Story below.

Clark Hunt reportedly prepared to name Andy Reid as Chiefs head coach

PHILADELPHIA (KCTV) -

Chiefs owner Clark Hunt is reportedly close to wrapping up a deal to name Andy Reid as Kansas City's head coach.

Reid, who was fired earlier this week as the Philadelphia Eagles' long-time head coach, met with Hunt and other Chiefs officials for nine hours on Wednesday.

ESPN is reporting that league officials say Reid and Hunt have reached an agreement on the major points and only "minor details" remain to be worked out.

"This is going to happen fast," ESPN reported a source close to Reid as saying.

Reid had planned to meet with the Arizona Cardinals ownership later this week about their opening.

Chiefs general manager Scott Pioli was apparently with Hunt and others as they met for more than nine hours on Wednesday.

Mortensen said Pioli was with Hunt when he met with two Atlanta Falcons coaches about replacing Romeo Crennel.

One of those coaches, Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter, signed a contract extension with the Falcons during the overnight hours. The Falcons announced Wednesday morning Koetter would be staying after signing the one-year extension.

Hunt and Pioli also interviewed Falcons special teams coach Keith Armstrong on New Year's Day.

Snagging Reid would be a big get for Hunt. Reid has a history of cultivating NFL quarterbacks, starting with Donovan McNabb. He was the league's most tenured coach before he was ousted following Sunday's game.

Some media outlets reported Reid is a done deal in Arizona, but Hunt swooped in to interview Reid before the former Eagles coach travels west.

What qualities is Hunt looking for in the next head coach? Click here for more details, including KCTV5 sports anchor Michael Coleman's exclusive interview with Hunt.

Who do you want as the next Chiefs coach? Would Reid be a good hire? Share your thoughts on KCTV's Facebook page. Click here.

Going through the current roster, discussing Philly's roster/drafts and what role Reid had in those decisions, philosophy talks. You figure some teams may fly in the night before, have an informal dinner then meet the following day for discussions. KC packed all that into 9 hours. Seems like a proper amount of time.

I'm not altogether for the hire, but I don't hate it. What I've always assumed is that he brought in too many new players, poisoning the well so to speak. It's hard to changed a veteran free agents frame of mind to match that of the culture you've instilled in your franchise. He simply may have brought in too many free agents too quickly, and it was a cancer that caused him to lose the locker room.

Says a lot to me that Vick, while defending Reid after his firing, blamed the guys in the locker room for Andy losing his job...

My initial reaction to Andy Reid getting fired from Philly was the man needs to step back at least one year and rejuvenate. I kind of thought with the issues involving his son and the seasons he's coached he might just be a little burned out. But what do I know what drives another man. Hopefully he will be ok.

Something that struck me as a little more troubling was this

Quote:

The Chiefs' contingent of officials included owner Clark Hunt, general manager Scott Pioli, executive Ryan Petkoff and president Mark Donovan, who used to work in Philadelphia with Reid.
I just kind of assumed his Pioli's fat ass would be sitting around moping in KC after getting "nuetered".

I've watched the Eagles the last few years. Their offense was pretty awesome for the most part. Vick was good enough but their line was ****ing AWFUL and their receivers fumbled and dropped perfect passes all the frickin time. McCoy was great. Their defense was pretty awful as well. Who hires an o-line coach to be DC? Other than that I'm just glad we won't have complete reeruns running our offense anymore. That's a thing of the past.

That’s what I thought initially too….but the more I think about it, the more I really like the hire. Hes proven he can rebuild from the bottom up. Philly was horrible in 1998 before he arrived. Hes proven he can win playoff games. Hes proven he knows the QB position. Hes still hungry because he hasn’t won it all. I like this hire a lot. Plus, lets be honest….going to KC will be like a rejuvenation from Philly.

Here's a news flash for you: Bill Belichick and Sean Payton aren't available. The only way a winning coach becomes available is if he has a couple of down years and it's time to move on.

John Fox's last two seasons at Carolina were 8-8 and 2-14. He didn't take a year off. He went to Denver, and his first two seasons there were 8-8 and 13-3. I'd take that.

Tom Coughlin had three losing seasons in a row before he left Jacksonville. Then he went to the Giants and won two Super Bowls. I'd take that too.

There is no perfect hire out there. Andy Reid is a damn good one, though.
