That Whine Tunnel sounds interesting. I don't know that I'd enjoy it, but I'd surely try it just because it sounds unique.

That traditz sounds right up my alley, though. I know I'm in the minority, but I prefer a great barrel-aged barleywine over a great barrel-aged stout any day of the week.

TimBone 05-22-2017 08:58 PM

Kind of a long shot here, I suppose. Anybody love close to the Tired Hands brewery in Ardmore? I'm hoping to trade for some of their stuff either through here or reddit. I'm going down to Lafayette tomorrow for the release of Mosaic DDH Envie from Parish. I'm wanting to trade some of it for some Tired Hands.

I guess I'm hoping Reaper still checks in on this thread.

If Reaper or anyone else is interested, I also have a bottle of Old Mad Joy Baltic Porter from Great Raft as well that's up for trade. Let me know.

KCUnited 05-23-2017 06:01 AM

I have to say that 3 Floyds has been killing craft beer week up here with their collaboration releases. They released one with Pipeworks this week called Unicorn vs Zombie. Huge DIPA as expected.

Probably my favorite though is the hazy IPA they did with Forbidden Root called Stay Lit. It's Amarillo and Mosaic, but they added lactose and both cherry and yellow birch wood in the process. Super complex for the style, but it's really damn good. I've heard they might bottle the next batch. Here's the promo for it.

Nah, that has to be one of the most sought after beers from the Midwest outside of Toppling Goliath stouts, at least around here. I don't love BA stouts, or Diabeetus Dark Lord, enough to accumulate enough ammo to try and acquire it. I probably would've loved Dark Lord Day when I was younger, now it sounds like too big of a shit show for a get off my lawn guy like me. Nothing triggers a Chicago beer nerd like a barrel aged stout with vanilla.

Yeah, Dark Lord day seems like a huge ordeal. There's some beer guys I know from Texas that make the trip up there every year.

I'm almost glad that I'm not huge into stouts, or else I might be tempted to do the same.

I just saw people on Reddit were going crazy over the handjee. Figured I'd ask if it was something you were into.

Would love to help you out, but I have no Tired Hands. I'm curious how that DDH Envie will be. Wish Parish would get their distribution expanded. Of course, they're likely never going to release those beers widely.

phisherman 05-23-2017 09:20 AM

Handjee is just normal Dork Lard diabetes beer in a barrel with vanilla added. Yes, I know I misspelled the name of the beer and yes, I meant to.

Sorry, Dark Lord and its variants are just nasty. People freak over them but I've never been all that impressed. Too much residual sugar in the base beer and the variants push it way past the point of drinkability.

I had the galaxy and citra batches. Both were good, but I definitely preferred the galaxy. I've been on a mosaic kick lately, so I'm looking forward to trying this one. You wanna trade for some Lost 40 hops?

I've been to a couple DLDs, and they're definitely a shitshow. Haven't been in quite a few years, and I've heard it's better run now, but when I went in 2010/2012, it wasn't all that enjoyable. Killer guest taps, but the lines were insane to get any beer. And yes, DL is way overrated - way too sweet.

Darkness Day in Minneapolis is a better event, IMHO. It's quite a bit smaller, and is basically an overnight bottle share with tents/bonfires, and ~1000 people. Some of my favorite beer memories are from that event, which isn't really even the event, it's just the lead-up. Darkness is also too sweet, but the BA variants are damn good.

Outside of a couple hyped variants, I think it's conceded, even by regulars at DLD that Dark Lord is too sweet and their motivation for the event is the massive bottle share (I'd be in it for the metal bands). They pushed it to May this year, so it got better weather and they made the variants totally random this year as opposed to the group you got assigned. That seemed to make most people happier with it.

I actually prefer regular Darkness over the BA version, just due to it's hoppiness which seems to fade as it sits in barrels. I got to try it on cask this year and it blew me away. Really love that beer.

I've got 6 2015s downstairs still, but no more 14s. I feel like 14 was a better year. Also, I knew they switched to 12 ouncers, but they changed the distribution schedule too?

They just started making 4 packs and putting it on their year-round calendar in the past year, I believe... used to be released in October/November and was one of the more difficult to find around KC.

Speaking of bourbon, I still have two cases of Bourbon County Stout. :D

Yeah. It's seasonal. It may be more regular down in LR but we only get it on occasion up here. They've been doing a bunch of barrel aged shit lately which goes for like $25 a four pack. Hopefully get some more Snake Party soon.

Which year? 2015 or 2016?

Careful with those 2015s, a bunch of them are lacto and brett infected and will go sour over time. I got lucky with all of my 2015s and didn't have any that were bad, but I had a lot of friends that were not so lucky.

I've still got a few bottles left of 15 BCS, but I didn't think last year was as good, so it's been a harder drink.

I've still got a 14 Abyss too to drink sometime.

Yep, already made the 8 hour round trip back to Indy. Getting a pour of derivation #6 was a nice surprise. I didn't realize the hype would cause it to be sold out by 2 pm on a random Wednesday, but I'm glad I got there extremely early.

phisherman 05-24-2017 02:28 PM

2016... I probably only bought a bottle or maybe two of 2015, I got tired of searching for them on Black Friday in KC, one bottle at a time. I didn't pick up any 2016 in KC, but moved here at the end of December and they still had 5 cases laying around.

I think 2016 is fantastic, because it already tastes like it's sat in my basement for 6-8 months. I thought previous years were almost a little too boozy when opened right away, but they would smooth out as long as I could ignore them until summer of the next fall.

You're right. They do. They might be the most underrated brewery in Houston. Maybe I'm not as in touch with the Houston beer scene as much as I think I am, but I never hear any one mentioning them when talking about top breweries in Houston.

My new nearest HEB carries a bunch of Buffalo Bayou and Clown Shoes beers and that makes me happy. Now if I only could get them to order Aventinus and all would be good.

I could have spent the entire day drinking it, that thing was a marathon... when I first started drinking stouts, I thought some of them were a meal in a bottle, and that one definitely fits that description.

I saw the cans, too, and will have to try the coffee stout... as long as it's not $20.

Anyone here try anything from Free State Brewing Co. in Lawrence? My buddy who moved away to Denver this morning got me a growler of their Garden Party lager as a gift. Looking forward to drinking some for the Royals game tonight.

I am sure it's been talked about already, but recently I have been drinking a lot of Boulevard's Tank 7, it was an immediate favorite from the start. If you aren't from KC and/or haven't tried that yet I would get on that whenever possible.

Their Copperhead Pale Ale is very good. Normally my go-to. They have one that's called Cloud Jumper that is really good too. It's a heavier hoppy ale. The beer cheese soup is awesome, be sure and try that....

This last batch they released this week? Nah, I believe they said it was a small batch. Last batch I had was the Citra batch from July. I had some this month and it was still drinking well.

If you're still looking for some, I'll grab you some the next time I see some semi-fresh stuff. I usually am able to only get it at the brewery, though. Rarely do I see it this far south.

Another one that doesn't make it to AZ? You check at Park Plaza?

I was there last week and didn't see it. Didn't know they distributed outside of Missouri though (I've never even seen it on the KS side)... looks like they're up to 5 states, but that's not always up to date.

KCUnited 09-09-2017 02:28 PM

Pretty sure I saw them still on the shelf from last year.

Bearcat 09-09-2017 02:29 PM

That's really "the one" when it comes to MO/KS distribution for me. Schlafly has a good bourbon stout, but I still have a case of BCS from last year. Probably a few more that I definitely wouldn't turn down, but Pumpkin Smash though....

I was in KC a month too early... I did pick up some Rock Bridge Option #2 and a few others, but was too early for most of the Fall stuff.

Let me know if there's something I can get for you in STL, and we can trade...maybe for some of that BCS?

BUY ALL THE PUMPKIN SMASH

Seriously though, I'd be willing to part with ~5 BCSs for a couple 4 packs of Pumpkin Smash (the BCSs are 16.9oz each, if you let me know how much the 4 packs cost, I can see how much I paid for the BCS).

So, any of you KC guys want to work a trade? I'm interested in Torn Label's Fog Machine. I can trade some fresh Ghost in the Machine.

TimBone 09-15-2017 03:44 PM

I'd also like to grab something from BKS artisan ales they start releasing beers. Anybody interested just PM me.

TimBone 09-15-2017 08:11 PM

Bump to see if anyone is interested. Trades for the Ghost I have are going quick on reddit, and if really like to make something happen for Fog Machine before I run out.

phisherman 09-15-2017 09:33 PM

I'll grab you some Fog Machine. I should be at the release. PM me. The Torn Label guys are the best.

phisherman 09-15-2017 09:37 PM

I'm not sure how much volume BKS Artisan will be moving right away, but I'd be happy to throw you some of those too when they start having releases. He just got all of the permits straightened out early this week, so beer is brewing now at the least!

Having my first Arrogant Bastard Ale. Very complex, pretty strong. I can dig it.

Your boy finally won something in his life. Prop got the bananas foster treatment this year, which doesn't tickle the taint for me really, but I'm sure it will be steller. I'm more excited about the Bourbon County Reserve and what the street market may have for sale.

You remember when KCUnited was just one of us? I know I do.

(Congrats. That looks like a good time.)
