a new 'spect for him as an actor. Wasn't satisfied with the ending, though with 30mins or so left in the movie, i already had a strong impression that the ending wasn't going to give the gratification i was hoping for.

Well written, great story. Superbly acted. Ending was rather abrupt.

Gyllenhal was great in that one.

Totally different type of movie, but I thought he was really good in Prisoners with Hugh Jackman as well.

Agreed. Cage is wildly entertaining in my book and always brings it strong no matter how shitty the script/direction is.

For those that haven't seen the Cage film called Mandy (it came out a few years ago) I HIGHLY recommend checking it out. I watched it high as hell and was taken back by it. An intense nightmarish acid trip into hell. Cage was ****ing awesome in it.

Thanks for the reminder. I recall being excited for this one, and it slipped through the cracks.

What a ****ing trip. I'm half sad that every movie isn't this good, and half scared to death that there are minds out there that can even imagine making something like this.

Overall, I'm glad I waited and stayed away from buzz. It was an experience to watch with no preconceptions. I hate to think if I watched it after reading a bunch of reviews and recaps.

One thing I'll have to say without spoiling anything [because it's a performance point, not a plotpoint], but Jake's blinking will haunt me for the rest of my days. A weird takeaway from such a film, all things considered, but it was searing.

12 Monkeys for the first time last night. Mind bending.

I then watched it again because something wasn't lining up for me to close the full circle. It was the message Railly left on the number Cole was given. Must have been taking a bong hit at that time.

Has anyone watched Batman The Long Halloween part 1 yet?

Mennonite 06-29-2021 10:47 AM

Halloween (2018)

This is a very tired franchise.

What they should have done:

1) Set the movie in the early 80s. Halloween night isn't the same in 2018 as it was in 1982.

2) Ditch all the Laurie Strode stuff. Enough already.

3) Focus on atmosphere, suspense, and creative kills. There were 50 million slasher flicks in the 80s but only a handful were memorable. The ones that were (usually) emphasized those three things.

Edit: I did like the face/flashlight gag.

12 Monkeys is one of my favorite films of the 90s (and this is coming from someone that usually can't stand time travel elements in films. For example, I thought the time travel crap in Avengers: Endgame was stupid af & took up too much of the film's runtime)

Anyways getting back to the masterfully done 12 Monkeys, its . definitely "mind bending" for sure & so well done all around. The director (Terry Gilliam) wasn't messing around here.

Mennonite 06-29-2021 07:29 PM

If you like 12 Monkeys you might be interested in La Jetée (1962).

Los cronocrímenes (2007) is also a very good mind twisting time travel story.

Watched "The Devil Below" on Netflix.

****ing GARBAGE. Super low budget, bad acting, plot holes, makes no goddamn sense. The little bit of CGI they had looked like claymation....don't waste your time. Doesn't even serve as a decent B movie.

If you see the trailer and think, "hey, monster movie, i'll give it a go", nope. It doesn't even serve as a halfway decent monster movie. It failed on every level.

I also saw the new Fast and Furious Movie.

Well....it's a Fast and Furious movie...more akin to the latest versions, not the originals.

That movie franchise stopped being about the cars after Tokyo Drift. Almost every car in these movies is commercial, like Transformers, rather than custom, like in the original FF.

The action sequences are ridiculous and over the top, completely unbelievable. If you've seen the last couple of films you know what i mean. I mean FFS, Ludacris and Tyreese ride a Pontiac Fiero into outer space....that says it all.

With that said, it's still good, goofy action fun. Car chases are always kick ass no matter what...because cars.

The movie, i thought, was a bit more story driven that most FF movies. They did some good flash-back stuff with Dom's dad and filled in those blanks there, which i thought was good and rather unexpected.

If you're a FF fan, i can't see a reason why you wouldn't enjoy this.

If you're the type who can't shut off their brain and has to criticize every action sequence as non-believable.....well then you should probably skip this.

He plays Kenneth, a central character in Succession, which is being discussed a little bit in the Must See Series thread currently.

Starting here;

https://chiefsplanet.com/BB/showpost...postcount=1187

Kind of a larger than life, meme-able character that's almost bigger than TV, along the lines of Tony Soprano or Walter White [not that he's 'the same' as them, character-wise, . . . just a different high profile archetype], captures the zeitgeist of a certain type of person in a time and place.

I think part of Pixar's recent dip has a ton to do with its lack of memorable music. These last few films are lacking the talents of someone like Michael Giacchino, who has been terrific is basically every film he was involved with for Pixar.

Bowser 07-06-2021 08:58 AM

Caught Synchronic with Anthony Mackie on Netflix. Decent, trippy idea of a movie. If you're bored and looking for something new to watch, check it out (and is there a movie that Mackie HASN'T been in lately??). I actually wanted this movie to be longer to further explore the premise of what was going on. It felt like it could have been much better with another 20-30 minutes to me.

Also saw Tomorrow War on Prime. I loved the premise, and I also loved seeing Yvonne Strahovski (dammit girl), but it just felt like it didn't live up to what it could have/should have been. I'm a Chris Pratt fan, but it felt like he was purely going through the motions for a paycheck in this one. This is a movie that may have been better suited as a series.

And just an opinion here - through the age of Covid I'm glad for platforms like Netflix and Prime to have put out the content they have in movies and series to make up for the lack of theater entertainment, but man is there a dropoff in quality between the two. Again I'm grateful to have it, but do I ever miss the blockbuster and true Hollywood product you get in the theater. If Netflix and the rest are going to continue down this path and this really is the future we're looking at, hopefully the quality continues to improve (and I realize that means costs will go up, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there).

Funny you mention that because the whole time I was watching Luca I was getting Final Fantasy VII vibes from the music. Personally, I love it as it gives me a nostalgic feeling, but it is certainly not memorable for the masses.

I watched the first two installments of those Fear Street movies on Netflix.

The first was better than the second, IMO, but overall they're decent. Worth a watch. Kind of a strange middle ground between PG-13 and Rated R so think Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark- not true horror.

The third and final should be out soon so I will definitely catch that one too.

The Tomorrow War was cringe worthy bad. Seriously one of the worst sci fi film/laughably stupid time travel movie I've seen in quite some time.
I was aware that the directors of the Lego movie did this I knew it wasn't going to be gritty. A lot of the humor fell so flat and Pratt was okay (he did all he could and is usually good in most stuff) but damn the surrounding cast??! Holy shit they were bad.

4/10

whoa this was actually pretty ****ing good! Found footage type films are usually are very hit or miss (usually lame) but damn this one was very well executed. My 8 year old loved it, too. I thought LeBron's acting was rather stiff (he was much better in Trainwreck, IMO) but otherwise, it was a fun kid's movie, as you said.

Critics have been slamming the overuse of WB owned characters in nearly every review but I don't see that as a problem, at all.

Who else are they supposed to have in the crowd when they're literally inside of the Warner Brothers server?

sully1983 07-21-2021 03:42 PM

I caught the new Nicolas Cage film called Pig in theaters the other day and thought it was great & very moving/touching.
Living alone in the Oregon wilderness, a truffle hunter returns to Portland to find the person who stole his beloved pig.

If you're going into this expecting a John Wick type of revenge action film...you will be in for a world of disappointment haha . It is more of a character study and Cage is excellent in this. Very restrained / subdued performance from Cage ( you could see the pain/suffering in his eyes & voice/mannerisms ) . Just a really good film all around. If you dig Cage films or indie films, check this film out!

Just got done watching Jungle Cruise. We both really liked it. They were clearly going for a Pirates of the Caribbean feel and I think they did a good job at that. If you liked those movies, even just the first one, you will probably like Jungle Cruise. Maybe the most surprising thing was the recurring use of Nothing Else Matters for the music but it’s a great song and seemed to fit in well but I’m not exactly a movie music expert.

RT is fairly useless now. Critic scores are skewed because they judge everything based on wokeness and politics, and audience scores are skewed because, well, most people are morons.

I saw a post on Facebook a couple of days ago that kind of sums this up - "Think about how dumb the average person is, and then realize that half the people are dumber than that." :shake:

F9 is by far the worst movie I've ever seen relative to it's budget

Buehler445 08-22-2021 10:46 PM

I watched Gunpowder Milkshake. It's worth the time. It's super stylized in the vein of 300 and Sin City.

The bad: If you don't like stylized stuff it won't work. It's hit or miss for me but this worked.

If you don't like girlpower shit don't bother. This is done well enough that I'm fine with it. it didn't take me out of it. There is a lot of "No way a girl can hit a dude hard enough to do that damage" stuff, but it's stylized enough that it's already not taking itself too seriously.

The Good: The action sequences, especially when they go hog and choreograph it to music is really well done.

Karen Gillan is really good. Disclaimer: I think she's super underrated so that may cloud my perception here but her and Lena Heady especially are really, really good.

It does a lot of the same stuff movies like Sucker Punch do, but for whatever reason worked for me in this one.

It sets out to do something, it isn't just CGI action porn.

It's long, but I wanted more when it was over.

It's worth the time IMO.

Meh: Without Remorse.
Awful: Wonder Woman 1984.

That's all the new releases I've seen. I'm most looking forward to Only Murders in the Building (Steve Martin/Martin Short), Ghostbusters Afterlife, The War Below (WWI sapper war drama), and Pig with Nicolas Cage.

No idea what it's all going to be about, but it looks joyous and gorgeous

I was aware that the directors of the Lego movie did this I knew it wasn't going to be gritty. A lot of the humor fell so flat and Pratt was okay (he did all he could and is usually good in most stuff) but damn the surrounding cast??! Holy shit they were bad.

4/10

Forgot about this one, saw it too. It was ok - hang your brain on the shelf before viewing. The opening scene was worth the watch and the fail of the transport cool too! But, the continuous gun fire with 0 results was like what?

The first was better than the second, IMO, but overall they're decent. Worth a watch. Kind of a strange middle ground between PG-13 and Rated R so think Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark- not true horror.

The third and final should be out soon so I will definitely catch that one too.

These are on my list as well

I actually just watched Don’t Breathe 2. It was entertaining.

Nice! I dug the hell out of the 1st one. Stephen Lang is such an awesome & underrated actor. I'll get around to seeing the sequel eventually but I wish I didn't see the the trailer for it because it spoiled so many kills. I really hate it when trailers do that.

Then you’ve obviously never seen DP Delivery. I suggest you check it out before commenting such things, noob.

Eh imo the 3rd act was a complete letdown and it loses its steam after
Spoiler!

But what do I know? I'm just some anonymous jackass on an internet message board while Tarantino is a multi Oscar winner and his films make tons of money at the box office so he must be doing something right.

Don't Breathe 2 not as good as the first one but it was still really entertaining and featured a lot of great kills mixed in with some twists & turns that I didn't see coming. Stephen Lang is such an underrated American actor and looks great for being nearly 70 years old.
