Synaptic vs Adept, the config tools are different as well. There are some minor differences.

Trick one on Kubuntu is to use Adept to install Synaptic. Adept is a POS IMO. From there it helps to install Automatix (google it) for multimedia stuff. Make sure you enable multiverse and universe and all the other package repositories that it comes with. The Kubuntu wiki is priceless. Right out of the box it will have Konversation installed and it will take you straight into the Kubuntu IRC which is also very good.
